One of the challenges to RV life is managing a your black and gray water tanks. This can be more of a issue when you are camping in a state or federal park for a longer period than what your waste tanks can support you. And then there are those times when you return home and you have gallons of waste in your tanks and no opportunity to dump before returning home.
    There's a great solution. In this video we show how simple it is to use a RV portable waste tank, how to connect and how to dump. And to make it a little more interesting, what to do if you return home and you need to empty your tanks.

    I’d put a different axle on each end of that tank and put pneumatic tires on it. It would be so much easier to pull around by hand or pull behind the pickup.

    HI Gary, Great job! I am a full time camper and want to boondock so bad, but all the things you have to know and get to go thru' with it is preventing me. Knowing how to use my llittle blue tank now is one less thing to have to worry about. AND everyone knows you use gloves typically, who wouldnt? All the know it alls in the comment section have to shout from the rooftops what a bad example you are. Shessh, Id like to see them do all the setup with the cameras and such and remember every little thing. Keep up the great vids!!!

      Thanks a bunch Jill. I made a boo boo here not wearing gloves. Had a bunch of camera angle changes and didn’t want to go thru a couple dozen gloves so I washed my hands between shots. Lesson learned. I use gloves and should have shown in the video. On the positive side, don’t fear going out and enjoying your camper. Simple steps here and there and you’ll have a blast. As with anything, there are a few things to consider when using the camper and basic black tank step of using a little enzyme and a marine/RV TP and you’ll be ok. As with most of us, you learn along the way. Just enjoy the adventure and don’t worry about the small stuff. Thanks a bunch for watching our channel and safe travels.

    The most important part that everybody glosses over is how to manipulate the hose. The only thing provided by Thetford was a Chinese drawing in the instruction pamphlet.
    What gets lost is the extreme mess made if you don't get the hose thing right. You demonstrated, but for a newbie, they might not get the importance of the inverted "trap" and end up wishin they had gloves on.
    I just bought one from a place not known for their discounts, Camping World - 35 gal for $230, easily $100 cheaper than Amazon on that day. It may be that hose design - makes the Barker look alot more safe. Then there's that thing about wheels falling off...

    • @iLoveRVlife
      @iLoveRVlife  2 роки тому +1

      It’s been a good unit. I did replace the wheels after a good bit of use. The new units shipped and these replacements make a much better pull to the dump. Part should have stressed was all of these things are plastic. Don’t be in a hurry and watch the bumps along the way.

    • @NickSharpe

      I'm using a dead blow hammer to tap the wheel caps back on the axle. Coming loose after a couple hundred yards. We'll see 😁

    I prefer the Camco Rhino Heavy Duty 36 Gallon Portable. Larger wheels and it has a valve you can open when you are ready to dump. That hose on the SmartTote2 is a weak point while transporting if the cover comes off (as I've read has happened to some people in the reviews of the product). The LAST thing I want to be dealing with is a sewage spill if I can help it. (Oh god, just the idea of that happening grosses me out. LOL) I've used the old blue boys back in the nineties and the complaint I always had about those was the size of the wheels. When I saw the wheel size on the Camco I was sold; well, that and the quality of the build.

    • @iLoveRVlife
      @iLoveRVlife  5 років тому

      That’s a new unit. Haven’t had the chance to try one. We’ve used our SmartTotew for a couple years. As with any black hose, I check before I used to make sure there’s no issues.

    Is there a way to hook this up to those portable camp toilets?
    My thought process is I’d need a tube fitted to connect from the portable toilets hole dump section (people usually tip it and pour it I do not want to do that at all!!) and a tube fitted to connect to the sewage dump site and use a macerator pump. Any thoughts?

    • @iLoveRVlife

    Do you think and intermediate gate valve could be added between the dump elbow and the hose so there's a control gate? Seems as though there could be trouble in some cases making that one shot to the pipe? I wondered how that was going to work with the hose at the bottom.

    • @iLoveRVlife
      @iLoveRVlife  4 роки тому

      Hi Paul. Easy to regulate with the RV dump gates. No issue with the hose at the bottom. It has a cap to seal and is stored above the water line. I put a loop in the hose over the top of the tank, put the end in the drain, and let gravity do the rest. Camco makes a unit with a side dump gate called the Rhino. amzn.to/2Wixc9X Nice units, but a little pricey.

    it shows you how to hook up to your rv. the question i have is the hose connection is on the bottom and its great for dumping BUT, to drain it from the rv to the tote with it on the bottom how does the tote fill up. draining it will not fill it to the top. i'm so confused.

    • @iLoveRVlife
      @iLoveRVlife  6 років тому

      Hi Dave. The other end of the hose is permanently connected to the tote. Gravity does the rest. With the tote lower than the black tank, the tote easily fills. Jerry...

    No gloves? Your everyday garden hose stuck inside the blue boy? And what about a backflow preventer on that hose just in case, so you don't contaminate your city water in the house? I found the video informative but lacking in safe sanitation procedures.

    • @iLoveRVlife
      @iLoveRVlife  4 роки тому

      I get this comment often. Should have to set a good example, but was washing hands between shots. Hard to believe, but this was a 4 hour task with camera placement. No back pressure on the hose. Just a simple rinse.

    • @iLoveRVlife
      @iLoveRVlife  4 роки тому

      Hi Donna. We use for both gray and black. After a black dump, we give it a thorough rinse. That way if used for gray in a gray only dump we don’t add any organic matter.

      If the dump location is close and flat, you can pull by hand. We were in a hilly area and the dump was quite a distance. Attaching to a bumper is really needed for these instances. Most bumpers have a hole for a ball if you don't have a ball hitch. You can pick one up for a few bucks.

      @I Love RV Life True but some people are level to the ground all the way to the dump station so pulling 400 pound or rolling 400 pounds could be nothing to a whole lot of people and I have seen people hook a portable Waste station or portable waste tank to the truck and take it to the dump. A 50 gallon tank just add another option to pick off the shelf. And I think it would be a sell out especially if they are selling out of 42 gallon blue boy tanks
