His Yiddish scat kills me every time. Reminds me of Passovers as a kid when my grandma would have a little too much Manischewitz and she’d ask someone to pass the kugel
I saw Mel at Saratoga in the early 80's. Weather Report was there, Dizzy, more greats than you could count. Mel STOLE, STOLE the show. Sat on the edge of the stage. Jumping multiple octaves with tone and feeling and control that left us just slack. Standing O for a good 5 minutes. The kids who came for Weather Report left lifelong Mel fans.
@@rreettyyuull he definitely could keep up, but Ella just never really ran out of chords & had a ridiculous ear when it came to innovative sounds u only hear with instruments.
@@rreettyyuull Yes he was. There is a toe to toe with her explainin what jazz is. Beside he was multinstrumentist, he was more on point being also a drummer.
Mel was the very best male scat singer, in any language ..his Yiddish scat was great.. May you reside alongside Ella/Sammy and of course all of them ..in tranquillity and melodic harmony ...Harvey Perkoff
My popular music mentality made no room for the Golden Fog in his day. I missed out on so much then. Thank you for keeping this alive. It's never too late to appreciate.
Quel plaisir de vous écouter Monsieur Mel Tormé... quelle joie ! quel bonheur ! Merci d'être venu et de nous avoir laissé ces magnifiques enregistrements... Bien que parti vous êtes toujours là. :-)
Watching this in 2016. Mel was the only one who could keep up with Ella, when it came to scatting. Such a talented, gifted singer. God bless Velvet Fog. I love to hear your voice all these years later. This is when Musical Gods walked the earth. :')
damn...you would think he plays trumpet or sax lol his scatting is so awesome sounds exactly like one of those instruments would solo. seriously this guy is way more talented than any of the rat pack singers and any other big band singer I heard lol
.. Well, as he himself says, Ell Fitzgerald is the tops .. But he had some good scat battles with UK's top lady of jazz singing Cleo Laine, and I think anyone hearing would agree it was a tie .. also in many aspect of their singing, they were match for match.
My buddy sends me this in a link. At least he was in a good mood when he sent it. It would have been a different kind of scat if you know what I'm saying were it a bad mood. Harry from Night Court would be proud. And Bull too.
There were only 2 GREAT scat singers ever. Ella Fitzgerald was one and the other one is right on this clip. Everyone else who ever tried was only a pale imitation of them. Mel just got better and better as the years rolled on. Once he signed with Concord Records he could do no wrong. Just choose anything he recorded for that label to sample the man's greatness. He is probably my single most favorite singer, and this clip illustrates why.
This embodies jazz. It's both a tribute to someone who he respects, while also being a lil bit selfish and taking the spotlight for himself. I frickin love it, it's like improving with someone cuz you have to listen and respect the other person, while also being kind of selfish sometimes.
Mel was like the male version of Ella
No Louis Armstrong
That was CRAZY!! He's got to be one of the best vocalist I've ever heard!!
His Yiddish scat kills me every time. Reminds me of Passovers as a kid when my grandma would have a little too much Manischewitz and she’d ask someone to pass the kugel
He's scatting in tongues.. haha. He's so good. Love his Yiddish scat too.

Really?
Without doubt one of the greatest male Jazz Vocalists in history. His scat singing was on the same level with Ella.
Hell no..... . He was good but nowhere near ella lmaao

He went off. He is one of favorites
Still watching this in 2020
And it's better than any garbage that was made in the year 2020.
My popular music mentality made no room for the Golden Fog in his day. I missed out on so much then. Thank you for keeping this alive. It's never too late to appreciate.
I always love Mel on Night Court!
Quel plaisir de vous écouter Monsieur Mel Tormé... quelle joie ! quel bonheur ! Merci d'être venu et de nous avoir laissé ces magnifiques enregistrements... Bien que parti vous êtes toujours là. :-)
Mel Torme and my grandad used to be friends. They both enjoyed and shared the same hobby.
THIS GUY IS FICKING GENIUS
He really is. Won't see his likes again for quite some time IF ever.
if Ella is considered the finest scat singer , Mr. Torme must not be very far behind.
+Tom Kelly Not only that, Mr Torme was multi- talented ( musician : drummer, pianist... arranger, composer )
Nope, Scatman John is the fastest scat singer.
Lmao yall will never give us our roses.........so sad
@@mr.marino9247 And a crack shot with a pistol.
@@KanalvogtSG Scatman was fastest but always the same phrasing haha not that talented but funny.
Guard this clip with your lives!!!!!
Pardon me as I take my jaw off the floor! 🤯
Mel Torme is the Godfather of Scat.
Watching this in 2016. Mel was the only one who could keep up with Ella, when it came to scatting. Such a talented, gifted singer. God bless Velvet Fog. I love to hear your voice all these years later. This is when Musical Gods walked the earth. :')
don't forget the great embassador of jazz Mr. Louis Armstrong. His scat was something special too
+Ray Rhythm Louis Armstrong.....Ohhhhhhhh yeaaaaah.
And the recently late Al Jarreau's version of Take Five is a scat marvel as well.
Incredible singer and performer!
4:05 "🎵🎶 If I were a rich m.....🎵🎶 What the Hell am I doing?!"
This cracks me up 🤣😂😅
Pretty sure that Mel and Ella were soul makes in a past life.
The didn't call him The Velvet Fog for nothing!
This dude was music... RIP.
Mel Torme is a beast.
Scatman John is a machine gun. He scats as fast as the shooting of a machine gun.
The Greatest singer ever! ;)
1:27 - 1:35 is one of my favorite part from this clip. This shows that Giants did once roam the earth.
damn...you would think he plays trumpet or sax lol his scatting is so awesome sounds exactly like one of those instruments would solo. seriously this guy is way more talented than any of the rat pack singers and any other big band singer I heard lol
nezkeys79 I would say him and sammy are on the same level but definitely ahead of franky and dean
He was a drummer actually 😀
Love the Israeli scat towards the end. Great show man :-)
Великий партнер Эллы в стиле Скэт ❤

Un scat exceptionnel 👌🏽
Hi was totally incredible!
Great Mel Torme!
Mel is the best! Thanks for posting!
@TheRestlesswind He makes it look easy. He is probably the greatest living white scat singer of all time. Nobody even comes close.
.. Well, as he himself says, Ell Fitzgerald is the tops .. But he had some good scat battles with UK's top lady of jazz singing Cleo Laine, and I think anyone hearing would agree it was a tie .. also in many aspect of their singing, they were match for match.
Mel Torme forever !!!!!!! Great !!!!!!!
I think Mel Torme's speaking in tongues right after the 3:00 minute mark in this video, he's speaking in tongues I swear!
Genius. thats jazz 😎
Ella, Sarah & Mel were the best to ever scat. Mel was like the male version of Ella. Ledisi and others today are putting their spin on scat.
he was just amazing :-)
Just don't google the title of this video...probably not going to get what you'd think these days!
Absolute virtuoso !

Haha, a bit of stand up comedy with music. Genius. :D
Mel was the first man of jazz scatting and singing.
Обожаю его! С любовью из России!

Sencillamente hermoso!
Shit - dem syllables made my Christmas - gonna transcribe this bad boy version for 2011. Thanks Mel, singer drummer enthuser teacher extraordinaire!
Aw, shucks! Its sort of frustrating to learn that Mel has had some scat lessons since "Strangers in the Night"... haha!
