Juan: *posts a video with an unreleased device*
Me: "I don't need sleep, I need answers"
@Sony
Please listen..
I am a fan
This phone is all camera engineering ..
People out there are not professional photographers !
Please don't make specific device for specific people ..
Make it more general pro and compete with other manufacturer ..
Other phones out there taking good enough photos too .
Not pricy and not hard to get.
Please don't go the way Vaio and Lg gone !
Please survive ...
@@M.A.H I feel you bro. So true!
I feel that Juan is the best reviewer on UA-cam when it comes to understanding and explaining all of the technical aspects of these devices, which can help us the consumers better appreciate the engineering that's gone into them. A+ dude
@Tessoro Desoto that's why you need to subscribe to his patreon channel for more in-depth reviews.
I really like how the xperia can stand on its own, literally
The only tech reviewer that's at the enthusiast level. You're taste on phones are just the same as mine and like I'm talking to myself when I watch your videos especially about sonys and LGs
Yes, Juan is the best, most useful and informative reviews on my favorite phones!
YESSSS And I love your point about how flipping cool it is that this sort of hardware just happens to come attached to an incredible pocket computer/crazy fast modem. So cool.
Like, something pros might care about right 😊
I think Sony is the only one making actually “PRO” phones
Truth.
You understand that the sensor isn't actually 1" right? Its 1/1.33 because it's only the middle of the sensor used.. that's also why the resolution isn't 20mp but 12mp..so it's far from the biggest phone camera sensor
@@stefanvasilev9320 I was curious how they measured that ...was thinking if THAT'S an inch, ive been telling ladies the wrong things about myself my entire life 😂
@@stefanvasilev9320 Indeed, this also affects the sensors performance. Like using apsc mode on a FF camera, you loose much of the advantage of the larger sensor. It's interesting to compare to a phone like the iPhone 13 pro max. The iPhone offers a lot for the average consumer but also for the professional with Apple's ProRaw (which will provide a lot more data than the Sony's raws) and soon to have ProRes video capability. Use an app like Filmic Pro and I'm not sure the Sony "professional" marketing pitch holds up as well ...
@@stefanvasilev9320 Using just 60% of the sensor and still performing better in tests. Pretty cool in my books.
I love when the photo app shows you the WHOLE viewfinder with no UI obstruction too. A pro phone where you can see your whole shot... like a PRO!!
This is way more camera I personally ever would need on a phone, but my god, do I want one 😂
RIGHT! Having it in house, I've been WANTING to shoot more cinematic LOL.
This is for people who are serious about photography. If you are a casual user who wants a quick shot with great photos, then the iPhone, Samsung, Google, and the Chinese phones are the way to go.
@@NationChosenByGod yeah.people that want the sony probably already have a camera.but this is just an addition
@@NationChosenByGod don't agree, you can also go xperia 1 or 5 iii, they have great cameras and give you the same processing as this one does only with a lesser sensor. If you like natural shots out of your phone your best bet is sony, if you want prettier looking (albeit fake) pictures other brands are more your speed
I am so in
I absolutely love you reviews of Xperia products. So unbiased and energetic.
I will be selling my Xperia 1 mark 3 for this as soon as I can get my hands on it.
"some reviewers have forgotten how headphones cable works"
This got me every single time 😂😂😂
Couldn't agree more. One even boldly claiming that "headphone jack is on the way out". I totally dying from laughter hearing such utter nonsense. 😂🤣
@@farishanafiah8461 they have alot of money to spend on wireless earphones/earbuds.Thats why they don't care about headphone jack
@@Fuad_ Sadly, quality on wired devices are better overall. Whether for sound output or input.
@@josephaquino3095 wired devices are also cheaper
@@Fuad_ Some are not cheap. Like the IEM-Z1R. But, for the same price, wired earphones are way better than wireless.
Any phone that still has a headphone jack and SD card slot is awesome to me lol.
It's silly how refreshing that is.
So glad that Sony reintrodued the jack with the mkii, otherwise I wouldn't have found a successor to my older Xperia
Wish they had replaceable battery too
Also glad u can use a lanyard hand strap too.
Watched Juan's lgv50 review, bought it, phone is awesome, great sound, display, added 1 TB sdcard, enjoying it. Thanks
I'm so glad that this isn't just another half-step refresh like I thought it would be
This is genuinely a fantastic move for smartphone camera development, and I hope that it really shows other manufacturers that the envelope can be pushed in more innovative and far more compelling ways
I genuinely hope Sony keeps this two device strategy for the Pros. Modem and Optics. A Pro-I (imaging) and a Pro-B (broadcast). They're SO good.
@@SomeGadgetGuy It would definitely be an interesting strategy, I'm not opposed to them combining the two features into one device however and making an incredibly well featured device.
Either way, I hope these devices finally bring Sony more into the main stream, like back in the Xperia Z2 days
@@SomeGadgetGuy I agree. I think they should even make a Pro PlayStation Xperia. If they are going to cover broadcasting and photography/videography then they should cover gaming too.
The only other phone that rightfully deserves the "Pro" moniker. Great job Sony, great job.
This is just a FAKE. Huge sensor that half of which is not used. Instead of making really good camera Sony decided to buy some reviewers.
@@Alex-fk3ni Can you prove its a fake? Do you own one to prove that Sony is lying about it?
@@Gabilleta Sure, no problem:
The big story is of course the 1"-type stacked CMOS sensor from the RX100 VII. However, in order to keep the phone small, Sony has designed a lens that can't project an image circle large enough to cover the entire area of the 1" sensor. That's why, instead of 20MP images, as you'd get from the RX100 VII camera, you get 12MP images. But this has a broader implication: the combination of a slower F2 lens (than many of its smartphone peers) and a sensor that's not quite as big as a 1"-type sensor means the image quality might not meet the initial expectations you might have when you think 'smartphone with RX100 sensor'. In fact, if you consider just the area used for 12MP stills, it has roughly a 12mm diagonal and 70mm2 sensor surface area: closer to the specs of a 1/1.31" sensor (such as the one in the Google Pixel 6).
DPReview
@@Alex-fk3ni That much I know already. And Sony has disclosed as such as well. It's using the sensor at a crop, yes. But unlike most of the new smartphones using bigger sensors, which the majority of them are a pixel binning sensor, they all have around the same size microns, which vary from 1.2 to 1.5 depending on the lense with a fixed aperture. This one have a 2.4 microns per pixel, meaning each pixel is 80 to 100% larger than the rest of the competition. This also have a variable aperture, much like Samsung did from the S9 series ending with their Note 10 series which helps in broad daylight as mentioned in the video.
Thanks to Sony sticking with a traditional 12mp sensor, it can offer super fast auto focus and eye tracking as the sensor doesn't have to bin the pixels to then create a 12mp image, like the S21 Ultra which uses a 108mp sensor that bins down 9 times to produce a 12mp output but with a much smaller microns per pixels than this device.
So while yes, if we look at the crop size, it's similar to other big sensors BUT because it doesn't have to bin down, it gets to benefit from bigger pixels than the rest of the competition.
@@Gabilleta As I said Sony is just lying by telling they have 1" sensor. They could put full frame sensor and use just a few percents of it. Would that be a full frame camera?
And why don't you like pixel binning?
When the official Sony FB page posted the teaser pic for this phone, I knew instantly you'll be reviewing it. BUT I DIDNT EXPECT IT TO BE SO SOOOON!!! 😍
Kudos to Sony. Credit where it's due. I really wish LG had the capacity to keep going as well. Some companies do outstanding out of box thinking, but do not get enough credit and praises.
Writing this on my V60 and how I wish I was watching a V70 review. If only!
As always, thanks for sharing!
Sigh.... What could have been...
Same. I only got my 1iii because LG is no more. :-/ I love the 1iii, I only honestly wish it actually had more MPs (20-24 ...I'm not asking for crazy 50+ numbers). My V30 only had a 16MP shooter, and even that seems a big difference to me. I understand SONY wishes to keep file sizes down, and speeds up, but 12MP is not enough.
@@AltruiSisu agreed, especially not with the approach they have taken, with little computational photography.
I'm on my v60 too! Been with LG all my phone life, don't know where to go from here HONESTLY. Any ideas?

After seeing LG drop the headphone Jack on the Velvet Pro 2?
Or get an xperia? Before it exits too?
@CGGS_Gaming there is such thing as a Velvet 2 Pro and it was basically ready to be sold to consumers and they dropped the headphone Jack on it. There are unboxing pictures on Twitter and there was one listed on Ebay so you could technically buy it.
@CGGS_Gaming if you don't believe me do a web search
@CGGS_GamingI posted a link but Juan or UA-cam deleted it
Seems like a great addition to the line up from Sony! I love my 1 III, So this is definitely great for those who want a bit more. I'm not much of a photographer myself, but I love the control these phones offer and how it's presented within the apps when I do want to take photos.
A true pro phone. Full manual control, well optimized hardware and software, and also so many features that us casual might never use.
It's kind of the point. Why call something a "pro" if it's not really for pros? 😄

Great job distilling down a nice holistic overview of a device that does SO much, with so many fun details, you could deep dive on it for an hour. Good job!
I'm really interested in some of the details referenced in the launch presentation too...sounds like the phone does some in-device photostacking to clean up noise, etc. in low light images. Is there any user control in this? Does it work in raw? A device like this starts making me ask questions about Sony building an intervalometer into the Photo Pro app, useful for time lapse or even basic astrophotography. Or making a snap cable compatible with the phone so you could use other external add on devices for camera control, like you would with a DSLR... I love that we can even start thinking about these questions ON A PHONE!
the passionate vibes about Sony makes me wanna buy this phone
This is really ballsy of Sony because at first they were clearly worried about cannibalising their own camera sales. Now they're embracing their strength and it looks like grabbing the RX100 sensor is the best way to go about it.
If they don't do it soon, soon even their camera lineup for casual to casual pro lineup is going to be gone. smartphone are replacing these line quickly
Well yeah better eat yourself than let other eat you. I mean they need to make different proposition with the small cameras anyway because smartphone in general are coming for them. I am really interested to see how this impacts their normal Xperia lineup.
Wow, that is a genuine surprise announcement from Sony. I look forward to seeing your final review when Sony release this, even though it is well above my budget
The reviewer I waited to hear from on this beast. 👍
I just read GSMArena's hands-on preview of this new Xperia and they compared the camera against the Apple iPhone 13 Pro. Let's just say that I won't be getting the iPhone, that's for sure. $1,800 does sound steep for a smartphone considering that other much cheaper rivals can create equally good photo quality, but in terms of hardware feature? This really is the king, full stop.
Even against the v70 pro+?
@@IronKore X70 Pro+ doesn't have a headphone jack or microSD card support or even HDMI ALT video output, so that's out of my list. That said, the X70 Pro+'s gimbal stabilization is worth trying out.
The "Auto, HDR, AI, Social Media Filter, JPEG mode" really got me good🤣🤣🤣
Man, I have the 1ii. I'm not a vlogger, but i love the features on this pro. It's a bit out of my price range, but it makes me excited for what Sony does on the 1iv next year. So glad that Sony seems to be reinvigorated in executing their vision and not just chasing the latest fad.

Wow. Thank you for this review. Best one I have seen and gave me so much more information. Will be ordering one of these as a dedicated content creation tool
Why SONY promoting 1.0 inch sensor when they do not use the whole sensor?
Yes inside is 1.0 inch sensor with 20MP But in use is only 12MP then active area is 1/1.33"
for 1800$
It's nice to see that Sony is a company that can afford taking such risks.
Sad time for LG dudes but this is a holy day for those who appreciate such risks taken...
Not really afford risks, but willing to do so. SONY's phones in the past two decades have done terribly. Their other sectors in their company are also doing poorly except Playstation, Audio, and some cameras. It will be interesting to see if they can make a splash in the phone market but I doubt it. Market share is dominated by Samsung and Apple
So you found a new subscriber today I really like the way you break things down. I found your channel when researching the Sony Xperia Pro I and you helped me to make my decision. I received it yesterday and am thinking of returning it for 2 reasons. 1. My at&t store tells me it is not compatible with their 5G services. (mid west USA) 2. I am a raging diabetic that uses a constant glucose monitoring system that syncs up to my galaxy phone, and the app required to do so is not available for the Xperia. The whole reason I bought the Xperia is I have been thinking about buying a DSLR and trying my hand at photography and also am in the market for a new phone and this ticks both boxes.
I like phones that are different and this certainly is one very different phone. Thanks for your excellent work.
I COMPLETELY understand that second point. These conversations are TOTALLY different when we're talking about necessary durable medical equipment vs "makes the best vids for tik tok". That's a bummer it wasn't supported, but I'm stoked you were able to take it for a test drive.
I've departed from the gorgeous v40 to the pixel 6 pro. Immensely missing the DAC life.
I can definitely understand that. That is why I'm not buying any flagship without a headphone jack, it's a complete joke. I don't mind not having a DAC since it's made for audio enthusiasts, but the headphone jack itself is still relevant and never gets outdated unlike Bluetooth.
Amazing, your thoughts and presentation was better than all the other reviewers. Clicked on that bell, can't believe your video didn't come up until now even though I was already subscribed. This is the next phone I want, coming back to Sony after many years
Gotta admit why some of the reviewers doesn't appreciate Sony chooses 12MP instead of high MP to focus on autofocus and speed. I have a Xperia 5 ii and the autofocus is just gorgeous and easy to use. Hope Sony keep making phones like this so Juan can review and sales will go boom!!
Oh my god. Georgeous. BUT: It is still a phone. this camera might be amamazing, absolutely amazing for a phone, but I would rather keep shooting with my old A6300 where I have the ability to switch lenses! And that is my big contra about pretty much any smartphone camera. You´re stuck with these ultra wide angle lenses (e.g. my Xiaomi Pocophone F1 has a 3.94mm lense (1/2.55" and 26 mm focal lenth; equivalent to full frame)) which might be great for wide angle architecture or indoor photos or close up (but it sucks at macro) but as soon as I want to capture anything in a certain distance I´d rather grab my Sony A6300 with SEL 16-50 or SEL55-210mm.
I think something like this for me would make more sense than having a standalone camera for the most part.
And that price isn't as high as I expected...
You had me at headphone jack.
It's those things that don't show up on spec sheets, how it feels to hold the device, how it reacts with attachments and what the general feel of it is. Thank you for pointing out things that most of us can only speculate.
I appreciate Sony's focus (get it??), but as a camera investment, it just doesn't make sense. If I can get the same technology from Sony for $1200 and it'll be good for at least ten years, why would I pay $1800 for that in a phone that's going to be falling behind in security updates within two years? It's just too much money for the relatively minor convenience of having one device. I'd rather have a serviceable cameraphone for $600 that I carry for a couple of years before replacing, and spend the other $1200 on great camera hardware with more longevity.
That's the biggest gripe of buying a Sony phone. Everything looks nice and all but the advantages of it having this sensor on a phone have way more disadvantages when you remember that Sony tends to launch hardware and then forget it exists. It's actually kinda cute how Juan expects more cases and grips when Sony can't even support the software and their phones are being sold in like 4 places all around the world.
I hope my 1mkii gets that basic mode and that new video mode as well in an update, Sony is interesting and I hope they stay in the smart phone business
Sony never left us 🔥. I'm so happy everytime i saw sony phones. Its my first ever smartphone. Hopefully they don't go into LG route
That's THE phone today that deserve to be called a Pro. Hardware, software and design. Design that is tradicional, remember my 80s sound system!
For me the only one thing that will make this phone perfect is a dex mode. Then it will literally replace everything.
Ugh I hope Google improves desktop mode in Android 12...
@@SomeGadgetGuy Sony phones do support the built-in desktop mode, right? Is it usable or to basic? LG's Screen+ works fine for me.
Will it heat up (in video) that it shuts down the camera app? I love this :)

Seems nice, but the Xperia Pro still seems more compelling with a dedicated HDMI (albeit micro HDMI), which is separate from the USB-C port.
Thanks Juan. It's great to see Sony go it's own way in phone development, and not settle for doing The Same thing everyone else does. Pro i looks like a great phone+camera and i really Want IT.

Sony builds the BEST Pixelbinning Sensor on the Market. The IMX800. This would be the better choice for this Phone.
Maybe a bit slower AF but more Detail, more Resolution, more usable Sensor size, more flexibility with 12MP AND 50 MP.

Was gonna get an Xperia 1 III for Christmas...guess I'm getting this instead! Well done Sony!
That intro was perfect lol
Not For Noob photography. this really in a pro level
I keep rewatching this. And man the camera interface options are just so nice. I know some people like having it all in one place but I honestly wouldn't just mind a quick switch toggle inside each apple that cycles you to the other app.
I think Sony COULD use that mode dial in the corner to keep ALL the apps accessible.
The Sony Xperia PRO-I appears to be a wonderful solution for a lot of people who travel unfortunately will never see this product in Canada as the last series of Xperia phones that Sony created were never delivered. It really sums up what vaporware is all about.
I would really love to get this phone and the funny part is I'm not even a camera person. But all because you have one I want one 🤣🤣🤣

Excellent video!
With this phone being release.. I Think.... The dedicated / standalone camera hardware is gonna got improved / upgrade In upcoming new camera models.
I actually love that camera design. Very very simple.
one of the problems of smartphone video is the variable frame rate, while it's no problem if you edit on phone and recording audio to the phone, it can problematic if you want to use it in dual record setup with separate audio recorder, is it finally solved in xperia pro i?
I really love the PRO-I it takes really nice pictures. The ribbed sides of the this phone is like the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX0 II. I think Sony trying to make it look more like a camra then a phone.
The definitely are and I'm here for it!
Man, this phone looks like so much fun
What a couple of weeks for you! First the Vivo, then the Pixels and now the Sony unpronounceable. It looks seriously good just from your enthusiasm
Seems excellent. Really hope it live up to expectations. No point having super huge sensor but the picture quality only able to achieve nice picture after fiddle around the setting until miss the moment. It should be able to capture very very good picture in point and shoot mode and excellence when the user fiddle and optimize the settings.
Every 200 euro phone has manual mod with the same settings, and Sony's 1inch sensor isn't 1inch it's 1/1.33 because it doesn't use the whole sensor just the center(so technically there are mid rangers with bigger senors) so it's a marketing trick, and paying 1800 dollars...well that's isn't going to happen
Brb gotta go pick my jaw up off the floor
I wish it was light both in weight and Price😉
Any idea if the Xperia Pro-1 has Product Showcase like the ZV-1? Would love to see that on a Sony smartphone.
Wish I had the cash for this phone or I wish T-Mobile, Verizon and or At&t carried it so I could finance it. It literally checks almost all the things I want in a phone and miss. Phone manufacturers used to have them. They used to have expandable storage, dedicated hardware camera buttons and headphone jacks. I wish they still incorporated ir blasters. Oh well. I so want this phone.
Man, the image quality is incredible!
I would take the 1 MK III over the Pro-I because the III would serve my needs better and cost less. But wow, this is a great phone.
