- Private Edward Byrne joined the 19th Royal Hussars, a cavalry regiment, before the war and served until 1919. He fought at two of the five Battles of Ypres and the Battle of the Somme, and was nearly killed in a cavalry charge near the end of the conflict.

the only other with first hand knowledge of the Byrne family was the Earl of Meath
whose family employed the Byrne.
Gay never mentioned my grandfather, Patrick, the eldest son who lied about his age
and joined up at 14. He served in the army for 26 years, 219 days. In all the battles mentioned and many years in India. I have his discharge papers showing his excellent
service attaining the Rank of Sergeant. Major.
I also have a letter from the King thanking his parents for having 5 sons in the army.
Nice if the researchers had included my not so famous Grandad in the programme.
