Thanks for coming back to VoicePlay so quickly! If you are a fan of Tolkien's Middle Earth, Geoff has done three songs, "Far Over the Misty Mountains Cold," "I See Fire," and this month released "Song of Durin." Geoff's channel isn't a cappella (he saves that for VoicePlay), but all of the layered vocals and instrumentation are his. It's impressive. Most of the work on his solo channel is done by Geoff and his wife, Kathy. Geoff has a 5-octave range (3-octaves in chest voice) that you get to hear more of in his solo work. With VoicePlay, Geoff mostly but not always stays in the bass range. I agree that VoicePlay isn't known as well as they should be. However, they did announce on their socials this week that they are being considered for 2025 Grammy nomination in two categories for their July upload. So, perhaps they will become better known and get the recognition that they deserve for all of their hard work. We can hope.
I love seeing you exploring their music! They are all incredible musicians, and people are often drawn especially to Geoff, the bass. I think you'd enjoy his work on his solo channel as well! Also, as Huldra mentioned, VoicePlay (and Geoff also) are really good at putting the credits for their music in their description for the video. You may also enjoy the video Home Free and VoicePlay did together - Zombies vs. Hillbillies - Survivor *edit - I typed this before I finished watching the video, lol
It's true these groups don't get the recognition they deserve. They're so talented. VoicePlay recently did a Michael Jackson cover of "The Way You Make Me Feel" featuring DJ Young and it's just been nominated for a Grammy. It's smooth and amazing. ❤ I'm really enjoying your reactions to these guys!
L to R in this video: Layne is the beatboxer. J.None is the baritone. Geoff is the bass. Earl is the high tenor. Eli is the tenor. VoicePlay has had some lineup changes over the years, and two of the people in this video are no longer members. But Geoff, Layne and Eli are the 3 you will find in every video. VoicePlay aren't mainstream, but they do manage to have this as their full time job, so they're doing quite well 🙂 They have been valuing their art over going mainstream, so instead of turning the control over to record labels and music producers, they stayed independent and do everything themselves, and keep full creative control over their art. and that makes them more interesting as artists to me, because they take risks that not all artists dare take. (also, if you want a reminder of the names before you do a video, in the description of their videos they usually have all members listed that are in that particular video)
one of the things that i love most about this arrangement is also one of the most overlooked. in the beginning, after Geoff's opening solo, when the higher voices come in, Geoff is STILL SINGING. when he goes in his upper register, he can blend in with the others so well, you don't even notice until he drops back down again.
I like to think that the visual in this video looks something like: "The 5 Kings of A Capella, sitting on their thrones"... Except they ran out of nice chairs, and poor Eli (pronounced 'Eh-lee') got stuck sitting on the piano stool. 🤣 Geoff is the one sitting in the middle, with the ultra-bass voice. If you like Simon and Garfunkle, he (Geoff) has his own version of "Sound of Silence" on his solo channel (not strictly acapella though, he saves that for Voiceplay projects). Oh! The group (in its latest incarnation) has just been nominated for a Grammy for one of their most recent videos (last month, I think?), which was an acapella arrangement of Michael Jackson's "The Way You Make Me Feel". 🥳😁
I enjoyed your two reactions to Voice Play- thanks! I am a new subscriber now to your channel looking forward to more Voice Play reactions. Voice Play is different as Huldra Draco explained- they are completely independent of a record label or contract by choice and do all of their own production. Their beatboxer, Layne Stein, and former baritone singer Tony Wakim (you saw and heard Tony in your last Voice Play video) own the studio (PattyCake Productions) that they film most of their videos from. In recent years since the pandemic, they have stopped touring and all of them put so much into the production of their videos. They are very theatrical with a lot of attention given to character development, acting, costuming, makeup and all that you would see in the theater production of a show. They are the kings of anything Halloween themed so you may want to check out their Halloween playlist now that we are into the spooky season. They also continue to do the raw production that you enjoy in the form of 'minis' or shorts on their channel and bass singer, Geoff Castellucci (the man in the middle here) has his own solo channel. Keep an eye out for Voice Play's newest that hopefully will be released to the public this coming Friday- it is epic!
Spooky season is upon us, and VoicePlay are THE kings of Halloween (and occasionally queens, depending on who the featured artist is in the cover) so I highly recommend you check out their Halloween covers. Geoff Castellucci, that amazing bass singer you’re fascinated by, has his own solo channel as well, and this is his favorite holiday so he’s got some fantastic low bass singer covers of Halloween songs and spooky stories he’s narrated. My personal Halloween favorite of his is Jack’s Lament (from The Nightmare Before Christmas, which he released last October)
Their most recent is Be Prepared from The Lion King. The featured artist is Mykal (Michae) Kilgore, the original first tenor with the group in 1997. Be prepared is very Geoff-centric, so Mykal will be back soon in a piece more suited to his range. If you'd like to see another classic piece from this time period, try their version of Can't Help Falling in Love. Subscribed.
From your left: Layne Stein (beatboxer, baritone, violinist), J None (currently in the US Navy), Geoff Castellucci (bass from A0 on piano to 5 octaves above), Earl Elkins (high tenor, no longer with the group), Eli Jacobson (like jelly, high tenor and rock tenor). Little Mermaid, We're Good, Sleeping in the Cold Below, Drunken Sailor.
A haunting song stripped down to a play on voices. The more singing voices there are, the better the song without instruments, but even if there is just one good singing voice, a cover can be as good as the original. I'm thinking of you, Luke.
I think more people might know Pentatonix (total respect to them and all they do) because they're publicized so much, but I feel they're more restricted in what they can do. While Voiceplay can take more risks. Thanks for your reaction. Looking forward to the next one.

I'm a big fan and patron of both VoicePlay and Geoff. Their theatrical videos are my favorite.

Geoff also arranged this. Talk about talent, right? 😊
