So happy you enjoyed this, Angela! This was a HUGE hit back in ‘79! A true jazz-rock fusion anthem! 😊
Hi Angela, Spyro Gyra is an amazing Jazz Band that plays high quality & elite instrumentals, they are absolutely fantastic!!! Thanks for this reaction too!!!
Thank You for this!! From my Hometown of Buffalo, New York!! They just had their 50th Anniversary concert at my Alma Mater Buffalo State University in April 28th. Excellent Choice!!
1979 baby!!! One of all-time favorite jazz pieces!!!
They did a live remote hits mashup during Covid that was nice to hear and see😊
Smooth, late night easy listening Jazz from the hallowed halls of Memory Lane....
It's very rare young gen reaction to old school. smooth jazz. Spyro Gyra is one of the best of it.
I like the song and LOVE your smile.💛
Hi Angela!! You pretty much said all that I could say! And I like that!! What caught MY ears was the drums!! And how tight all the instruments were, in other words, how in sync they were! Great song! Thanks again Angela! Bye🦋
Blimey this takes me back I saw them back in the day my parents took me to see them at the Oxford Apollo theater in Oxford when I was 15 brilliant ❤😊😊
1:23 - It opened countless Radio shows around the world in the 80's. Everyone heard it somewhere
It’s so cool to see someone reacting to this group! I had never even heard of them until a few years back when I found some of their albums on UA-cam and really enjoyed them!
This was a great band, loved their music
Hey Angela, now that you've crossed over into the world of true Smooth Jazz you need to check out the Rippingtons, Earl Klugh, Paul Hardcastle, Najee and so many others. Thanks for this reaction!
Definitely Rippingtons would be good, starting with Tourist in Paradise. She could listen to some Tijuana Brass as well, although not the same sound.
Wow, this takes me back. Haven't thought about this song in years. Nice to hear it again.
Spyro Gyra ... Soft "G" ... So much good jazz fusion from them... Jay Beckenstein on alto sax and Tom Schuman on keyboards were the mainstays but they've had numerous members in the 50 years they've been making music. Incognito and City Kids are Epic albums.
Bought this album when it first came out. Morning Dance is one of my favorite pieces.
This song was Spyro Gyra's one and only Top 40 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. This awesome song did peaked at the #24 spot in the summer of 1979. A definite summer banger song indeed!!! By the way Angela, the instrument that you heard in the middle of song is called a marimba, not a xylophone.
Such an eclectic mix of sounds: steel drums, sax, xylophone & claps to go out.
Maybe my favorite song of all time! Thanks for this reaction, so glad you enjoyed it!
Ah man this is what I would pop in when I was headed out to go scuba diving, I don't know why but it always just seemed right.
This song is a classic I heard as a kid and forgot about for decades until a few weeks ago when it popped up on an Xfinity music channel. I was just like you, on some, "Hold up. I know this jawn right here... " Haha.
I'm like you, I instantly knew the intro also. Forever since I heard the full version.
Always liked this, especially the steel-drum intro (?). Thanks for this one Angela.
Love seeing you groove on tunes that I listened to back in the day. Another S.G. song worth reacting to is "Catching the Sun"
I saw these guys in concert back in the late 1980's. Believe it or not, it was the absolute LOUDEST concert I've ever been to. I know it sounds hard to believe, but they had the amps turned up full freaking blast. Louder than Metallica, Def Lepard, Meatloaf, or any other band I've seen in person. The only thing that has come close is when I was standing right in front of the speakers during a Steve Aoki EDM show.
And I believe the instrument you are hearing is a marimba, but it looks a lot like a xylophone.
Saw them in Rochester New York. Awesome!
Nice. Interesting.
A Smooth Jazz favorite of mine
Fattburger also has some awesome tunes 😊
This was a great one and I am glad to see you reacted to it. Definitely check out the Rippingtons as well.
Sprio jira is how it's pronounced
Spy-roh Jy-rah
I think that trumpet part may have been on a game show like price is right.
You could tie into the whole album. You won't be disappointed
This song has been used a zillion times on various daytime TV talk/news shows, as it is catchy, tuneful, and makes for great transitions between talk segments. I'm sure you heard it several times over the years on shows like that.
As others have pointed out, despite the warm beach/Caribbean sound that makes you think you're hearing the wind in the palm trees, Spiro Gyra is from Buffalo, NY. Almost no one would guess that.
The station I listened to back in the late 70s and early 80s played this SO much, I started getting tired of it. Then, I forgot about it. Despite being bored with it back then, it was a joy to hear it this evening. Thank you!
Lovely Angela.
It's pronounced "speye-ro jyra" (long I). I don't know if this is true, but a long time ago I heard that the band was on the verge of breaking up and they recorded this song as a farewell to their fans. A dj started playing it on the radio (in Buffalo NY if I am remembering correctly) and it took off from there. If that's not the right story it should be!
Bought this album when it first came out. Morning Dance is one of my favorite pieces.
Try Swinging Shepherd Blues by Moe Koffman.
Freshly out of high school the group I was in we perform this song you can't help but feel good
Great request! Hadn't heard this in a long long time. Thanks for the reaction!
I wanted to take this extra moment to recommend somethings to you! I am a fan of many different musical genres and eras! Sticking to the Smooth Jazz category, I suggest you listen to the following artists! Dave Koz, Jessy J, Grover Washington Jr, Brian Culberson, and of course Kenny G, among many, many others! One song in particular that may make you weep is Paradise by Kenny G! It is a beyond amazing tune that always brings out very deep memories and emotions in me! Have a great one!
Hiroshima, Najee, George Howard, Jean Luc Ponty.... 😎
Nice! Haven’t heard this in a while, definitely a classic. Thanks!
Havana and San Juan are amazing, also.
Seems like one of those morning shows like GMA used to intro this
Groovy! You reacted to an early Smooth Jazz groove! I think it came out in the late 1970's or early 1980's! Fire 🔥 song, and until whenever!
79
Yeah, that went right over my head! It must be a Mandela effect or a glitch in the matrix!
Thank you for this song but for something totally opposite in feelin' I would love for you to try "Let It Be Me" by Ray LaMontagne
For a "similar" sound from a similar time period, listen to "Birdland" by Weather Report.
Wow, good choice of music. Please react to Mezzoforte
This song was used in a lot of 1980s porn films, lol.
The 'G' in 'Gyra' is soft.....as in 'gym'. #fyi
Have not heard this n years. The name GYra actually is pronounced like Jyra. Who doesn't love jazz??
