  • Dr. Francis Tumblety is one of the few Jack the Ripper suspects who was actually arrested in connection with the Whitechapel murders in the autumn of 1888.
In this video, which is presented in connection with author and Tumblety expert Michael L. Hawley, we trace his life from his birth in Ireland in 1833, through to his fledgling career as an "Indian herb doctor" - in which pursuit he was extremely successful and, as a result became very wealthy - and on to England where, throughout the 1870s, his name appeared regularly in the newspapers.
Having looked at his career in England, we assess his character, taking an in depth look at some of the controversies he was involved in, first in Liverpool and then in Birmingham.
The story then follows him into the autumn of 1888, when, at some stage, he managed to get himself arrested on suspicion of complicity in the Jack the Ripper atrocities.
Using his own words from various interviews that he gave in the wake of his arrest, we ponder why it was that he was suspected. We then reveal that the police, lacking any concrete evidence to prosecute him for the crimes, opted to charge him with several counts of gross indecency.
He was bailed to appear at the Central Criminal Court (the Old Bailey) in December, 1888, but he skipped bail and fled to America, by way of France.
Here, his arrest was widely reported in the American newspapers. albeit the British newspapers remained strangely silent about his arrest.
Police officers of the NYPD kept him under surveillance during his time in New York, and it was reported that several English detectives had followed him across the Atlantic, supposedly, so the press claimed, in connection with his being Jack the Ripper.
We assess the case both for and against him, and reveal how, having faded from memory as a suspect, interest in him was re-ignited when a letter, written by a retired Scotland Yard detective, Chief Inspector John Littlechild, named him as a likely suspect.
Having discussed his viability as a suspect, we follow him through his latter years until his death at St John's Hospital St. Louis, in May 1903.
The video presents an in depth biography of, and a detailed analysis of one of the most eccentric suspects ever to be linked with the Whitechapel murders.

One thing I’m convinced of is the ripper had masterful knowledge of the Whitechapel area. I don’t think it was an American who had only had brief experience of it. He’s worth looking into though.

No one would’ve had a more thorough knowledge of the Whitechapel area as well as being able to move about completely unsuspected than a homicidal prostitute. Fights over customers and preferred areas were common among the prostitutes in that time.

Because he was. Over 46 sworn testimonies and depositions of Tumblety in the last 20 years of his life were in agreement that he spent his evenings in the slums of every city he went to dressed down life a homeless person walking in the darkest parts of the street. At no time did ANY eyewitnesses say he walked the evenings showing off a gigantic mustache. All stated that he waxed it pitch black and it was not gigantic.

Here is another historical tid-bit about Tumblety. It’s always a pleasure to take part of your immense knowledge about the case Mr. Jones, but this was extraordinarily interesting. It was also wonderful to hear Mr. Harley’s expertise regarding this particular suspect. I learned quite a few new things tonight.
I often read claims that The Ripper was a sadistic killer, but was he though?
The Ripper, to my knowledge, never tortured his victims, but rather killed them quite swiftly and only desecrated the bodies post mortem. Sadism is defined as the infliction of suffering for sexual gratification. A sadist will inflict pain on someone in order to see a terrified victim’s reaction. Tormenting a victim is a way for sadists to bolster their egos and self worth. Having complete control over a helpless person makes them God-like in their own twisted worlds.
But did the Ripper really do any of that?
He seemed to have done his deeds very quickly, mainly in the dark, and at least with no apparent sexual gratification. The only exception possibly being the Mary Kelly murder, of which we know far to little about to say anything for certain. George Bagster Phillips believed that Kelly had been killed by a slash to the throat and the mutilations were performed afterward. Is that the actions by a sadistic killer? He had her indoors, by himself, and Phillips suggested that the extensive mutilations would have taken two hours to perform. Yet he didn’t keep her alive, though he could have. From my point of view all this suggests that he had an ulterior motive rather than sadism.

The sadism part is so interesting. With Mary Kelly, it looks incredibly primitive. Like a lion kills its prey. It almost seems as though the killer has these animal instincts mixed with the complexities of human desire to kill. It really is very strange.

Of course that could be the case.
The police, the people and not to mention the newspapers were all seeking for a monster that would stand out in a crowd. What we know today is that serial killers usually don’t. Especially successful serial killers. They are more likely to be quite ordinary people and more often unconspicuous than the obvious psychopathic monsters people want them to be.
One thing that really speaks for that the Ripper was a local, quite anonymous, resident rather than the Hollywood caricature with the top hat, cape and a doctor’s bag, is the Whitechapel murderers evident local knowledge. He knew the streets, the alleys, the backyards, the passage ways and the shortcuts. He knew every nook and cranny of Whitechapel. There’s very little doubt in my mind he was born and raised there. And he may very well have been someone who never appeared in any of the police reports and never was mentioned at any of the inquests.

Very interesting indeed, I learned new details about Dr. Tumblety watching this video.
One thing was not mentioned is the fact that THE FROM HELL LETTER (probably the only ripper letter thought to be written by the killer) showed signs of being written by an Irish person, Dr. Tumblety was originally Irish...
but I still think Kosminski is the ripper.
Dr. Tumblety was in his 40's when the murders occurred and the physical description does not match. The Ripper was described as a man in his late 20's, not 6 feet tall and no american accent, let alone the big mustache.
Kosminski fits the profile not just cause of his mental disease (was guided by voices) attacked his sister with a knife, was named by 2 of the top police Chiefs at the time as the killer, Martin Fido came up with "Aaron".
Also, Aaron Kosminski was "trained as a barber" according to his hospital admission records, barbers at the time were surgeons, remove teeth and did minor surgery; knew basic anatomy.
    Great video Mr Jones.
May I recommend you prepare a video on GEORGE HUTCHINSON? he is very suspicious to me, was probably the lookout in the ripper murders. Thanks.

Tumblety was a Headliner, JTR is a headliner. Tumblety said, he did it for science, a great medical reform. He called them animals. "She brings on a crisis by stools, vomiting, sweat, urine, expectoration, ect. which for the most part ends in the restoration of healthy action. ...Here, then, the judicious, the moral, the humane physician should stop. But the ADVENTUROUS physician goes on and substitutes presumtion for knowledge.....Almost the last words that Senator Plumb uttered were to his landlady, who asked him what was the result of his consultation with his physician. He replied characteristically, "I have got to throw up the sponge." He meant that he had to stop work and he did not know that so soon he would have to stop altogether. ..It has been said that the man without the capacity of wonder resembles a dull pair of specticles behind which there are no eyes...These unjust and infamous, amazing in there frequency and absolute lack of foundation, have almost deprived me of the wonder capacity." Francis Tumblety. Further note, why did his file disappear?

He would have most certainly been the center of attention.
I think most of what is said about him seems quite is disputed.
My theory is that the killer might have not been a mentally sick lunatic or even someone with hatred of women or prostitutes.
What if it was a psycopath with an extreme curiosity for the female anatomy that took advantage of underpriviledged and marginalized women, that went undiscovered because he might have been a butcher and wouldn't really be suspicious with his clothes.

I have now fully watched the video.
I would like to praise you for your contributions and the amount of effort to gather such an incredible amount of information about the life of Francis Tumblety.
He is an incredibly interesting personality for how excentric and peculiar he was.
But I can´t help but think that, just like most of the famous suspects, he was just the target of social steryotipes from back then, and his name as a suspect is overwhelmingly attached to the social and collective view over who the criminal might have been, which would vary from jewish, immigrant, royal family members and others, most of which mostly based on people´s own personal discomforts back then.
The killer was most likely an unobtrusive, unremarkable working class man, who was a butcher or at least had some peculiar interest in the act of dissecting bodies.
My unpopular opinion is that he might not have been a mysoginist or a woman hater. He was rather someone who had an incredible attachment for the female anatomy for some reason and would have prostitutes as his target for being vulnerable and a marginalized social group, so he wouldn´t have been caught.
A local who knew the area extremely well and was either on his way to work or going back from work, therefore he had reasons to be on those areas without being suspicious.
He was probably not considered a suspect back then, and the contractions about whether he had great anatomical knowledge or not was probably because he was enhancing his ´´techniques´´, which he would learn from each murder.
Though an average man, probably relatively smart by how much he would learn from each murder, which might have been the most reseonable explanation for the variety and discrepancy on statements on regard to his skills.
Because he was a psychopath, he wouldn´t really mind doing that over and over again.
The carman Charles Lechmere is someone that is extremely suspicious to me, which I consider to be the prime suspect.
I have other theories based on different interpretations of the killer by reading through the killings and making assumptions, and also giving credit to Anderson and Swanson´s claims, but the most coeherent for me is the one I mention above.
Anyway, I absolutely respect your research and, even though I disagree with the view over Tumblety, I did enjoy the whole way through the video, which was remarkably well elaborated.

The police must have had some concern over him if they were watching him and also for arresting him several times. Such a shame that there is not much information now. The dossier if it were to be found would make for a very interesting read wouldn't it. He obviously didn't care for women but is that enough to think he could have been Jack The Ripper. But in my opinion when you look into it he's the first one you can discount . I believe the only one that really did see the Ripper was Evelin Long. She said he was dark , a foreigner , she also said he was a little taller than Chapman . She was 5"2 . I don't believe you can fit Francis Tumblety into that box. @@JackTheRipperTours great video, I always favoured Tumbelty as a suspect up until I did research on an unrelated topic. I have since been of the opinion these brutal murders MAY have been perpetrated by a gang known as the monkey parade gang, who were known to be brutal and pretty much ran the streets of Whitechapel at night. They had control over some prostitution and I think these horrific killings were warnings. In fact more than a few of (the ladies of the night) claimed to know who the killer was but stayed silent out of fear, in fact Eddowes came back from a hop picking holiday to say she was going to “claim the reward money for Jack the Ripper” maybe this got back to the gang? And there is also some evidence the gang had connections with the local tenant housing some of these ladies would stay in. I have a lot more that points on the possibility it could have been some of the members of this gang (something many bobbies on the beat thought at the time to). But I don’t want to just real off a massively huge comment. But I would be interested in somebody like yourself doing research on this possibility as you are very good at research and unlike many people in this field seem to keep an open mind.

Thank you very much for your thorough investigation into Dr Tumblety. I enjoyed watching it very much :) My thoughts on whether he was Jack the Ripper or not. I have come to the conclusion that he was not Jack the Ripper. Although he demonstrated certain attributes that certainly made him a definite person of interest/or suspect for the police. There was one, very important, key ingredient that he did not possess. Dr Tumblety was not a trained surgeon, he did not have the precise surgical skills required to be Jack the Ripper. It was stated, based on the autopsies performed on the victims. That whoever Jack the Ripper was, he would have to possess the skills of someone who had a trained eye for anatomy, and advanced surgical skills. Dr Tumblety was nothing more than a con-artist, Quack doctor who was out to make money. None of the Whitechapel murders would have resulted in him making money. Besides, he had travelled back and forth previously to London and nearby areas with no such murders like these occurring. I don't see why he would suddenly just start in 1888 and then just suddenly stop. It makes no sense. A person who kills like Jack the Ripper did, wouldn't just stop. They keep killing until they are caught or die. And based on forensic analysis of serial killers. Homosexual serial killers normally kill men, not women. However there is one very important suspect that the police unfortunately missed. A Dr H.H Holmes, America's first serial killer. He was caught and confessed to killing at least 27 people. He was hanged for murdering a young boy, who was left in his care. He poisoned him and also strangled his 2 sisters to death. H.H Holmes was a trained surgeon, he possessed the unique skills required to perform the Whitechapel murders, and also had a psychopathic skill of making his victims feel safe and comfortable with him, before ending their lives. Also, handwriting from H.H Holmes was determined as a match when compared to the handwriting of Jack the Ripper. H.H Holmes was also staying in London on business, during the time of the Whitechapel murders. The murders started when he arrived and stopped when he returned to America. H.H Holmes spent his entire life, sadly taking the lives of many innocent people. And he also had a hatred towards women, his wife had to leave him and flee after suffering severe abuse/domestic violence, by his hand. If anyone is interested in learning more. There are several documentaries on You-Tube about H.H Holmes's life and crimes. There are also other documentaries available where others suspect him of being Jack the Ripper. Again, thank you for your interesting video, about Dr Tumblety.

I've had a browse about the internet though, and can't find anything about Francis Tumblety being 'a hermaphrodite'. And if he did have syphilis, he could hardly blame female prostitutes - possessing an incredibly tiny male member.
The point about him not being unusually tall, because of his hat, was odd too. At a time when just about everyone wore hats, surely the police and witnesses would be able to judge heights? Also, his age in 1888 would have been 55, and that counts him out too.

In each major city, when there was a problem with syphilis amongst the female prostitutes, syphilis also spread throughout the young male prostitutes. Every young man who Tumblety maintained a sexual relationship later got married and had kids. Point - most the young male prostitutes had sex with both males and females. Tumblety clearly contracted syphilis from a male prostitute, but remember, women were the root cause of all disease. He not only blamed female prostitutes for the syphilis outbreak, he blamed female prostitutes for "decoying" young males into a life of heterosexuality. ...based up Tumblety's own words.

So that means he would have been very quiet. He would have had to know how to overpower the women without them screaming. Which means he had to not only be quiet, he had to do it quickly. And the alleys might have been dark, so he would have needed light to be able to fish around inside of the women to get out body organs. There would have been no need to “sneak up “ on the victims nor would the dark streets been a problem IF the perpetrator was known by the victims and lived in the area. The perpetrator would have been completely invisible to investigators if he was really a “she”.

Modern theorist say they doubt Jack was a Doctor and or a member of the upper class. What do you fine people think about that assessment?

If he was the JtR killer, why wait til he git to England? Are there reports of murders in Ontario that are similiar in nature?

That handlebar mustache of Tumblety’s would have stuck out like a sore thumb on the streets of Whitechapel, and as I recall none of the JTR witnesses described a man with a massive mustache and an American accent.

Maybe he put it in his pocket when he was killing them.

@@richardbaranowski A good point, although there is also the fact that Tumblety was in his fifties at the time of the JTR killings, The Ripper was described as a man in his twenties to his thirties by witnesses, also Tumblety was a man over six feet tall, JTR was described as being a man of average height.

The NY World reporter who interviewed Tumblety in January 1889 stated he had a British accent. I don't recall any witnesses who saw the murderer. No one did. MacNaghten even stated that NO ONE saw the murderer.

@@cha5 , again, no one saw the murders. Also, it is a misconception that Tumblety was over 6 feet tall. If you want to know how tall he was, look at this own autobiography. His height was nearly identical to Macnaghten's Michael Ostrog.

@@michaelhawley2283 Joseph Lawende, who saw a man with Cathrine Eddowes in Mitre Square 15 minutes before her death very likely saw JTR,
George Hutchenson also saw a man with Mary Kelly on the night of her death who might or might not have been the Ripper,
Israel Schwartz most certainly saw the man who killed Elizabeth Stride, Among some other possible witnesses,
What MacNaghten stated is irrelevant there and I don’t view his opinion on everything JTR related as gospel.
Witness descriptions describe a man of average height with a small mustache,
Nothing on the scale of a massive handlebar one ala Tumblety, and there is the matter of his age,
Just about all the witness descriptions of JTR describe a man who was in his twenties or thirties, younger than Tumblety at that time who would have been in his late fifties.
If you don't recall any witnesses who likely saw The Ripper you haven't looked hard enough.

I've always believed that Tumblety was Jack the Ripper bc in a UA-cam video I watched a # of years ago stated that Tumblety was staying in a boarding house close to the ripper murders & that witnesses living in the boarding house would see him coming back to his room during each of the murders covered in blood! After the last murder the video stated that Tumblety fled to New York where not long after having arrived there a murder took place that was alot like the white chapel murders! Some time after that it's said that he disappeared & was never seen or heard from again in regards to his so called quack doctor trade & only coming back into being talked about after his death!

I think that with all the information divulged in this video , it 's very likelly that FT was in fact the Ripper 🔪🔪
