Welcome to LivingPianos.com, I'm Robert Estrin. Today I am giving a tutorial on how to play Burgmüller's The Limpid Stream. I have a bunch of Burgmüller tutorials for you. This is another beautiful piece. What's great about these pieces of Burgmüller is that they're accessible even if you don't have a virtuoso technique. They are wonderful pieces of music, each with its own unique voice, and this is no exception. What I'm going to do for you first is play the piece. Then I will go through it thoroughly, showing you how to practice all sections of it and how to get the most out of this wonderful piece of music.

I am so glad you have continued this series. I have finished several method books for Level One. Faber, La Méthode Rose and John Thompson. Then I went back to page one on these books to work on my sightreading, and to really reinforce the basics. I started playing Czerny, but didn't find them musical.
My piano teacher was chuffed when I decided to use Moulin de Ville as my level two method. I have also transposed these into other keys, for now up to three sharps and flats.
Your other analysis videos of Burgmüller were THE best instructional videos for when you started them about six years ago. Merci beaucoup, since I'm working on this level. I haven't yet transposed this too much, but it really helps.

I don't know the piece, but the multiple technique observations in this piece were extremely useful and transferable. Whenever you break playing down to absolute basics, I really love it. Thanks Robert!

That's good to know. I may do more of these types of videos if people like them!

@@LivingPianosVideos I certainly love them Robert. I download them to add to my piano tutorials library. I particularly like to see simpler topics, simply explained, but with the experience and insights of a virtuoso pianist. Thanks again!

I love the Burgmuller etudes - I started learning this piece with my teacher before she retired. Thank you for the video, it will be really helpful!

How long had you been playing when you started learning it? How did you find it when you had to change teachers?

@@Martial-Mat I've been learning for some years now but while I was working I didn't really have the time to immerse myself in practice. I've known my teacher for a very long time - we did music theory and singing in addition to piano, and when she retired we went on with a sort of private ad-hoc arrangement, on an irregular basis. Since she gave up completely I haven't actually wanted the weekly commitment, so I just carried on alone with the help of UA-cam videos. I recently subscribed to an online tuition package which has been very useful. I did the early ABRSM grades and came across Burgmuller's Harmonie des Anges and loved it - and then found that the pieces appealed to me and suited my small hands! I have noticed over the years that some pieces I love to hear, I don't actually enjoy playing!

@@denisehill7769 Fascinating. So losing your teacher didn't diminish your desire to play?
Have you found youtube videos to be an adequate substitute? What about the online course? I've been doing an online course, but I'm starting to have serious doubts that it will ever get me where I want to go.
There's not enough theory, nor enough advice on how to cope with challenging technique. Or maybe I'm just abnormally bad at playing.

@@Martial-Mat I'm sure you're not abnormally bad, but I think there is no substitute in being one on one with a teacher who can demonstrate stuff and check your body and hand positions. I found that the combination of years of lessons and watching people on YT works great, there are things my teacher didn't cover and vice versa. My biggest pitfall, still is and always has been, is self-discipline - and no teacher can give you that. The online course is good for filling in the gaps; I think you have to find the right one for you. The one I'm following uses the Faber Piano Adventures book, which I actually dislike, but her videos are brilliant so I'm not overly bothered about slavishly following the book anyway. As to theory, I did mine by following the ABRSM exam syllabus from grade 1 onwards, then when I got there I did grades 4 and 5; you might find some good resources on the ABRSM site, such as their theory books; Discovering Music Theory which I think is aimed at children but would also be great for adults with absolutely no knowledge; and the more adult Music Theory In Practice, which I used along with my teacher. I also bought the past exam papers and worked through them - they have the answer papers if you don't have someone to check your answers. Sorry this is a long ramble! Finally, as my teacher used to say, "You did after all choose one of the hardest instruments to learn - but keep at it, be patient, and you will be amazed at how far you can progress." You can do it, don't get downhearted; maybe going for a few lessons might be what you need to get going?

I would recommend that any serious pianist watch this entire series. There was one glitch and I think it was video number 5 actually showed number 15. And then the videos stopped. Until now, and we are all winners.
Maybe Robert should release the series as a Level Two or Three Method Book?
