As a former S Korean ambassador to Vienna more than 22 years ago, I have great pleasure, on the occasion of the S Korean Thankgiving Day, in listening to Mozart Requiem KV626 played by Wiener Phil and conducted by Georg Solti, via www.youtube.com. It's especially rewarding to recall that my wife and I were present at the historic live performance of Mozart's last piece on 5 December 1991 at St Stephen's Cathedral, Vienna.

not even for a moment i get an impression of listening to an opera or a symphonic concert. It`s just pure, humble music accompaniament for a funeral mass. Nothing draws too much attention to itself, soloist remain "silent" and withdrawn, not even for a second showing off their capabilities. Man forgets that he listens to a top tier orchestra with top tier soloist and a top tier 79 years old conductor. Pure beauty, doing only justice to the composition itself. Perfect. After I compared the most recommended 15-20 performances, this is the one, I would play to my son, or buy a CD for my father.
I forgot to add: beacuse of it`s simplicity, this beauty is easy to overlook, too "normal", as if it was played by some humble school ensamble. Solti didn`t have to prove anything to anyone anymore, so he didn`t try too hard :-)
Arleen Auger was already diagnosed with the brain tumor that killed her two years later. What a soprano - and what a loss. She was said to have been much admired by Cecilia Bartoli.
