Are you serious? Someone told you that the local currency Riel won’t be accepted by locals because you’re a foreigner and because of that they will want US dollars instead? Hogwash! Never heard of such an idiotic thing. I’ve lived here for 2 years and use both currencies all the time with locals. Cambodia is a wonderful country full of happy, friendly, accomodating people. I’ll never return to the US to live. I ❤️ it here! 😎
No arguments here. You have to experience it for yourself before drawing any conclusions. I found no difference between paying in Riel and USD for the most part. Either was happily accepted. Typically when paying in USD, I got change back in Riel, which is fine by me. Sometimes I got a mix of both. Another fallacy is that pickpocketing and phone snatching is rampant. I know it exists, but I haven't seen any evidence of it and feel completely safe walking around, especially during the daytime.
@@Stevowowww . I lived in PP for 18 years (2000 -- 2018) and I was never asked once, refused as to how I was going to pay. The rule of thumb is that you use the Riel for smaller transactions, and the US for larger transactions. A tiny tear or some other blemish on a US dollar could be a real issue back then for small street vendors to accept it. But I've heard that the new PM has change the policy that all US bills should be accepted as ''legal tender''. I'm sure how many locals have received this memo, so they may be sticking to their old ways. I'll find out for sure when I retire in Cambodia in late 2025. ...

Cambodia has come a long way since its civil war was officially ended in 1998 and they had to live through the horrific genocide from 1975 to 1979. The country started to develop within the last 20 years as most of the infrastructure was destroyed from the prolonged civil war. I left the country in late 1979 after most of my family members did not survive the genocide. I've visited my sole surviving sister every for the last ten years who currently still lives in Phnom Penh since my retirement from US. Peace and enjoy your trip from Minnesota ✌️
Thank you for sharing that my friend. I'm so sorry about your losses. I passed the Killing Fields as you'll see in an upcoming vlog, but just could not bring myself to go inside. The mass genocide is incomprehensible....So happy to know you're able to visit your sister and return home. Stay well my friend🙏
If you're in the southeast asia, best to use the Grab app for taxi so they don't overcharge you. The airport ride was $5 max, but taxi dudes over there would try to hustle people.
