Nice review. It wont play elden ring max settings but it will play it pretty well. Im about 60 hours in on elden ring and i have been really happy with the performance. 1080 with a mix of settings and i get around 35 to 40 fps which on a small screen looks very good and is totally playable. I also played re4 and street fighter 6 on it and they both played very good. I have read that Hogwarts legacy is very poorly optimized for pc so maybe not the best game to try on this. Overall im very happy with it but i grew up in the 90s so i really dont care about getting 100 plus fps. I would get some minor stuttering on re4 but nothing that didn't make it unplayable. For a handheld its pretty impressive.
You can literally play everything on this device but logically speaking it doesn't make sense to buy one just to play games on max settings, if you're traveling or chilling somewhere you can literally turn this thing on and play whatever you want to play with amazing performance. That 120hz display is more than enough. I've ordered mine and hopefully I'll give it a shot myself since I'll be moving quite alot 😁
I'm glad you mentioned how absurd marketing affects reputation of ROG Ally there. Steam Deck also got an advantage of being seen as a 'console' that runs PC games, plus cheaper price tag. It already sets a low bar for users of what it could be done on the device. Frankly, not many people actually move it to Windows and play mainstream games on it (there's no point to do it unless you use it as a 'real' pc). While #PlayAllYourGames pretty much rises up user's expectations much more than it should be. Not to mention, a quite rough debut (some hardware issues, firmware issues) really harms its reputation despite in all fairness it does so many things better than Steam Deck.
Playing msfs 2020 no issues on low settings also play battlefield one medium settings and still looks great. With a little tech know how this is a great performer for the price point. Be realistic it's a $700 hand held gaming PC and for what it is it plays great 👍👍 . If you think this is going to do what you're rtx 4090 can do then you should seek help.😅
So I just purchased this device. Do you think that this was worth getting instead of the steam deck? I wasn't sure what to get but I want to play all games. I wanted to play everything and I know on the steam deck it's hard to play in games like modern warfare and such without spending hours. Only you can decide if it's worth the purchase for yourself. If you own many games and load them yourself this is perfect for you. If you know how to run windows and can problem-solve then you wil love it. If you just want to pick sonthing up initially and play a game without worry this is not for you. It is not a full console it is a pc in the hand. It has its downsides and good sides.
300$ more then a Deck for a 5-18% boost in performance....aka playing on high and ultra on a 7-8 inch screen....and a 120 hz 1080p panel that never hits 120 unless your stuck to a wall or to downgrade resolution to 720p.... refused to fix faulty SD card reader properly...to many red flags and Asus's QC has shown it the past 5 years ontop of people still posting getting not properly functioning units. Thats a no for me dawg theres alot i can do with that 300 instead of sipping the copium. but i mean if your cool and accept these flaws more power to you and modifying it into a actual fully functioning device. tired of companies selling 80% of a product and exspect for the consumer to make it 100% Starfield is a prime example of serving half baked products
You’re incorrect no one bought this device thinking they could play AAA games at max settings 120hz. People bought it to play AAA games at acceptable settings on the go. I myself haven’t ran into a single game that I couldn’t play on the ROG Ally. And I’ve also been having an amazing experience playing emulation on it as well.
I love mine it does great ONLY ISSUE is the SD card reader works now and then and read write speeds are horrible so im not sure if i got a defective unit or its the heat getting to it. But i dont really care about the SD card i dont think its a huge deal cause i never believed in storing games on a micro SD anyways.
The problem you're experiencing with Hogwarts legacy is you need to change the GPU to 6GB/7GB/8GB. I am assuming you're using 4 which cannot run modern games.

It's not just good, it's way too good. You can play on different settings but that depends on what suits you best, i believe you'd be satisfied with every setting that's in between medium to high in most likely any game, just don't expect a pc gaming performance without a little bit of stuttering 😅
Voice is also a good way of controlling and inputting in Windows. As far as the latest games go, they can play well but the details have to be lowered. As you say, you don't need max settings to look good.
In my personal opinion Asus needs to improve the low wattage performance the most. It is disappointing how much performance you lose in quiet mode. It should be more similar to how the Steam Deck scales performance and not have the massive drop off in performance below 12w. I think this is perfect at 12w-18w on battery. Although I would disagree this is faster than an equivalently priced gaming laptop. For $700 you could get a RTX 2050 or RTX 3050, both of which are quite a bit faster than the ROG Ally. At $1000 or more you could easily find a RTX 3060 or better around that price which is such a massive boost over the ROG Ally. The ROG Ally is slightly slower than a GTX 1650 meaning it can do some decent gaming. Hogwarts legacy can run on both this and the Steam Deck, however the biggest issue lies in the game not compiling shaders. If the VRAM is set to auto the game will compile shaders and eliminate the stutter and make the experience pretty decent. The CPU is great in the ROG ally and yeah that is equivalent to many gaming laptops. Can't wait until I can get my hands on one though

Seems like maybe there is a misconception here. It will play the games but probably on "Low" settings, maybe "Medium". You may need to clock some down to 720p. But it'll play. Going for "Max" settings especially on new AAA games is not the point. You wouldn't achieve that on a $700 laptop so not sure why you think you could on a $700 handheld.
I’ve been playing baulders gate 3 with a mix of all settings (mostly high settings, but clouds, shadows on low). I’m getting consistent 40-50 fps at 1080p. Love it.
What I see is a PC gaming reset. Desktops have reached their peek, so we step back 10 years and start over with handhelds. They will get more powerful every year until they too peek.
You are so off about the marketing. The marketing is a shot at the Steamdeck because you cant play games that have anti cheat. That's the whole reason it runs windows. The bad reviews are because it has a high learning curve if you don't know windows.
i believe it's not just games with anti-cheat that won't (often) work on the steam deck, but also all 32 bit games & apps, including many older games, which there are still quite a few on just steam alone.
I have a gaming pc and xbox but i have not finish a game. With Ally i finished 4 games in 2 weeks.😂😂

Rog ally works well for me ive already loaded many games on it and love it. Had it for 3 days now. Everything works fine for me

The Rog Ally completely replaced my desktop rig solely because i installed a gen4 4tb nvme 2280 ssd.

Yep it's not going to give you that ultra performance, but it'll open up plenty of opportunities to game.
Call of duty runs pretty well for me, idk about warzone but playing multiplayer I always get around 100+ frames
Warzone 2 works smoothly for me with 55-60 fps

Yea I turn my settings down but I can play MW2 at over 100 fps and barely 60c

Nice video, but would recommend a background noise filter/remover. Not super noticeable, though would help a bit with overall quality of the video.
