Thank you as always Todd for your honest scans and reviews. Wish you good luck on your returning the radio & hope the follow up is without the issues you're currently experiencing.
Just did a scan of the MW band on my ATS-909X2 (battery power) and I didn't find any of the spurious tones todderbert heard on his unit. My ATS-909X2 = VER 073.
@@landonmiller6943 That's interesting that you have software version 073. I bought mine in April 2023 and have software version 078 and have spurious tones.
The whine noise seems to be from the LCD screen. The strong tone(s) seems to be from something else, perhaps lack of enough shielding on the DSP chip on the circuit board. Sangean needs to fix both of these problems.
I have the old Sangean ATS909 (before the X models), it does not suffer from these internal generated noises and it is an excellent DX'er on medium and long waves with it's own internal ferrite antenna.
Hey Todd, I’ve been obsessed with your videos lately. They’re just so satisfying to watch. Thanks for all you do. I’m going to purchase this radio (after reading tons of reviews on basically every competitor to it) and I’ve also watched pretty much all the competitor videos that you’ve posted. Have you thought about just exchanging the radio for a new one to see if it still has spurious tones? Wonder if it’s just a bad unit? I’ve not really read any very recent reviews talking about that issue.
Just got mine and I can't find a way to turn on the back light full time. It's version 078. It would be nice to have a power off default where the time is displayed in the largest part of the screen. Perfect for using the radio as an alarm. I know it would add to battery drain, but this could be explained in the manual. What do you think?
I just purchased this radio. Version 073. Sadly, it has the tones. It’s not just yours. Very annoying. I’m sending it back. Thanks for the confirmation!
Dear Todd, love that you alerted us to the internally-generated spurious tones; don't buy your updated model yet. I just got this radio from Amazon (mid-April 2023) and it is software version 078 ...I got that by holding the big Enter key with the radio turned off...I checked it repeatedly since 3s and 8s can be confusing, but I definitely have 078 software...five "notches" higher than your review model. The AM band spurious tones are still prominently there. ugh! I'm using non-rechargeable Energizer AAx4 battery power. It's like an internal component is improperly shielded. I live in St Charles IL and listen to same stations as you...nothing fixed yet by Sangean. Also tested the radio down in Champaign at U of I, same ugly tones (so not location based). I own the previous 909x (software version P01) and it doesn't have the spurious tones at all. Sangean, fix this!!!! 📻
This reply is directly from Sangean America copied from a forum discussing firmware 078 (circa early 2022): “Software version 0.78 is a compatibility update for the new LCD hardware in the ATS-909×2 this update is only for units that use the new BU91510KV LCD display. it does not improve the performance of the ATS-909×2”. The LCD screen hardware was changed in April 2022 for reasons not specified. Sangean notes that radios made before that date have the original LCD screen and are not compatible with the Ver 078 firmware.
One thing i would have wanted on the Sangean: a BIG TIME display while in standby mode!! - its a "waste of space" to let that big display be empty on standby!! - instead they could have put the time display there...and the LW and MW bands are totally dead here in Sweden, no broadcasts on these bands in Sweden anymore...thats a pity - just my 50c....greets, Levi in Sweden -- (nice presentation of the radio, - and i don´t have those tones on my radio)

Bought of these from Amazon.
The Sangean 909X2 is beautiful receiver (love the airband coverage!), a perfect companion to the Sangean SR-35!
Do you have the high pitched Spurious tones?

Maybe they added them back!
I have this radio and love it. Thanks for the walkthrough and scan. And you totally sound like Steve Carell!!

Good video,Im still using the first Sangean 909 they made 2006 its still going strong.

Sangean is one of the best from looks, build, quality and performance!

Mine from April 2023 (v078) also has prominent spurious tones.
Hej Todderbert thanks for the bandscan take care and have a nice week.

Great radio. Easy to read screen but one nasty issue the power supply is a switching power supply, so it picks up a buzz on medium wave band.

I'm looking forward to seeing a re-review in a year.
The band width graphic is dumb IMHO. Just show us the number. Thank you for posting.
Has Sangean responded to you about these issues?
nope.

Awful (those tones, not your review).
I can't believe you get such a huge flaw on a top-end radio.
Spend all that money for hearing only fm! In a few countries there are not even many fm stations anymore! Everything goes on net.
