- We all have asked ourselves this deep, ancient question. How many Grunts are there in the original Halo games? So we set out to count every single grunt in the original halo games. Which Halo is gonna have the most Grunts? Halo CE, Halo 2 or Halo 3?

@@StegoAqua Theres some Halo 3 marines on Floodgate that share the same extremely low health, along with a missile turret marine on the storm, same with Halo CE, the Crewmen, also those marines on 343 guilty spark that you encounter halfway through the mission. Honestly Tayari Plaza and Kizingo BLDV and NMPD HQ are the only 3 missions of ODST i can think of that have those shitty marines

Well how many pixels can you name?
I'm gonna assume everything's running natively on its original hardware so we don't have to worry about framerate and resolution variation
CE ran at 640x480 and was not capable of widescreen. That's 307,200 pixels per frame. Chances are the copy you played was NTSC and ran at 30 FPS, but there was a laggy PAL version that ran at 25. The campaign usually ran for a little under 10 hours, or 36,000 seconds * 30 FPS * 307,200 pixels = 331,776,000,000 pixels
Halo 2 ran at 720x480 in widescreen mode, which gives us 345,600 pixels per frame. Information on its original framerate is sparse, but I think it's safe to assume it also held a stable 30. The difficulties were so wildly tuned that your campaign could take a lot longer depending on what you played on, but as long as you know what you're doing and stay off of Legendary it should take about nine hours or 32,400 seconds * 30 FPS * 345,600 pixels = 335,923,200,000 pixels
Halo 3 used a rather unusual double-buffered 1152×640, which the 360 converted to its 720p rendering setting. That's a whopping 737,280 pixels per frame. It also held a stable 30 FPS with a brisk 8 hour campaign, which comes out to 28,800 seconds * 30 FPS * 737,280 pixels = 637,009,920,000
Finally, CE: 331,776,000,000 + Halo 2: 335,923,200,000 + Halo 3: 637,009,920,000 = a grand total of... 1,304,709,120,000 pixels (1.3 trillion). I would convert that to megapixels, but the fraction is so large Wolfram refuses to reduce it

Halo 3 would be a problem because Tank Pure Forms can spawn in flood infection forms, so it can skew the counting.

@@Arkiasis ah. Honestly, we didn’t do the lockdowns properly in the US. Each state handled it differently. My state (Georgia) had maybe 2 or 3 weeks of a lockdown? But even then it wasn’t enforced.
If we had done a legitimate 2 month hard lockedown, and then quarantined the elderly or immunocompromised, we probably wouldn’t have had such a high case-rate.
I already knew CE would have the most grunts. I've played through the original trilogy so many times. They're such great games.

In the mission in reach where you are pushing towards the launch facility, if you don’t go through the doors sprit drop ships fly in every time you clear the enemies out and pelicans fly in whenever all the marines die. It’s a cool mini-firefight

Halo: Reach technically has an infinite number of grunts. On long night of solace, once you destroy the wraith before going into the station an infinite number of dropships will come to drop infantry.

It seems like the Grunt’s new-found courage let them drive Ghosts in Halo 3.
In Halo 2 as the Arbiter you can clear all the Brutes in varius sections of the last few levels and it will inspire grunts to join you as Allies and they'll even pilot Ghosts. So I like to think that single handedly it was the Arbiter who gave them this confidence.

So, in halo 3 during the warthog run there are more grunts. During one of the sections with three paths there is a group of them. One has a fuel rod cannon and kinda let's you know where they are. It's hard to get to them but they are there
Also, I wonder if there is a way to check how close you were by looking through the code

a good idea would be to divide total grunts by total par mission time in order to figure out each games grunts/minute.

Pretty sure there are grunts in halo 3's Halo mission. A group of them running away as a pillar hits the metal plates during the hog run.

I mean, it kind of makes sense with the addition of more enemy types (like drones for instance) in Halo 2 and 3. With the addition of new enemies, they would have to balance the total number of both enemy and friendly AI in those games, so reducing the number of grunts would probably be the best way to do that.

They might have counted the same grunts twice so average makes sense for the most part
I was hoping they would take the higher of the two. I think to do it properly, they would have mod the damage they do and kill every ally not in their vehicles. Speaking of which, NPCs in the passenger seats and gunners count towards the driver’s count.

I think that a significant part of the reason that Halo: CE is my favourite is that mix of enemies. I remember playing Reach, and the hunters never quite feel like the boss fights they did in CE, the lack of grunts (to my feel) meant that there was less fighting the horde (I love CE for this - The Library is one of my favourite levels to play) and the presence of the Brutes made things feel easy in the face of the more challenging Elites. The grunts were a solid side-band threat in CE. They could deplete shields or stick you with a grenade if you weren't weary. At the same time, unlike the Jackles, they never felt like bullet sponges. They never felt like a nuisance that impeded the flow of the game. I find it interesting how the Jackles and Grunts are employed very differently. When you're rescuing folks in the level "Halo" at the beginning, the Jackles apply pressure, but the Grunts generate the threat space and flank more readily.
Reach hunters are way more challenging than CE hunters which can literally die in one shot to a pistol on any difficulty so idk ehst you're talking about - ___ -

There’s also the fact that the variety of enemies occasionally change with power to higher difficulties.

I feel like the numbers directly correlate with the introduction of new enemy types, some might go higher than 2 or 3 but not CE. CE didn't have the same number of enemy types/variants as later games, resulting in grunts being the only true cannon fodder enemy type in the game (popcorn flood are more weapon than enemy).

One small factor I just considered if anyone else wants to try this even more thoroughly in the future is not using grenades/trying to stop your allies from doing so. There are many areas were grunts can simply just be blown off the map in the OG trilogy. Also if there was a way to get theater in 1/2 you could simply just go to theater mode for each game and use that to make the counts even more accurate. Because if you can count them as soon as they spawn in while freezing the in game world you could avoid missing any of the grunts

Lmao funnily enough I once did this with Halo ce-4's amount of hunters since with each passing game in the trilogy I noticed how there were less and less. Turns out Halo ce had the most hunters out of all at the time

It's a surprise that they weren't starting to die out in the end of it all, what with possible sterility being caused by too much PTSD and other crud received by the Grunts.
By the way, on The Silent Cartographer, you can just go to the locking mechanism area first and then reach the locking door area after. Gives you additional dialogue too.

This was great! If you continue this maybe consider adding different metrics to normalize the data. Maybe something like average _____ encountered per minute (could be playtime or par time) or something like that, just a lil extra to compare levels against eachother, still love this as is
