This seems like a good place to post my request for a David Mazzucchelli interview... Rubber Blanket is a game-changer! I still hold out for a reprint collection of his short stories published over the last 30 years or so in various magazines...

I don't think it was Toth himself, but I remember someone remarking about how Toth would draw all of the details of, say, seated legs underneath a table, make sure he got the folds, the positioning, the carpentry in there correctly...and then proceed to black out almost all of the shapes in ink. When you see it in silhouette you don't even question its authenticity.

You should check out the Absolute Killing Joke, too. It's similarly crafted - has both colorings on two different paper stocks and has the entire Alan Moore script in the back matter. Great book.

I remember picking this off the stand and being amazed-Mazzucchelli & Miller were coming off “Born Again “, bringing their combined talents to the Dark Knight. Shame DC followed this with Barr, Davis/early McFarlane’s “Year Two” and Max Collins on the main comic (which brought us Jason Todd), like Marvel going to a Madcap tale after “Born Again “. Excellent overview, Gents! 🖖

You guys gotta stop selling me these books, man - I'm gonna go broke. Also, keep it coming. Also as well, you mentioned Lapham - a shoot interview with Lapham would be awesome.

Thanks for sending me to this video Danny. The attention to detail in the review is a testament to the multifaceted creative process in comics, and in this book in particular. I hope that a full review of this book comes online soon and I would love a whole video discourse on comic gentrification, the most facsinating element in this clip.
Off to watch the Dark Knight Returns review now.

Another great one to look at is the Batman 1989 movie adaption deluxe book. The entire book is side by side comparisons of each page featuring Jerry Ordway's original scanned pages next to the printed version. It's a lot of fun!

David Mazzucchelli definitely had a hand in this book. I remember him being pretty bugged with a deluxe hardcover DC did of the story around 2010 without his involvement that reproduced the colors poorly, even though he helped put together an earlier deluxe hardcover in about 2006. For this book he and Richmond Lewis did new scans for the painted colors and the original coloring volume was scanned from their copies!
I do have to say that there are a few other good Absolute editions out there. The recent Killing Joke volume also includes both colorings, with the Higgins original on a different paper stock, as well as Alan Moore's script. The Sandman Overture volume reprints the entire story from the original art like a small Artist's Edition (though it's a bit obsolete now with the Gallery Edition out) and is also just a damn good looking book like all the Sandman volumes. The recent Arkham Asylum volume has completely new scans of the art by Dave McKean along with a full script, Morrison's breakdowns, and a few of McKean's too. There are others that I'm fond of just for having a neat extra or two (CoIE having a companion book on the history of the series and all the different Earths, Final Crisis being the only edition besides the floppies to have 3D pages and glasses). I won't deny though that for every one of these there are 5 "Batman/Superman Book but Bigger with a few extra pages about making the toyline".

I am absolutely buying this collection. Year One is one of my favorite Batman stories. It is just so tightly plotted, the art is amazing. The atmosphere, world building, etc. Its an example of a perfect comic story. From start to finish. I've read it several times. And there are times where I take it off the shelf just to thumb through it to take in the art.

Excellent video! I have read and enjoyed this book many times, but you provided several insights to this phenomenal work. 1) No mention of Milton Caniff, but his influence seems to be hovering all over this work, particularly his beautiful, atmospheric work on Terry and the Pirates, my favorite adventure strip of all time. 2) Your statement that this is the best Absolute was certainly bold, but it may be correct. My favorite is NEW FRONTIER by Darwyn Cooke, but my copy has a wonderful sketch of Green Lantern by Cooke. Keep up the outstanding work on the channel.

Going through my shelf I noticed V for Vendetta hardcover has a nice reproduction similar to this too but not sure if it’s similar to the original issues. Keep up the good work guys. I gotta second getting Cursed Earth! Make sure you get the new uncensored version that reprints the whole story. The IDW creator collections are great if you just want the art but they don't all read well since the book was rotating artists on the multi-part stories.

Guys - given your commentary here, I have to ask what comics (either floppies or books) do you think really pushed the boundaries of color usage? I'm thinking Steranko as a classic user of color (along with other graphic tricks) who pushed past the status quo. I'd like to hear what you guys think. Thanks!
