There's reason why I keep watching your videos. For whatever reason I never felt compelled to visit this park even though I've passed by it a few times, but now that I've seen your video on it I'll definitely make a trip to the park. Visuals are indeed more powerful than words and I have your channel to thank for making me go to new places.
I remember traveling every year back to Oklahoma and back to California over route 66 when it was two lanes. This was back in the 50's and 60's. We pick up petrified wood on every trip. Every one did the same thing. There was petrified wood laying everywhere you looked. I was a kid then now I am 70 years old. It looks much different today than it did back then. Thanks for the memories.
Your story is like mine, back in the 50's my family moved from Atlanta Ga to the SF Bay Area and we traveled almost every year on vacation back to Atlanta Ga taking Route 66 going thru AZ, NM, TX,OK,MS,AL, we would stop at Hoover Dam, Painted Desert pick up petrified wood, I remember one time went to Painted Desert at Sun rise and oh man the colors were amazing, I called our move from Atlanta to Calif, The Grapes of Wrath, I am also in my mid 70's. Later in life I was able to take my family on the same trip in the early 80's we did that a few times yes now older taking a look back at life, Thank you Robert for your time and travel back to my past, be safe on the road and be at peace....
@Chips2323 It is interesting you mention the grapes of wrath. My dad was raised on a 80 acre ranch. My cousins were living on that ranch. My father worked in the Richmond ship yards during ww2. Then he started a ranch of 60 acres. When there wasn't anything but tumble heads and rattlesnakes. I know because I grew up on that ranch. My mom and dad both missed their relatives very much. Thus the trip every year like clockwork. Route 66 when it was two lane I can remember mom driving and stuck behind 10 to 20 cars and not being able to pass. My mom and dad never stayed at a motel. They would always drive straight through. I can still remember my dad singing some Marty Robbins songs when he was tired from driving. Interesting times and precious memories that only live in our mind.
@@dalehutchings6350 LOL, Ya my Dad drove straight thru from Calif to Atlanta non-stop ya there times of short breaks, Mom always had Fried Chicken and sandwiches, ya no Motels stay ya with 4 kids Mom and Dad, but i look back on those times they are memories I have for a life time.
This park has more to it than one thinks. Knowing how old these logs are and that wood became stone is amazing
Glad you enjoyed your visit there, Robert. Some people drive through and think "meh....." but I love it. I live near this park. If anyone is planning a visit, spend a little extra time taking one of their "backcountry" hikes. These do not have trails, but there are free guides you can borrow from any of the visitor centers (i.e. "park at milepost 23....head towards THIS peak (photo), take the right fork at the next wash...." sort of thing. You can get into the backcountry to see some absolutely amazing pieces of petrified wood, petroglyphs, relics like fossilized clam beds, and more. The scenery is outstanding, you wouldn't believe the difference between driving the main road and getting into the backcountry. We've done so many hikes in that National Park, it's just a treasure. The Painted Desert Inn was largely constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps, the history of that building is fascinating.
I can only do small hikes but it does look amazing. I passed through in 2020 on my way up to Zion and saw what I guess is the end of the park..I didn't even know smdh...now I HAVE to go back to really check all this out! I will keep in mind what you said here and if I'm in better shape I may just do that...I'd love to see some things that others don't...I'm a creator too and photographer so I'm itchin' to get back there!

To enjoy these two locations, you really have to appreciate the view back in time you are experiencing. This isn't just a bunch of interesting terrain and pertrifide wood. It's the remains of a cataclysmic event, where the evidence has not been lost to time. One of the most underrated parks, in my opinion. Well managed as well. Thanks, Robert! Happy trails.
Yet another National Park I am not familiar with. Thank you for stopping and exploring these lesser known jewels of the desert. Just imagine what you’ll find by owning property out there! You know, sometimes the landscape doesn’t have to be so terribly grand in order to bring a smile to one’s face. This was beautiful. Discovering places like the Petrified Forest in person are what make the fires of curious travel keep burning!🔥
I Do believe, and I’m sure you agree, there is a striking resemblance to both the badlands of North and South Dakota, as well as the Painted Hills in Oregon. I always save a slice of my time for watching your content, as it never fails to pay off in spades. A great example of that right here. Thanks again for encouraging the joy of travel!

Thx for this nice look back to our trip in June 22. We visited Petrified Forrest on our Trip on entire 66, it was much to hot to have a little hike, temperature in the high 90s! So we missed the old „trees“ and we were honestly disappointed and went on to Holbrook. Now you‘ve us shown more and we look back a little reconciled with this park. 😊😍

Hello Traveling Robert. I have also visited Petrified Forest National Park. I still remember that beautiful place. Thanks Traveling Robert. Pelecamp West...I'm looking forward seeing that.
This brings back memories! I have a vague memory of going there when I was a young boy in the (early to mid) 60s - I've got a polished piece of petrified wood that we bought in the gift shop. I also visited years later (around 1987) when I helped my grandpa move to California. It is all you described and when I was there, the silence was awesome - you could hear the breeze a bit, and occasionally a bird or insect, but that was about it (after getting away from I-40 and the railroad). Did you see the ancient shelter/house made out of petrified wood? I found it to be a peaceful, comfortable place to visit and hope to return.
There are petroglyphs to be found in other areas of the park - I did some wandering and found some well away from the main area. I also spotted a lot of pottery (sherds) where I'd walked. (You don't disturb them!)
I'm not sure how the park rules are today - I know they want people to pretty much stick to the walkways. I highly recommend this park too!

To think back in 2020 I passed through near here and I missed it, but maybe it wasn't even open at that time...that trail down into the "blue badland" area is absolutely stunning! I'm gonna have to get into better shape to make that incline though...I am DETERMINED to go back to that area and make that hike! I HAVE to take photos/video of that and be immersed in it! Thanks for showing us that trail! Another great one Robert, thank you 💜
Robert, when the sun starts to set that's when it comes alive. the colors truly show up and they will amaze you. I've only been there once, but My wife has never seen it so it's a MUST DO for her and for me once again. I can't get enough of the it. For everyone else, make the trip it's well worth it.

Mornin' Robert, happy Sunday! Wow, you certainly had a nice day for your visit. I always seem to drive the park coming from the other direction, so it's interesting to get a bit of a different perspective. I wish the park was open earlier/later so you could get a chance to see the colors pop during the golden hour. At 26:20, the Rainbow Forest Lodge/gift shop is on the left -- they used to have a fully working soda fountain there where they made "real" chocolate malts (none of that soft-serve stuff 🙂)...so delicious on a hot day!
The park might not be "top tier", but it's a must-see in my book, as much a classic Route 66 stop as anywhere in Arizona. You're simply not going to see that much petrified wood "in situ" anywhere else in the USA. And as you've shown, there are amazing vistas around every bend of the park road. Very interesting place to visit. You are right the colors look more dramatic early or later in the day. I remember seeing signs warning visitors about Hantavirus, something rare in the area.

It's interesting how the petroglyphs look similar there to the ones we saw in Utah. They had those triangular shaped torso people who looked like aliens in both places. And those horned sheep/goats looked similar too. I agree about Blue Mesa - I wasn't seeing blue either. Thanks for the views in all directions.

Be there in 9 days. This is really good. I was checking the parking as you parked. Be going through in trailer about your size. I may have to do this again on return trip. Getting camping spot isn't easy for me. KOA nope not doing it. Good Sam got that. All I need is well nothing really on return trip and hope it's not going to have hot spell. There was one petroglyph at 11:09 that looked like a stork delivering a baby. Goodness, that old wives tale has been going on for ages. lol Also some of those "rocks" had really smooth flat surfaces and corners, they looked man-made, but not necessarily nature-made. If someone was going to play a video/show drinking game where they took a chug every time you mentioned a train, everyone would be totally drunk. I think, I don't drink - but I've known of people playing that game with certain tv shows. LOL.
Made it to the parking lot of this park and decided not to go. No idea it had all that or i definitely would havs gone in. Very pretty.

I am so glad that Traveling Robert decided to not go any further into Mexico during this trip after what just happened to the Aussie Surfers. I know Traveling Robert was saying that He was considering going into that exact isolated region of Baja. I just learned that the Aussies were killed by people trying to steal tires off their rig.

It's a little bit of a power hog, and it tends to freeze whatever you put in the back. Other than that... It works well.
Still think them logs where put there. Extraterrestrials maybe, the pictographs are a clue lol.
How much was the permit to film? Was it a painful process?
All that wood looks like it had been cut for firewood. So someone had to have done that - so whenever this had happened people were on the earth and were using fire because that wood had been sliced.
