Surely you mean Seinfeld for the 90's. That's the one that redefined all these series of today. Friends would not have been picked up if it weren't for Seinfeld's popularity.
gutz1981 I think it will be close for 1-2 with Friends and Seinfeld. It's just my opinion that Friends had more audience appeal than Seinfeld. But you are correct that Seinfeld paved the way for Friends.
@@haydennault2706 Ozzie and Harriet never even cracked the top 10 in its entire run. This show was successful in terms of longevity but doesn't even come close to I Love Lucy on impact and success.
I cast a vote for the Naked City. Like the Twilight Zone, it had many relative unknowns who became television and movie stars and most of the shows were riveting.
This is a solid list. I LOVE your lists! The ONLY thing I would change with this one would be the inclusion of "American Bandstand." I think it pretty much defined the '50s and influenced many other shows after it.... Besides that, great list! :)
I watched Cannonball, Whirlybirds,Highway Patrol, Dragnet, The Lineup,M-Squad,Medic, The life of Riley, and many many more. I was born in 1946 thanks for posting 👍😊
Here are my picks for the top 10 tv shows of the 50's 10) Dennis the menace 9) Gunsmoke 8) Leave it to beaver 7) The Untouchables 6) The Donna Reed Show 5) Perry Maison 4) The lone ranger 3) Lassie ( or jeff's collie) 2) Alfred Hitchcock presents 1) I Love Lucy
I would've ranked "The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriett" much higher. It not only is the second longest-running sitcom in American television history, it was hugely a part of pop culture in '50's America, more so than "Leave It To Beaver". It is apparent that whoever created this list was going by books about '1950's t196v than really researching the period. "Dennis The Menace" and "The Donna Reed Show", while staring in the lat 1950's, really hit their stride in the early 1960's, in many ways, a continuation of the mid-late 1950's but its own era. "Make Room for Daddy/The Danny Thomas Show" ran longer than any of the sitcoms on here and was the most popular of the family sitcoms at the time. One must be careful not to rewrite history, which the Mojo staff has done to a greater or lesser degree here. While "The Honeymooners" deserves the recognition that it does, "The Honeymooners" was a sketch within "The Jackie Gleason Show'", a variety show of the era that was not only a product of its time, it was also an innovator in the comedy-variety field which was not at all represented in this video. That and shows like "Burns and Allen", as well "The Red Skelton Show" deserve their place as definitie 50's tv.
I grew with all those shows , watching them with my parents and siblings. I still remember the Blockbuster Beatles one and never could figure out why those girls screamed like that. (And I liked the Beatles) . The whole family could watch theses shows together, kids learned life lessons instead of how to be rude . Parents had faults but were there to teach their kids right from wrong . Thanks for showing these.
I Love Lucy is by far the best - even though the surroundings have aged, her jokes haven't. The surroundings is an awesome trip down memory lane. I bought the DVD pack of all 9 seasons and watched the whole lot in a one week marathon.
I love the fact that the actor who played the prosecutor in Perry Mason was originally up for the role of Perry Mason, but he recommended Raymond Burr for the role instead.
+Aloha732 Another bit of trivia: Lucy and Desi had to fight long and hard with the CBS brass to get Desi on the show. The higher ups didn't think anyone would believe and/or accept Lucy and Desi as a couple due to their differing ancestries.
They said at the beginning that they are listing the show with the decade they feel its most defined with not when it started. It could still show up in the 60's
Mine 2..fav episode when beav put the stuff in his hair because a student said he looked like a sheep dog...and wally couldnt hold back his laugh at the dinner table🤣🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂
Lovely list but Disney's Zorro deserves a mention as I was thoroughly entertained by that show even though I watched is in the '90's and I'm quiet sure it is still being rerun
There's another issue with these lists. There are many television series which, due to their very lengthy run, have a hard time being linked to a specific decade. While seminal Brit sci-fi show "Doctor Who" is one example (given that there are many different versions of the show), another example would be soap operas, such as the long running "The Young & the Restless" or the Brit soap, "Coronation Street". As soap operas, they don't follow the traditional "season" method of programming, so are harder to pin down. Another difficult type to place would be game shows, such as "The Price is Right", "Wheel of Fortune" or "Jeopardy". These are shows which have been going for decades, so how can they be placed in just one decades?
Pretty solid little list. One of the better ones I've seen on here. Biggest show missing: The Twilight Zone although I suppose that's more a 60s show...
I feel you missed a show here: Quatermass. I understand that you don't seem to realise that TV shows existed outside the USA in the 1950s but in the UK, there was 3 decade-defining science fiction series called "The Quatermass Experiment", "Quatermass II" and "Quatermass and the Pit". At least 1 should have been included on your list. Upon release in the UK, they were extremely popular and had notable cultural influence, it led to council meetings closing early so the councillors wouldn't miss episodes! Quatermass redefined science fiction and covered themes of the 1950s like racism, space travel and scientific responsibility way before they became commonplace thematic elements in the 1960s. It was the first really successful piece of British sci-fi on television and without it, there would not be Dr Who, the Prisoner or any other British sci-fi classics. It also redefined what science fiction could do and is part of the beginning of new-wave science-fiction that began in the 1960s. All 3 series were extremely popular and spawned film adaptations (2 during the 1950s) and one film became notable as been one of the first non-pornographic films to receive a UK X rating. Their impact on science fiction and the 50s culture of the UK cannot be under-estimated and it is because of these reasons they should have had a place. They are also extremely good and hold up today as some of the greatest televised science-fiction. If one is to be decade-defining, Quatermass truly did it and "The Quatermass Experiment" deserves a place (although "Quatermass and the Pit" is superior) because it did truly shape British popular culture in the 1950s and spawned 3 films and 3 more series. It should also be noted that some of it's original ideas on space travel and racism became common staples of US science-fiction and culture not long after, implying an international recognition. I think this is one of the worst omissions you have ever made WatchMojo. Just because it's a genre show and isn't from the USA doesn't mean a spot isn't deserved.
Of course, that's from the warped British perspective of entertainment..."The Minister of Silly Walks"-Monty Python's Flying Circus...I rest my case. Now Bennie Hill was a different thing...
How were the shows selected? Based on the ratings? Im just wondering. Perhaps a " part 2" because some people seem to think certain beloved shows were overlooked in this list.
The Jack Benny Show and Burns And Allen is definitely missing from this list. Just like other shows on this list, they are still funny all these decades later.
How dare you guys not put The Honeymooners at #1! That's the only 1950s show that ppl still watch on TV religiously to this day! That's why they still air it, particularly on New Years Day. I Love Lucy should be #2.

I was pretty sure about #1. My Dad's favorite is #5 though.
I sure hope that Dukes, Smallville, Supernatural, Full House, SVU, Walker, Whose Line, are on this series...or at least one of them!
I actually have the "I love Lucy" series box set. I love this show
Wow, the 50s. SOooooo cool.
How about a list for the top ten Frank Nelson encounters on Jack Benny's show, and one for top ten Jack Benny episodes.
"Mr Ed" I could watch that crazy horse any time it's on television. Yet you forgot to even mention it.
60s
LordShtark It first aired in 1958. Same as The Donna Reed show, and that had a mention.
gutz1981 There was a pilot for Mr. Ed that was shot in 58 that never aired on television. The first episode of Mr. Ed that aired on television was Jan of 61. The Donna Reed Show actually did have its first episode aired in 58.
LordShtark I have just checked to reconfirm. You are correct. I retract my previous statement as it did in fact first air in 61 but did have a un-aired pilot in 58. But still, this was one hell of a show. Thanks for the correction.
