Eric Marienthal Alto Saxophone Solo Transcription on Blue Miles

- Here is one of my favorite saxophone blues solos! Frankly, this is one of the changing points in my life where I decided that playing that saxophone must be reaaaally cool :) Eric Marienthal is truely killing it here!
This tune by the Chick Corea Elektric Band got a Grammy nomination for Best Instrumental Composition, which is kind of funny because the melody on this tunes is based on a Miles Davis solo on Straight No Chaser.
There are some little tricks in here:
-L.D. means lip down. On a extra note for this in bar 28, he is already fingering the F natural but for a moment starting with a very low embouchure
-Split Tone is quite self explanatory, split that tone! :)
-Trillers here are always between an A and a C a minor third above

How does Eric and others do that crazy "slide" almost from the altissimo range? Is it just super fast chromatic altissimo fingerings? Its the part when it goes an octave from written (the G to D)... I've looked everywhere and can't find out how people get that effect.

That's pressing the hand down really fast with 1,2,3 in the right hand, like a triller indeed. The second option you give could also be a nice effect, but is not what he is doing here.
I do it by finding an altiss fingering that is really "flexible" and then do all the work with the tongue
Dan never thought about doing it that way, what fingering do you use? I suppose a G is pretty stable and has a bunch of wiggle room

Hi Ed, bit difficult to explain with text, but probably I'll make a tutorial on that in the near future so stay on the watch out for our videos :)
But you can start with practising overtones on the low Bb, B, C and C#. Use those notes (for example a low Bb) and then try to get out the Bb an octave higher with only adjusting you mouth a tiny bit. Then try to get a F above, then a Bb (so two octaves above the note you are actually paying). That's anyway a good exercise for altissimo and for sound!
