I love to see new people take interest in 40k, something to note is that this a franchise that revolves around tabletop games that you play with models bought, painted, and controlled by you. The first trailer was for the 9th edition of Wahammer 40k and shows a sister of battle (battle nun) and Space Marine (gene henanced warrior) fighting Necrons (Undead ancient skeletons) in an attempt to reclaim territory from the Necrons. The second trailer is for a game that takes place in 30k, 10,000 years before 40k and is advertizing a game around the events of the Horus Heresy, Where on of the Emperors sons (Horus) lead a rebellion against the imperium due to him being corrupted with dark powers. The main theme of this universe is hope in the face of the darkest time in the history of the Galaxy. We in the community love to see new people and hope that you will have fun in our favorite franchise. I recommend you watch Bricky's Warhammer videos, his 4 videos give you the base knowledge need to enjoy this setting properly.

Stop suggesting bricky to new people! It is a meme channel, memes require prior knowledge on topic. You THINK it is good, because you know what he talks about! And if you are really a fan, you would suggest one of the many great channels out there, instead of a meme channel. I think people like you more of a meme and bricky fan more than 40k. Do any of you actually check anything else other than brick on this hecking platform, repeating his name like parrots everywhere?

gregoryking6776 wrote: "The main theme of this universe is hope in the face of the darkest time"
Pardon me, _hope??_ The opposite in fact! The genre of Warhammer 40K is literally called "Grimdark". It's iconic tagline is _"In the grim darkness of the far future, there is only war."_ The themes of Warhammer 40K are amorality, corruption, religious fanaticism, body horror (esp the Adeptus Mechanicus, Dark Eldar), slavery, brutality, loss, despair, betrayal, a merciless imperial bureaucracy, and fighting endless wars of attrition. Millions die every day across the galaxy. There literally is no "Good Guys" side in Warhammer 40K! (The closest to that might be the Tau?) The Empire of Mankind certainly isn't, and its been rotting from the inside for over 10.000 years by now (since the Horus Heresy), as its undead and insane Emperor sits on his Golden Throne, consuming a thousand souls of sacrificial victims (Psykers) every day so hecan keep powering the Astronomican to guide the voidships through the Warp & keep the forces of Chaos from reaching Holy Terra. (Whichrecently failed.)
40K Mankind has steadily been _losing:_ battles, entire planets (to enemies, or to their own Inquisition calling an Exterminatus orbital bombardment on a planet they consider lost), and with each generation losing ancient high-tech and knowledge of the past. They're falling, not rising.
Technically everyone is fighting everyone else, as the setting is based on a tactical war-simulation tabletop miniatures game.
But the humans have been fighting on all front, against the forces of Chaos and the Chaos gods, the soul-eating Ch'tan and their Necrons, spore-spreading Space-Orks, evil Space-Elves, oh and the endless swarms of Tyranid hive fleets entering the galaxy from the depth of interstellar space that consume the biomass of entire planets to make more Tyranids.
Seriously, Gregory, if you delusionally think Warhammer 40K is about "hope", you have entirely misunderstood the setting and fallen for the propaganda. Or you have watched the 10th Edition trailer with the Primarch Guilliman but entirely missed the heavy sarcasm and resignation in his voice as he talks about "victory", as the trailer goes from the scenes of "Space Marines of the Adeptus Astartes gloriously winning glorious battles in the Indominous Crusade" of Imperial propaganda to the reality of "Imperial Guards and Space Marines getting fucking slaughtered and countless worlds being lost" in the era of the Great Rift rending the galaxy and the Empire in two.

7:05 It's called Wahrammer 40k because it mainly takes place around the year 40,000; in the 41st-42nd millennium. Warhammer: the Horus Heresy takes place in Warhammer 30k; roughly 10,000 years before Warhammer 40k. So it is a prequel (or rather 40k is its sequel, same thing).
Warhammer has a fantasy universe (Warhammer: Fantasy and its sequel/reboot Warhammer: Age of Sigmar) and a sci-fi/space fantasy universe (Warhammer 30k, Warhammer 40k). Both started out as tabletop strategy wargames, but have branched out into a multitude of spinoff strategy games, many video games, books (a LOT of books; like.... in the hundreds), and even animated series.
Warhammer 40k has way more lore than the Lord of the Rings, and that is a monumental feat.

I'm very much a newbie in the WH40k Lore rabbit hole.
    * I agree with the others that Bricky's videos are a good place to start. More bitesized, can be split into smaller chunks, very easy for beginners, plenty of humor and references.
    * Luetin09 is more for "Intermediate-to-Advanced" level of previous knowledge. His videos can be 1-2hr long and he can really deepdive into a single topic. I think his videos are really interesting and good, but I can also see that it would not be a good video to react to on UA-cam. I usually have one of his videos on when I'm lceaning or cooking.
    * WesHammer has some summaries of Warhammer books, he analyze topics, some classic tier lists, etc. I'd say he's somewhere between Bricky and Luetin09 in level of prerequisite knowledge to get the most out of the videos. Still worth a watch though!

The first trailer shows a couple of the human Imperial troop types. A Sister of Battle and a Space Marine. They are fighting Necrons (basically undead), one of the alien threats.
The second is also a 40k vid. It is from the point of view of a rebel Space Marine Primarch who is part of a huge uprising that forms part of the origin lore of the 40k setting. "Father" is the emperor. The Primarchs are lab grown from his DNA and changed to be superhuman. The rebels wind up working for the four ruinous powers, the god of chaos. The setting has psychic powers and they are tied in with chaos as well. Likely the sister was healing herself with a psi power in the first vid.
With 40k it is important to bear in mind that 1: a lot of it is satire turned up to 11 2: there are no good guys in the setting 3: a lot of the setting is pure rule of cool and is not intended to make that much sense.

Warhammer is literally books, and books, and books long full of lore. As with everyone here in the comments, I recommend looking up Bricky's Warhammer "Factions Explained" videos, there are two. At least, if you are interested of course lol. He has a great amount of Charisma and a love for this franchise which he uses to make for a fun teaching experience, and he just touches things on the surface so there is little of that overwhelming feeling.
That aside, this is a tabletop war simulation game, complete with models that you create and paint yourself and put on a big table (30 or 60 inches by 44 inches) and you fight one other person and their army, these trailers are for all sorts of expansions, model reveals, even some video game adaptations, etc.

So, Warhammer 40,000 (aka Warhammer 40k) is set in the 41st Millennium. The Horus Heresy is part of the same timeline, but takes place in the 31st Millennium (10,000 years earlier), and was a galaxy wide civil war in the human empire as Horus, one of the Emperor's sons, alongside several of his brothers, turned against their father. The fallout from that still impacts the galaxy all those millennia later. Bricky has a couple of great videos explaining the entire setting, human and aliens - although be warned, they're extremely long watches (and even then, it's still a skim over the lore - the Warhammer universe is incredibly rich and deep).

Long story short, Warhammer 40,000 is the sci-fi wargame set in the 41st millennium.
The Horus Heresy is part of the 'history' of 40k, something about ten thousand years ago, and it's basically the biblical war in heaven, only instead of God and Satan it's The Emperor and his lieutenant, Horus (the first of his genetically engineered 'children'), and instead of angels with flaming swords you have beefy boys in power armour with chainsaw swords.
40K is basically the dark ages in space, and an amalgamation of pop-culture influences that appealed to a group of college kids and metalheads in the 80s, wearing its distinctly British vibe quite openly.
It's pretty wild, just avoid anyone that looks like they're taking it a little *too* seriously

YES! Welcome to the Holy Imperium brother. Long live the God Emperor! "May the faithless Xeno burn in holy prometheum, May the heretic know only fear, May the foul mutant suffer, May the Emperor's mercy grant them a swift death." - A commissar somewhere.
On the real tho so glad you've discovered Warhammer it's an amazing universe with very heavy dark themes. The differences between 40K and fantasy Warhammer is many, but there are many similarities in them as well. They are technically different universes but share some of the same big names and characters for instance the God Emperor is only in 40K, but theres a guy names Sigmar who fills a kinda similar role in the fantasy version, but then you have more direct comparisons like the 4 Chaos Gods being Tzeentch, Khorne, Nurgle, and the youngest of the 4 gods Slaneesh who share the same names and everything with their fanatsy and 40K counterparts. Would highly highly recommend watching Bricky for his lore videos because he makes them very digestible to new 40K fans, and also go take a look at Astartes which is an amazingly animated video made and produced by one guy who has now since been hired by Games Workshop, and his animation has been made into official cannon.

Space marine's aren't robots but wireing their armour to their nervous systems is one of many ways they've been operated on. Horus had daddy issues in 30K because the Emperor kept Chaos secret from him and tried to spread reasoning and atheist enlightenment, then Horus really liked Chaos when he got acquainted with it. 10,000 years later the Empire is a morbid xenophobic ruin fighting on it's back foot and worshipping the Emperor while he's too crippled and half dead to stop them because of Horus messing it up.

    Quick Who is who:
Guys at the beginning of the first Trailer, getting atomised: Imperial Guard, regular humans with laserguns and propably shat pants
Women with white hair and power armour: Adeptus Sororitas, guns with nuns and yes, she praied the pain awai
Dudes in power armore(in both Trailers): Space marines, geneticaly enhanced super soldiers. The blue ones are the poster boys of 40k
Guy in the black Armour: Horus, an artificial Demigod, created by the God-Emperor of Mankind, who started a civil war, that is one of the creation myths of 40k. He was chosen by 4 flavors of Satan on steroids and said war started the decline of humanity...
hope it helps, now watch Brickys videos

Warhammer 40K is set in the 41 millennium, and Warhammer is medieval. In 40K, it's humans and aliens, and in Warhammer, it humans, dwarfs, elves, orks and vampires and more

It is the 41st Millennium. For more than a hundred centuries the Emperor of Mankind has sat immobile on the Golden Throne of Earth. He is the master of mankind by the will of the gods and master of a million worlds by the might of His inexhaustible armies. He is a rotting carcass writhing invisibly with power from the Dark Age of Technology. He is the Carrion Lord of the vast Imperium of Man for whom a thousand souls are sacrificed every day so that He may never truly die.
Yet even in His deathless state, the Emperor continues His eternal vigilance. Mighty battlefleets cross the daemon-infested miasma of the Warp, the only route between distant stars, their way lit by the Astronomican, the psychic manifestation of the Emperor's will. Vast armies give battle in His name on uncounted worlds. Greatest amongst His soldiers are the Adeptus Astartes, the Space Marines, bio-engineered super-warriors. Their comrades in arms are legion: the Imperial Guard and countless planetary defence forces, the ever-vigilant Inquisition and the Tech-priests of the Adeptus Mechanicus to name only a few. But for all their multitudes, they are barely enough to hold off the ever-present threat to humanity from aliens, heretics, mutants -- and far, far worse.
To be a man in such times is to be one amongst untold billions. It is to live in the cruelest and most bloody regime imaginable. These are the tales of those times. Forget the power of technology and science, for so much has been forgotten, never to be relearned. Forget the promise of progress and understanding, for in the grim dark future there is only war. There is no peace amongst the stars, only an eternity of carnage and slaughter, and the laughter of thirsting gods.
You have enter the grimdarkness of the future my friend.

Warhammer 40k: is the present and main timeline and sci-fi theme one
Warhammer Horus Heresy: A timeline before main one, before one of the key event of Humankind happened
Warhammer Fantasy/Old World: A different universe, with orc, elf, dwarf, and so on. DnD style thing
Warhammer Age of Sigmar: A timeline after the end of Warhammer Fantasy/Old World
Warhammer Blood Bowl: A world based on Fantasy/Old World, but more of a comical one where there's a bloody sport to compete rather than full on scale war
That's pretty much simplified most of it, and all I could think of.

Quick version: Warhammer Fantasy (often called just Warhammer) is a fantasy setting (duh) with a number of big differences but still kind of in the same 'setting' without continuity. The connection between them is sort of weird and even I don't know all of the interplay. Anyway, Warhammer 40k came after as I understand and just ramped up the grimdark scifi to 21. Not gonna explain more than that except that the Horus Heresy was a cluster and a half. Basically a turbo-giga-chadwick decided to make humanity the bestest ever and wanted it to be the whole galaxy's problem, then proceeded to do so. He made twenty sons that were genetically modifies super-chads to lead his legions and command his Imperium after the fact. They got scattered, all hell broke loose, some hell-daemon-thingies happened, and half of the Primarchs, the 'sons', defected with Horus who had been corrupted by Chaos gods and essentially fought so hard the Imperium backstepped in tech and is now a super religious hyper-empire xenophobic cesspool of radical psychopaths and martyrs. Did I mention that the emperor is atheist?
It's a crazy ride, highly recommend Majorkill for funny ADHD friendly snippets, Bricky for funny but more in depth stuff, and just throw a dart at any of the other ones most lore content is pretty good here on the youtubez.

Welcome to the insane rabbit hole named Warhammer. Outside of Bricky's videos, I would also recommend "WTF is Warhammer 40k" by Luetin09 and "The Imperium of Man" by Templin institute. Both very good introductions too. Otherwise other notable channels with great content: Weshammer, Baldemort, Majorkill, Remembrancer, Adeptus Ridiculous, Arch (little too political, but has a dry humour I like). Many of Trailers and shorts are amazingly done. Definitely check out Astartes (part 1-5) and after a bit of diving into lore of Horus heresy "Death of Hope" (trailers 1&2 and Anarchy reigns).
    Have fun.

Warhammer 40k is a science fiction universe (with a bit of fantasy) in the far future of our world (39000+ years from now) and just Warhammer is a fantasy / mediaval world.
Second video is Horus Heresy (30K) which happened 10,000 years before (Emperor was still mostly alive back then).
The guy it the video, Horus is talking about his dad, The Emperor (no other name) and how he betrayed his dad because his dad had secret plans for humanity and that he lied to his 20 sons and other drama.
He (Horus guy) was the favorite of his sons and a leader of his vast armies.
The galaxy went to shit after that in the next 10,000 years... Hence 40K is the shittest war torn time the galaxy ever knew...
These are good light videos to start with, you should check out Astartes mini series of animations next. Great animation and atmosphere.
Bricky's timeline video is most of everything you need to understand the story, with a bit of memes thrown in, with humoristic takes.
Majorkill will be a bit confusing. He has memey and short videos but it's about details and snippets from lore.
Luetin09's videos are good, but very loooong. He also has a good video explaining what is WH40K, but it has more of a serious tone.
Funny thing is that each of these creators is from a different English speaking country all over the world.

theres fantasy warhammer, and scifi warhammer. what you saw in both videos was scifi warhammer, but one takes place in 30k (the year 30,000), and the other in 40k (the year 40,000) same world/universe, but years apart.
horus heresy is 30k and relates to the second video you saw. the main-game is 40k (well, we're technically in 41k by now, but its still called 40k), which is the first video you saw.

Okay, Warhammer 40K is the main sci-fi setting. The Horus Heresy takes place ten thousand years before 40K. Warhammer Fantasy is medieval fantasy. Age of Sigmar is fantasy again but more extreme. When people just say Warhammer, it’s like the blanket term for all the settings as a whole.

So there are 3 main "Warhammers". The first one is known as just Warhammer or best known as Warhammer Fantasy which has your classic elves, dragons and knights all in a medieval-ish fantasy setting. then there is Warhammer 40,000 (or 40k) and Warhammer: The Horus Heresy. Warhammer 40k takes place in the year 40,000 while the horus heresy takes place the year 30,000.

Also, Warhammer is generally broken into two main groups fantasy and scifi.
The fantasy is called Age of Sigmar (originally called Warhammer Fantasy) and 40K (or Warhammer 40K)
The robo skeletons are called Necrons. They're essentially Egyptian Terminators. The white-haired lady is a Sister of battle. She's a nun with a gun.
Big man in blue armor is a space marine. Super soldier poster boy of the franchise.
