interesting as alwasy P. I was thinking that its also asign of intent, paying a bit more for an exclusive. if they invest they want to make something with it, otherwise i feel people could be sitting on your exclusives for cheap and not doing anything with potentially great tracks. ps: Exclusives do they ever expire?
I agree with you brotha. Majors have large budgets already allocated to the projects. The indie artist is scraping by. I try to balance making a living with my beats while making it accessible for the up and coming artist.
Appreciate the gems P. As a producer, you're definitely in my top 5 of all time (his catalog is crazy) but not just because you got the gift, but you actually stand for something. The industry needs more people like you so don't change my brother. Only thing left is for you to start your own label 💪🏾😅
@DJPain1 Why not? You got artists that'll sign and ride with you. The way you conduct business is fair so who better to run an indie label than you? It beats some rando in a suit that never had success versus someone who's actually in the thick of it and has a proven track record.
Great advice. Everyone has to weigh there options and decide what's beneficial and what's not beneficial. Building quality relationships is priceless and crucial for long term success.
Idk if this will be seen my bro but this is extremely helpful and encouraging. I have never come across someone breaking down a split situation to show this thing we do is lucrative.
I appreciate your insight and videos man, you just definitely gotta think of your hustle as a business, gotta pay attention to the market of artists and how the industry is moving. Just gotta go get it.
That's a dope beat for a low exclusive price, if an unsigned artist is willing to pay that much i think they are serious about having a music career and could be a repeat customer.
My "basic" starting rate, is based off of what I generally would expect of any salary I would expect for other things I do for a living (bartending/bar/rest/event mngmnt) which is basically around 80-100 a year, and breaks down to about 30-40 an hr. It takes me up to 5hrs on average, to complete a given best, before any changes the artist requests, or mixing
I'm loving your channel, a lot of great information. I'm just a newbie, making beats for fun with the curiosity of making some money from it. Do you ever do any sort of beat critiques? I'd love to know what you think of what I'm making.
I tried an experiment many years ago and tried $1 a beat leases for 4 particular beats of mines. Within the timeframe of like 3 or 4 months December to either February or March i made alil under $3k. With the beats I was selling for 30 bux i only had 1 or 2 sales within that time frame. I tried to repeat that process a few other times after woth different beats with nowhere near that success. So basically Im saying shit is trial and error and you have to just try shit. I cant be mad at how anyone sells their material.
Not gonna lie. I've least a beat for every song and ended up developing rapport with one of the producers who happens to be in Northern Cali with me. He gave me my sound, I believe. Now we have a collab album in the works
Great video DJ pain, this happen to me last year,I put some beats up,and someone ask me how much he could buy the beat for,and like you said,I didn't know what I wanted to charge the guy, because are you going to over price or under price your beat.and this gave me a bit of a headache.peace bro
Super helpful video thanks bro I’ll be coming back to this. Btw I noticed something in your exclusive contract while doing research that you may want to know about. I’ll email you soon
what does leasing a beat mean? also you never got back to me about my last comment. im sitting on a song i think could make some money but i cant clear the sample. should i just post it?
@@AlfredMuveestarrMickensokay ty i think im going to. i have 3 songs that are all around the same level, i think i'll upload those two before i upload "the one" .
Dj Pain. I have a question. Should a producer master all the beats he or she puts up for lease? Or just upload a really good mix of the beats for least?
I put some exclusive beats online, but I have mostly been sending unreleased beats to buyers who have asked for exclusives. You should put all the beats on Beatstars.
can multiple rappers buy/lease the same beat? why would someone buy a beat another artist has arleady bought?man i dont understand nothing about this music stuff
Yes multiple rappers can lease a beat. Actually depending on what your goals for your music are, leasing a beat is a great option. I do music as a passion project or side hustle, and work a day job to take care of bills. I’ve been leasing beats for over 10 years, and honestly only heard another artist use the same beat once.
Why wouldnt they your primary objective when starting out should be showcase your talent to grow a following/fanbase so as long as the beat is hot and you bbq that ish ot doesnt matter if its leased or exclusive
Wont buy a $250 beat that can make them into the next superstar or at least jump start their career but can spend same amount on Jordans; which will do nothing for their career all it will do is make them a target for robberies 😂 you can’t make this shit up bro
Hi DJ Pain! Should i focus on quality or quantity? I really want to make a beat a day but i dont like the beats that come out of it. At the same time i really get burned out from working days/weeks on the same beat. Help! thnx for you time ;)
You can do both, but for now, focus on whichever area you need improvement in. If you need to improve your musicality, focus on that and then work on efficiency so you can create more beats.
It would be the wrong move if you only did it for the money but if you listen to his song and you thought it was hot even though he was a nobody maybe you just gave him the beat and said you owe me
You just said the main thing that needed to be said I make pretty damn good beats but I guarantee you that if I put my artist on to beats that I bought online I go a lot further a lot faster
You seem like anything or perform just about any job in the music business what makes you want to keep giving us this good information rather than working in the studio with artists and coming up with hits
I guess it just goes to show that it's a lot harder than it seems because it seems like you could kind of forget about giving us this information for a while and just handpick a few good artists you wanted to work with and go do that and like take over the whole real music scene
I am not smart enough to navigate or live in the world that you live in I strictly make music and need someone like yourself to help with the business and recording end
I feel like if I just sit down in your studio with my guitar modeler and played you some music that you would be interested in building a different type of beat and using samples that are royalty free

In "Rodeo remix", Flo Milli used the word "pain" TWICE!! Coincidence? I think not lol. Nice work on that beat btw

If someone buys exclusives to a beat that has been leased several times already how does that work? Are they buying the exclusive “subject to”?
