Actually was looking into Nauru, because after looking at passports I was suprised Americans needed a visa for it, which is a big part of its travel problems :(
Good times stopped in Nauru when the fertilizer mining, essentially eons of bird droppings, played out. Its airline's one plane was repossessed. Australia made Nauru an aid client but required it to allow a refugee camp on the island.

You forgot to mention why Nauru is the way it is.... Over a period of 100 years, Britain, Australia and New Zealand has deprived the country of it's only mineral resource, Phosphate. It's land is now barren and unyielding for agriculture. All of its population lives on the perimeter. It literally cannot do anything on its own land except do nothing.
It's sad because this country used to be one of the wealthiest in the world in the 1980s and is now one of the poorest

Nauru is internationally recognised. I'm guessing you meant unrecognised as in people not knowing it exists but just wanted to clear any confusion.
