YES - I've just bought a Rolleicord Va type 2 in beautiful condition and after watching your video several times feel very confident about using it ! It now forms part of my lovely collection of working cameras - a black paint Leica 2d, a Contax 2a,. a Zeiss Ikonta 520/2 and now a Rolleicord. We found my grandfathers ROLLEICORD 5b recently and he has many extra things like remote trigger and filters and more. All in one case - all original :D
Oh, that's a great find !! I hope the camera works well. Maybe the long shutter times are stuck if it hasn't been used in a long time, like on my camera. But you could still use it with the short times then (1/125, 1/250 etc.) ...!
Great review and exactly my thoughts too. I was looking to buy a 6x6 as an upgrade from my Nettar folding camera ... Almost bought a Hasselblad (too expensive), thought about the Bronica (age issues), C330 (size), RF (price) but then my mate who has every medium format camera said to try a Rolleicord Vb and sold me his spare. My favourite film camera by far now.

TLRs are my favorite type of 6x6 cameras. I have around twenty of them, but the Rolleicord Va is still on my wishlist, I'm still waiting for a good priced offer (150 € for your set was a real bargain, you rarely find that camera below 250 € without any accessories). My favorite TLR so far is the Voigtländer Brillant S, the version with the Compur Rapid shutter and the 5-element Heliar lens. Smaller and lighter than the Va, with a phenomenally bright viewfinder and an image quality in its own class.

Previously I had only worked with 35mm and a Canon AE-1. Working with 120 film has been a joy. I enjoy how you explain your work process without going into gimmicks.

@@annespellberg7173 I'm in Southern California, the extreme southeastern portion. It was definitely a pandemic purchase, but it's been great! I've been developing my own black and white pictures as well. If I was closer, I'd take you up on your offer to go photo shooting.
I would disagree - Tessar and Xenar (and Solinar, Elmar, Skopar etc.) are not interchangeable. They all have different strengths and weaknesses, their lens profiles are different, and even Tessars from different generations are not equal. But they are all perfectly good lenses.
Great video and a great camera. I have both Rolleicord Vb and several Rolleiflex 2.8 and 3.5. The Rolleiflex are easier to use because you don't need to cock the shutter, that's done automatically when you advance the film and the aperture and shutter dials are easier on the Rolleiflex, but in terms of image quality I really did not find any big difference, the Rolleicord is a fantastic camera at a great price point. By the way, I was shocked by how few people are in your city. It looks like you are the last man surviving after a terrible tragedy! I live in a city of 25 million people (Shanghai) so it's just amazing for me.
Thanks for your comment! Yes we‘ve been on some back streets, then very early in the day, and also it was very dull and rainy weather. Normally it’s much more busy on the streets in Düsseldorf. But it’s a tiny city compared to Shanghai nonetheless :) It’s true that the Rolleiflex is more convenient to use. But I think the Rolleicord is okay in most cases, especially if you have a late one (like in my video) that already has the double exposure lock. Both adorable cameras!
@@tomscameras Didn't know that the late models had a double exposure lock! I own a Rolleicord III (on loan to a friend, I'm using a Yashica Mat-124 G instead), and the shutter cocking/release lever is not that great (but I've managed to avoid double exposures most of the time ;-)).
Some weeks ago I bought a broken Rolleiflex IV. After shutter repair and CLA the camera is ready for final testing with film. Hope it will work. My Rolleiflex Automat works great and I agree that the special Rollei filters are great in handling and result.
Great to hear that another Rolleiflex has been brought back to work. I am in total love with my Rolleicord and frequently shoot it - can't understand how I could spend my whole life as a photographer so far without using one!
Hi Paul! There’s nothing bad about the Rolleicord! It’s not even temperamental or complex compared to many other cameras. So a well kept sample that has not been dropped or left in a moist cellar for many years most likely will not have a lot of hidden issues. Only the shutter will sometimes need an overhaul due to sticky old grease. But again that’s something that’s easy to check out when buying. And the image quality is fantastic! So … happy camera hunting!
I went back and forth between a Rollicord and a Rolleiflex. I ended up buying a Rolleiflex MX EVS with Xenar lens. I'm sure images well be the same quality from the 2 cameras. I just found a good deal on a CLA'D Rolleiflex 1st. I did get a Rolleikin with mine and think it will be useful. I've shot 1 roll of 120 and 1 of 35mm so far. Waiting for the results. Being able to use cheap 35mm film to experiment with flash exposure is a plus. Just good to have the option. I really enjoy your videos. I love being able to see some beautiful parts of Germany. I doubt i will ever make it there in person.
A good friend of mine also ended up buying a well maintained late 1950's Rolleiflex - and yes, the camera is a bit nicer in handling compared to the Rolleicord (nicer shutter button and dials)! I hope you will have a lot of fun with your camera!

When you use a traditional external light meter which often shows Exposure Value (EV) as well as the aperture and shutter options, it’s clear this drives the exposure control design for the Rolleicord. I use a Sekonic L-208 twinmate with my Rolleicord Va. While it shows the aperture and shutter speed solutions for the particular scene, it’s easiest just to read the EV (e.g. 13) from the meter and set the EV on your Rolleicord (with the aperture lever) and correct exposure is set with that one setting. Of course you want creative control over your shutter/aperture settings so then you just move the shutter lever. e.g. for ISO 100 and EV 13 and f8 the correct shutter is 1/125. In setting EV13 I’ve got a correctly exposed image but I might want to shoot at f5.6 so I just move the shutter lever to 1/250 and the Rolleicord automatically sets f5.6. It’s brilliantly simple and makes sense.
I have tree Rolleicords, one of them is the Va that I got recently. I love it, but I don’t like that the focusing knob is moved over to the ‘wrong side’ - on the left, like the Rolleiflexes. I’m used to have the focusing on the right side, which is the right side! Great video! 😊👍🏻
Hi Bernt, yes the older Rolleicords have the focuser on the right. I think they moved it to make way for the interchangeable thingie for the film counter when you use it as a 6x4.5 camera. Or they wanted it to be more "grown-up" = more Rolleflex-like? Thanks anyway for your feedback! Three Rolleicord's sounds a lot of fun!
Yes, it's fun to see all the small details that are different between all those models! Also between the Va and the Vb, there's a lot of small changes.

Thank you Paul! I never saw an Airesflex in real life, but it should be a beautiful 6x6 just like the Rolleicord. Sometimes I also love to shoot the folders. They are so convenient to carry around. Even though I admit that I definitely prefer the actual shooting experience of a TLR.
@@tomscameras I got the airesflex a while back it all seems to work I’ve just not got around to using it yet but I will. Yeah the folders are so portable I’m using them for street portraits at the mo people seem to like being photographed with them

Really great quality!!! The halo is a bit on the heavy side at night and adds some dreaminess to day shots.., but that is true for pretty much all the uncoated or poorly coated lenses of this era...it's a feature, not a drawback😁
I love that slightly dreamy but still very detailed look. But yes I see why some folks want to go even further in quality and get a Rolleiflex with the Xenotar or Planar …! But I also see why some do love the pre-war Rolleicord with the Triotar which gives an even more „vintage“ rendering …
Hi, Tom - I'm a collector, as well as an amateur photographer, I hold a preference for the Rollei TLR's. Currently I have a prototype 'Flex from around 1930, never meant for production so it's a bit crude in appearance, but the Zeiss uncoated lens does indeed produce sharp images. Ideally for B&W. An E-2 with 3.5 Xenotar, another E-2 with 3.5 Planar. I prefer the 3.5 over the 2.8 lenses, I feel their "edge sharpness" is better. I use the Xenotar for B&W, the Planar for color. Three 'Cord's, a very old II from the early thirties, uncoated lens, but very sharp, A V and a Vb. I too would prefer the right hand focus knob, but not a real issue. For the Vb and the E-2's I have the Rollei focusing accessory that corrects the image, nice, but HEAVY. Lately I use it less, instead just focusing and then using the "sport finder" function of the folding hood. Of all of my collection, Leica M-6 TTL, Hasselblad, Nikon, etc, I use the Rollei's by far the most often. Some say the 'Flex is far superior to the 'Cord, but I feel they are really quite alike in image quality. Unless enlarging more than 8X10 I see no appreciable difference, I consider the V and Vb to be entirely capable cameras and I use them a bit more often than the 'Flex models. Nice videos, thanks. Hi Patrick, many thanks for your detailed feedback! I think as with most Rolleicord users, I'm of course always browsing ads for the "real thing" - the Rolleiflex. But yes the Cord is so nice and capable, maybe I shouldn't worry. I am currently shooting a Rolleiflex SL66SE on loan and will also show that one in a future video. I am truly thankful to have that opportunity, and the camera is awesome but huge and heavy. Of course, its Planar lens is truly fantastic. So I can see that a Rolleiflex TLR with a Planar lens would be a great addition to my Rolleicord, but yes when I look at my negatives, the Cord really does a tremendous job already. Happy to hear that the Planar 3.5's are so good because I really value the compact size of the Rolleiflex / cord and the additional 100 or so grams at the front end of the 2.8 models maybe don't really help there. But you need your 30, 45, 60 seconds of time ... on the other hand, you need a tripod anyway at night so what does it matter! I once had a chat with a girl from Northern Australia and she pointed out that the weather in Germany would be so nice! The rain and the clouds! Teached me to see things with a different eye ... even though I'm still not the hugest of fans of a full day of drizzling rain and grey coulds! :)
Excellent video, Tom! I was never into square image format and TLRs, but i appreciate the people, creating excellent shots with TLRs. Rollei does have a way long history with TLRs. Rolleicord, or the more expensive Rolleiflex series, for instance with Zeiss Tessars. Rollei does have a history from the mightly Original Rolleiflex 6x6 K1, up to the limited, last Rolleiflex 2.8 FX-N from 2013.
Hi Marc! Yes Rolleiflex and Rolleicord are really legends. In a way it's a pity that the history stopped in 2014 ... in contrast to Leica who still are going strong!
@@tomscameras Yes, it is. But for TLR Lovers, there are so many Cameras out there, to choose from. Even with exchangeable lenses, like Mamiya C2xx, C3xx series.
@@marcp.1752 did you see my video about the Mamiya C330? I love it. But it’s a 1.7 kg camera, and that’s a huge difference (for me). I never feel like taking the Mamiya with me unless I have a very specific photo project. The Rolleicord I can see just as a walkaround or travel camera. At least in summer where you can easily shoot it hand-held.

Great camera, built like a tank with perfect optics. The only design problem is the film guiding system. If you don't shoot for a long time and you have film in the camera chamber, the first shot is taken on bent film. In this respect Japanese designs (Minolta Autocord, Mamiiya. Yashica) or even Czech Flexaret are much better.

Really helpful. My only thought is the background thempty thump music. Not that is clashes with the vintage cameras. But it is distracting. Natural sound would be better in footage about street photography and the right camera for that.

I have my father's Rollei but the loop and cable release are missing as well as the back with the filming suggestions. I don't think I can get it fixed so it sits on my mantle as decor. But thanks for your video I learned a lot about what I have.
It’s a pity if important parts of your camera are missing. Sometimes you can find spare parts online or also find someone who still services these cameras (that depends on where you live of course). But anyway, you’ve got a great memory piece of when your father took photos. That’s also nice!
Very nice video, I have the same Rolleicord, and a tapeten Rollei from the early 30's you've inspired me to use them! A little correction though, this is not a baby Rolleiflex, the TLRs called baby, are the ones made for 127 film, giving 4x4 cm images.
Oh yes, you are right! I have seen a 4x4 Rolleiflex recently in a local camera store. It's cute and beautiful! But if I would ever go for a 127 camera, I'd love to try out the Exacta VP from the 1930s. They shoot nice 40x63mm on 127 film!

Hey John! Cologne it was, actually! The shutter times were between 30 ... 75 seconds. I am using a modern light meter for this but you can also use an app for your smartphone. Yes so the camera was on a tripod and I was using a cable release (also with a small set screw, so you don't need to constantly press the release). Hello Tom, I've never commented before on any UA-cam videos. So pardon me. I am new at this. But I loved your video & photos of this Rolleicord Va, especially, the night shots. I am now in the market for Rolleicord V & I keep seeing on ebay postings on whether or not the lens have haze/fog , fungus, balsam separation, scratches. Some say there are small scratches and cleaning marks on the lens (this may be scratches?). I am trying to stay away from any of those. I have never bought an old & used camera. But since these are old cameras, realistically which ones should we avoid that would ultimately affect the image? Any tips & suggestions is greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Hey there! That’s actually a good question: how to find the best vintage camera buy today! Let’s face it, they are OLD and you always have to factor in some problems. So I got my camera described as being used only by the first owner many years ago and with a zillion of accessories in the original leather cases. The downside here was that because it has NOT been used for several years as well, the mechanism for the long shutter times seized due to old lubricant. It’s not broken (because it just needs a clean and new lubricants) but still that means you need to send it to some good repair guy to do that service. Some small dust spots in the glass are totally acceptable. Fungus I would avoid. Any old camera will have an issue like that. I tend to go for those that look as immaculate as I can find and the glass is clean. If the glass has problems or the camera has rust or big dents … steer away. If it is beautiful as mine, no dents no real damage, clean glass, but in need of a service then I would get it and factor in the expense of that service …

I have checked here in my area, Texas, U.S. that a CLA would be around $150-200. I am amazed that there are numerous ebay sellers from Japan with Near Mint or Mint condition TLRs for something this old. On the other hand, I see other ebay posts that say they got this from an estate sale or my wife stopped using it & it's been in the closet for 40 years or so & they don't know the condition of the lens. It feels like at times like the Wild Wild West. But I have found sellers who are also photographers & have actually serviced the cameras before posting. Seems like a better bet. Your Rolleicord Va is beautiful & it was this video that inspired me to change from Rolleicord III to V. Thank you for your help, Tom.
Curious thing to me is the fact that you look down into the camera. This might be good for candid " street photography " Nice photos film especially medium format is really beautiful and most importantly different !! in a world of sameness !!.

Ich belichte immer eher etwas zu viel (es ist ja Schwarzweiß-Film) und gebe +1 Blende. Aber da der Filter relativ schwach ist, sollte +2/3 Blende auch perfekt sein!

Maybe you are referring to the attachment for the 35mm film kit? That kit includes an auxiliary film counter that counts up to 36 exposures. The rest of that 35mm kit is removable so you can still shoot 6x6, but this thing is mounted sort of semi-permanently on the camera ...

Hi Patrick! Congrats on your new Rolleicord, I hope you'll like it! I was using sometimes Sunny 16 - especially around noon and outdoors that's quite easy. But if it's a bit more in the morning or evening, or for the night shots, I use a light meter. Thanks for a great video! I have some questions i hope you can help me with. Im a real beginner and i have a Rolleicord V. I got 400 black and white film and 200 colour film. When i read online it seems i should have a shutter speed as close to 400 as possible so i set the camera on 500. Then i have been changing the aperature(only) for my pics(following the sunny 16 rule). Is this a correct way of shooting pictures? Also i wonder if i change the aperature down to lets say 3,5 do i need a tripod or the picture gets blury? thanks🙏
Hey. Actually I made a video about "Sunny 16" some time ago, you can watch it here: ua-cam.com/video/dQQRFBGYJI4/v-deo.html Maybe it clears up some points for you already. About the aperture: The small numbers, e.g. f/3.5, actually mean that the actual aperture gets *bigger*. So, in other words, at f/3.5 much more light reaches your film through the lens than at f/8! That means, the apertures where you most likely will be using a tripod are more f/16 or f/22. Having said all that: With the Rolleicord, you can safely shoot at 1/125 and faster without the use of a tripod, and not get blurry photos. If you want to take a picture of a moving dog, car, person, then you want to use 1/500. If you hold your camera really still, you might get sharp shots at 1/60 and maybe 1/30, but that takes some practice. For any speed that is even slower, place the camera on something like a table, suitable handrails or whatever you might find, or use a tripod!

Beautiful camera, beautiful pictures 👍 I can’t believe that you paid for less than 200 euros for this beauty? How long ago was that? Because the price of these classic camera has gone up the roof, it’s about thousands or couple of thousands.
I got it for 150 Euros last December, so very recently. It was sold from a heir and I think it was the widow or daughter of a long-term amateur photographer. But it does need a shutter overhaul, so I will have to spend another 150 Euros. So all in all it is 300 Euros then. I still think that is a good price for such a nice camera. Maybe Rolleiflex and Rolleicord are also still more easy to get in Germany, as they were made here. Whereas for example if you want a nice Nikon F or F2, you definitely have a bigger choice in the US or in Japan ... Analog cameras are getting more and more expensive every day. But I reckon it still makes sense to look for reasonable offers!
This may have been asked and answered so Apologies if it’s a repeat. I’m just starting my TLR journey after having acquired a Kalloflex which is being serviced. I’d like to add a Rollei to my collection as well, primary concern is optical quality and sharpness/render capability. With Rolleiflex demanding higher prices, do you feel the Rolleicord can produce similar if not the same photographic results? I find the Rolleicord’s to be much more affordable and wondering why.. thanks in advance
Hey. The answer is: Yes and no :) it depends on the model! Rolleicord cameras come both with 3-element lenses and 4-element lenses. The 4-element lenses are called Tessar or Xenar, both are equally superb. That's what I have in my Rolleicord Va! The old Rolleiflex cameras came with the exactly same 4-element Tessar or Xenar lenses as the Rolleicord, so image quality is 100% exactly identical to a Rolleicord with the same lens. But then there are also the more expensive (and newer) models with a Planar or Xenotar lens. Those lenses are even better, and you see that in terms of border and corner sharpness especially at the open apertures like f/2.8 (if applicable), f/3.5, f/5.6 ... but once stopped down, I think the difference is barely visible. In my opinion, the Tessar or Xenar lenses are fantastic in their own right. I wouldn't ever look for more! Only if you want the very last bit of optical perfection, then you have to look for a more expensive Rolleiflex with the Planar or Xenotar lens.
There should be a hard stop every time that the film is advanced by one frame. However the mechanism does not work if there is no film at all in the camera. The mechanism also doesn’t stop after one full frame anymore if you’re past 12 exposures. Provided that the exposure counter works … does it work on your camera?
I was wondering about who to trust in terms of purchasing a TLR Rollei. I have been recommended Kamerastore. Do you know of any others who also issue guarantees and a detailed report on their restored cameras for sale? Thanks, David
Kamerastore is well known yes. I personally don’t have any experience with them. I admit that I don’t have a lot of experience with camera dealers because there are three nice stores right here in Cologne in Germany that offer vintage cameras. They don’t do the level of documentation and are not as big as Kamerastore but then they still are reputable dealers. These three are cameradealer.de , foto-leistenschneider.de and foto-lambertin.de … not sure where you are located btw. Maybe there’s a good vintage camera dealer more locally as well?
@@tomscameras have now gone ahead with Kamerastore. Excellent service. Excellent condition Rolleiflex standard 4 with Zeiss Tessar. Works well and hardly used at all. Very exciting to switch back to analogue. Big step. No need to go for the overpriced later models with half a stop more 2.8 lens and a built in meter which may or may not work with a hard to replace battery. My alrernative was a Rolleicord Vb. But then this one came up.
I'm sorry but I don't know if it fits the V - in the original manual to the V, it is not mentioned, but it's listed in the Va and Vb manuals. I do know there's a different 16-frame / 4x4 superslide kit for the Va and for the Vb; the difference is in the mask for the viewfinder because the Vb has the interchangeable viewfinder like some concurrent Rolleiflex models. But I can't tell you if the kit for the Va also fits the V. I fear that it won't, because it wasn't listed in the manual back then and also the V and Va have different focus mechanisms (the focus wheel moved from right to left ...).
I think you’re right, the Va and Vb have the focus and winding knobs on different sides, the kit that allows for the 16-24 frames has new frame counters that have to be swapped out. I doubt they would fit the V also. I was hoping they would for better film economy. Someone had a NIB kit on eBay for $65, smart buy if it would fit.
The interlocked dials were a bad idea from today's point of view, yes! A word about the screen. That's the reason why so many folks want the Rolleicord Vb instead - but then you won't get that nice push-up-push-down viewfinder hood! The screens are easily exchangeable also on the old Rolleicords ... just four screws and you've got the whole assembly (hood + screens) in your hands. I think there are some expensive and also some cheaper third-party replacement screens out there, but I didn't bother yet to check in detail. But there's nothing wrong with the Yashicamat, especially the older models! Great camera!
I cringe all the time, seeing you handling the camera without straps or anything else for safety … I would be scared! Especially with a camera in this nice condition. And the straps are useful to steady the camera (if short enough).
Actually I do use cases and straps but during filming I tend to take those off, so that all the details of the camera are easier to see. I also always bring a camera bag with all the assorted stuff that we need during filming, but we keep it „off stage“ so you don’t see it in the video. So don’t worry, cameras are handled well and with care; I know they are precious and in many videos they are my own cameras anyway!
@@tomscameras It's more my own fear of dropping a camera that plays into this. (I have to admit that I never dropped a camera out of my hands, but had them falling out of camera bags … 😁)
The problem is that ALL the analog cameras get more and more expensive. Here in Germany, and maybe also some other European countries (where these also sold well back in the day), you occasionally can still find Rolleiflex and Rolleicord bargains ... but it takes some time ...!
YES - I've just bought a Rolleicord Va type 2 in beautiful condition and after watching your video several times feel very confident about using it ! It now forms part of my lovely collection of working cameras - a black paint Leica 2d, a Contax 2a,. a Zeiss Ikonta 520/2 and now a Rolleicord. Oh, that's a great find !! I hope the camera works well. Maybe the long shutter times are stuck if it hasn't been used in a long time, like on my camera. But you could still use it with the short times then (1/125, 1/250 etc.) ...!
Great review and exactly my thoughts too. I was looking to buy a 6x6 as an upgrade from my Nettar folding camera ... Almost bought a Hasselblad (too expensive), thought about the Bronica (age issues), C330 (size), RF (price) but then my mate who has every medium format camera said to try a Rolleicord Vb and sold me his spare. My favourite film camera by far now.

TLRs are my favorite type of 6x6 cameras. I have around twenty of them, but the Rolleicord Va is still on my wishlist, I'm still waiting for a good priced offer (150 € for your set was a real bargain, you rarely find that camera below 250 € without any accessories). My favorite TLR so far is the Voigtländer Brillant S, the version with the Compur Rapid shutter and the 5-element Heliar lens. Smaller and lighter than the Va, with a phenomenally bright viewfinder and an image quality in its own class.

I would disagree - Tessar and Xenar (and Solinar, Elmar, Skopar etc.) are not interchangeable. They all have different strengths and weaknesses, their lens profiles are different, and even Tessars from different generations are not equal. But they are all perfectly good lenses.

Great video and a great camera. I have both Rolleicord Vb and several Rolleiflex 2.8 and 3.5. The Rolleiflex are easier to use because you don't need to cock the shutter, that's done automatically when you advance the film and the aperture and shutter dials are easier on the Rolleiflex, but in terms of image quality I really did not find any big difference, the Rolleicord is a fantastic camera at a great price point. By the way, I was shocked by how few people are in your city. It looks like you are the last man surviving after a terrible tragedy! I live in a city of 25 million people (Shanghai) so it's just amazing for me.

It’s true that the Rolleiflex is more convenient to use. But I think the Rolleicord is okay in most cases, especially if you have a late one (like in my video) that already has the double exposure lock. Both adorable cameras!
@@tomscameras Didn't know that the late models had a double exposure lock! I own a Rolleicord III (on loan to a friend, I'm using a Yashica Mat-124 G instead), and the shutter cocking/release lever is not that great (but I've managed to avoid double exposures most of the time ;-)).
My Rolleiflex 3.5F with the Zeiss Planar lens... You'll have to be careful not to cut yourself for how sharp that lens is ;) Great video!

Some weeks ago I bought a broken Rolleiflex IV. After shutter repair and CLA the camera is ready for final testing with film. Hope it will work. My Rolleiflex Automat works great and I agree that the special Rollei filters are great in handling and result.
Great to hear that another Rolleiflex has been brought back to work. I am in total love with my Rolleicord and frequently shoot it - can't understand how I could spend my whole life as a photographer so far without using one!

Hi Paul! There’s nothing bad about the Rolleicord! It’s not even temperamental or complex compared to many other cameras. So a well kept sample that has not been dropped or left in a moist cellar for many years most likely will not have a lot of hidden issues. Only the shutter will sometimes need an overhaul due to sticky old grease. But again that’s something that’s easy to check out when buying. And the image quality is fantastic! So … happy camera hunting!

I went back and forth between a Rollicord and a Rolleiflex. I ended up buying a Rolleiflex MX EVS with Xenar lens. I'm sure images well be the same quality from the 2 cameras. I just found a good deal on a CLA'D Rolleiflex 1st. I did get a Rolleikin with mine and think it will be useful. I've shot 1 roll of 120 and 1 of 35mm so far. Waiting for the results. Being able to use cheap 35mm film to experiment with flash exposure is a plus. Just good to have the option. I really enjoy your videos. I love being able to see some beautiful parts of Germany. I doubt i will ever make it there in person.
A good friend of mine also ended up buying a well maintained late 1950's Rolleiflex - and yes, the camera is a bit nicer in handling compared to the Rolleicord (nicer shutter button and dials)! I hope you will have a lot of fun with your camera!

When you use a traditional external light meter which often shows Exposure Value (EV) as well as the aperture and shutter options, it’s clear this drives the exposure control design for the Rolleicord.
I use a Sekonic L-208 twinmate with my Rolleicord Va. While it shows the aperture and shutter speed solutions for the particular scene, it’s easiest just to read the EV (e.g. 13) from the meter and set the EV on your Rolleicord (with the aperture lever) and correct exposure is set with that one setting.
Of course you want creative control over your shutter/aperture settings so then you just move the shutter lever. e.g. for ISO 100 and EV 13 and f8 the correct shutter is 1/125. In setting EV13 I’ve got a correctly exposed image but I might want to shoot at f5.6 so I just move the shutter lever to 1/250 and the Rolleicord automatically sets f5.6. It’s brilliantly simple and makes sense.

I have tree Rolleicords, one of them is the Va that I got recently. I love it, but I don’t like that the focusing knob is moved over to the ‘wrong side’ - on the left, like the Rolleiflexes. I’m used to have the focusing on the right side, which is the right side! Great video! 😊👍🏻
Hi Bernt, yes the older Rolleicords have the focuser on the right. I think they moved it to make way for the interchangeable thingie for the film counter when you use it as a 6x4.5 camera. Or they wanted it to be more "grown-up" = more Rolleflex-like? Thanks anyway for your feedback! Three Rolleicord's sounds a lot of fun!

Really great quality!!! The halo is a bit on the heavy side at night and adds some dreaminess to day shots.., but that is true for pretty much all the uncoated or poorly coated lenses of this era...it's a feature, not a drawback😁
I love that slightly dreamy but still very detailed look. But yes I see why some folks want to go even further in quality and get a Rolleiflex with the Xenotar or Planar …! But I also see why some do love the pre-war Rolleicord with the Triotar which gives an even more „vintage“ rendering …

I'm a collector, as well as an amateur photographer, I hold a preference for the Rollei TLR's. Currently I have a prototype 'Flex from around 1930, never meant for production so it's a bit crude in appearance, but the Zeiss uncoated lens does indeed produce sharp images. Ideally for B&W.
An E-2 with 3.5 Xenotar, another E-2 with 3.5 Planar. I prefer the 3.5 over the 2.8 lenses, I feel their "edge sharpness" is better. I use the Xenotar for B&W, the Planar for color.
Three 'Cord's, a very old II from the early thirties, uncoated lens, but very sharp, A V and a Vb. I too would prefer the right hand focus knob, but not a real issue.
For the Vb and the E-2's I have the Rollei focusing accessory that corrects the image, nice, but HEAVY. Lately I use it less, instead just focusing and then using the "sport finder" function of the folding hood.
Of all of my collection, Leica M-6 TTL, Hasselblad, Nikon, etc, I use the Rollei's by far the most often.
Some say the 'Flex is far superior to the 'Cord, but I feel they are really quite alike in image quality. Unless enlarging more than 8X10 I see no appreciable difference, I consider the V and Vb to be entirely capable cameras and I use them a bit more often than the 'Flex models.

Hi Patrick, many thanks for your detailed feedback! I think as with most Rolleicord users, I'm of course always browsing ads for the "real thing" - the Rolleiflex. But yes the Cord is so nice and capable, maybe I shouldn't worry.
I am currently shooting a Rolleiflex SL66SE on loan and will also show that one in a future video. I am truly thankful to have that opportunity, and the camera is awesome but huge and heavy. Of course, its Planar lens is truly fantastic. So I can see that a Rolleiflex TLR with a Planar lens would be a great addition to my Rolleicord, but yes when I look at my negatives, the Cord really does a tremendous job already.
Happy to hear that the Planar 3.5's are so good because I really value the compact size of the Rolleiflex / cord and the additional 100 or so grams at the front end of the 2.8 models maybe don't really help there. Regards, Thomas

Those prints must be sharp as hell. Gorgeous.You live in a beautiful place, too. Living in California we have no grey, all sun, all the time. Believe it or not, it gets boring too! I'd love some monotone snow covered shots once in a while.

I once had a chat with a girl from Northern Australia and she pointed out that the weather in Germany would be so nice! The rain and the clouds! Teached me to see things with a different eye ... even though I'm still not the hugest of fans of a full day of drizzling rain and grey coulds! :)
Excellent video, Tom! I was never into square image format and TLRs, but i appreciate the people, creating excellent shots with TLRs. Rollei does have a way long history with TLRs. Rolleicord, or the more expensive Rolleiflex series, for instance with Zeiss Tessars. Rollei does have a history from the mightly Original Rolleiflex 6x6 K1, up to the limited, last Rolleiflex 2.8 FX-N from 2013.
Hi Marc! Yes Rolleiflex and Rolleicord are really legends. In a way it's a pity that the history stopped in 2014 ... in contrast to Leica who still are going strong!
@@tomscameras Yes, it is. But for TLR Lovers, there are so many Cameras out there, to choose from. Even with exchangeable lenses, like Mamiya C2xx, C3xx series.
@@marcp.1752 did you see my video about the Mamiya C330? I love it. But it’s a 1.7 kg camera, and that’s a huge difference (for me). I never feel like taking the Mamiya with me unless I have a very specific photo project. The Rolleicord I can see just as a walkaround or travel camera. At least in summer where you can easily shoot it hand-held.

Great camera, built like a tank with perfect optics. The only design problem is the film guiding system. If you don't shoot for a long time and you have film in the camera chamber, the first shot is taken on bent film. In this respect Japanese designs (Minolta Autocord, Mamiiya. Yashica) or even Czech Flexaret are much better.

Really helpful. My only thought is the background thempty thump music. Not that is clashes with the vintage cameras. But it is distracting. Natural sound would be better in footage about street photography and the right camera for that.

I have my father's Rollei but the loop and cable release are missing as well as the back with the filming suggestions. I don't think I can get it fixed so it sits on my mantle as decor. But thanks for your video I learned a lot about what I have.
It’s a pity if important parts of your camera are missing. Sometimes you can find spare parts online or also find someone who still services these cameras (that depends on where you live of course). But anyway, you’ve got a great memory piece of when your father took photos. That’s also nice!
Very nice video, I have the same Rolleicord, and a tapeten Rollei from the early 30's you've inspired me to use them! A little correction though, this is not a baby Rolleiflex, the TLRs called baby, are the ones made for 127 film, giving 4x4 cm images.

But if I would ever go for a 127 camera, I'd love to try out the Exacta VP from the 1930s. They shoot nice 40x63mm on 127 film!

Hey John! Cologne it was, actually! The shutter times were between 30 ... 75 seconds. I am using a modern light meter for this but you can also use an app for your smartphone. Yes so the camera was on a tripod and I was using a cable release (also with a small set screw, so you don't need to constantly press the release).

Hello Tom, I've never commented before on any UA-cam videos. So pardon me. I am new at this. But I loved your video & photos of this Rolleicord Va, especially, the night shots. I am now in the market for Rolleicord V & I keep seeing on ebay postings on whether or not the lens have haze/fog , fungus, balsam separation, scratches. Some say there are small scratches and cleaning marks on the lens (this may be scratches?). I am trying to stay away from any of those. I have never bought an old & used camera. But since these are old cameras, realistically which ones should we avoid that would ultimately affect the image? Any tips & suggestions is greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Hey there! That’s actually a good question: how to find the best vintage camera buy today! Let’s face it, they are OLD and you always have to factor in some problems. So I got my camera described as being used only by the first owner many years ago and with a zillion of accessories in the original leather cases. The downside here was that because it has NOT been used for several years as well, the mechanism for the long shutter times seized due to old lubricant. It’s not broken (because it just needs a clean and new lubricants) but still that means you need to send it to some good repair guy to do that service.
Some small dust spots in the glass are totally acceptable. Fungus I would avoid.
Any old camera will have an issue like that. I tend to go for those that look as immaculate as I can find and the glass is clean. If the glass has problems or the camera has rust or big dents … steer away.
If it is beautiful as mine, no dents no real damage, clean glass, but in need of a service then I would get it and factor in the expense of that service …

I have checked here in my area, Texas, U.S. that a CLA would be around $150-200. I am amazed that there are numerous ebay sellers from Japan with Near Mint or Mint condition TLRs for something this old. On the other hand, I see other ebay posts that say they got this from an estate sale or my wife stopped using it & it's been in the closet for 40 years or so & they don't know the condition of the lens. It feels like at times like the Wild Wild West.
But I have found sellers who are also photographers & have actually serviced the cameras before posting. Seems like a better bet.

Great video thank you !! I was curious as to what is the function of the number dial on upper left side of the camera( not the frame counter) , I don’t see that a lot on that the VA or VB camera
Maybe you are referring to the attachment for the 35mm film kit? That kit includes an auxiliary film counter that counts up to 36 exposures. The rest of that 35mm kit is removable so you can still shoot 6x6, but this thing is mounted sort of semi-permanently on the camera ...

Anyway, I do have a question on the aperture/shutter speed setting ...do u actually use a light meter or just based on SUNNY 16 ?
I have not go out to shoot yet cause I am not very sure whats the best setting for this camera on Sunny Day. Overcast and Night shot.

Hi Patrick! Congrats on your new Rolleicord, I hope you'll like it! I was using sometimes Sunny 16 - especially around noon and outdoors that's quite easy. But if it's a bit more in the morning or evening, or for the night shots, I use a light meter. You can also use a smartphone with metering app.

Thanks for a great video! I have some questions i hope you can help me with. Im a real beginner and i have a Rolleicord V. I got 400 black and white film and 200 colour film. When i read online it seems i should have a shutter speed as close to 400 as possible so i set the camera on 500. Then i have been changing the aperature(only) for my pics(following the sunny 16 rule). Is this a correct way of shooting pictures? Also i wonder if i change the aperature down to lets say 3,5 do i need a tripod or the picture gets blury?

Maybe it clears up some points for you already.
About the aperture: The small numbers, e.g. f/3.5, actually mean that the actual aperture gets *bigger*. So, in other words, at f/3.5 much more light reaches your film through the lens than at f/8! That means, the apertures where you most likely will be using a tripod are more f/16 or f/22.
Having said all that: With the Rolleicord, you can safely shoot at 1/125 and faster without the use of a tripod, and not get blurry photos. If you want to take a picture of a moving dog, car, person, then you want to use 1/500. If you hold your camera really still, you might get sharp shots at 1/60 and maybe 1/30, but that takes some practice. For any speed that is even slower, place the camera on something like a table, suitable handrails or whatever you might find, or use a tripod!

15-60 seconds, depending on how much light there was on the streets. I used an external light meter actually.

I just bought the rolleicord iv. I love it I haven’t developped a film yet . I’m buying the v today because it’s a good deal and in mint condition I thought I would carry both one color one bw… but how did yyou take the night shots? Can tge iv do that?

Beautiful camera, beautiful pictures 👍 I can’t believe that you paid for less than 200 euros for this beauty? How long ago was that? Because the price of these classic camera has gone up the roof, it’s about thousands or couple of thousands.
I got it for 150 Euros last December, so very recently. It was sold from a heir and I think it was the widow or daughter of a long-term amateur photographer. But it does need a shutter overhaul, so I will have to spend another 150 Euros. So all in all it is 300 Euros then. I still think that is a good price for such a nice camera.
Maybe Rolleiflex and Rolleicord are also still more easy to get in Germany, as they were made here. Whereas for example if you want a nice Nikon F or F2, you definitely have a bigger choice in the US or in Japan ...
Analog cameras are getting more and more expensive every day. But I reckon it still makes sense to look for reasonable offers!
This may have been asked and answered so Apologies if it’s a repeat. I’m just starting my TLR journey after having acquired a Kalloflex which is being serviced. I’d like to add a Rollei to my collection as well, primary concern is optical quality and sharpness/render capability. With Rolleiflex demanding higher prices, do you feel the Rolleicord can produce similar if not the same photographic results? I find the Rolleicord’s to be much more affordable and wondering why.. thanks in advance
Hey. The answer is: Yes and no :) it depends on the model!
Rolleicord cameras come both with 3-element lenses and 4-element lenses. The 4-element lenses are called Tessar or Xenar, both are equally superb. That's what I have in my Rolleicord Va!
The old Rolleiflex cameras came with the exactly same 4-element Tessar or Xenar lenses as the Rolleicord, so image quality is 100% exactly identical to a Rolleicord with the same lens.
But then there are also the more expensive (and newer) models with a Planar or Xenotar lens. Those lenses are even better, and you see that in terms of border and corner sharpness especially at the open apertures like f/2.8 (if applicable), f/3.5, f/5.6 ... but once stopped down, I think the difference is barely visible.
In my opinion, the Tessar or Xenar lenses are fantastic in their own right. I wouldn't ever look for more! Only if you want the very last bit of optical perfection, then you have to look for a more expensive Rolleiflex with the Planar or Xenotar lens.

I have a Rolleicord v, when I advance the film, the knobs doesn't stop. Is it possible to?
There should be a hard stop every time that the film is advanced by one frame. However the mechanism does not work if there is no film at all in the camera. The mechanism also doesn’t stop after one full frame anymore if you’re past 12 exposures. Provided that the exposure counter works … does it work on your camera?
I was wondering about who to trust in terms of purchasing a TLR Rollei. I have been recommended Kamerastore. Do you know of any others who also issue guarantees and a detailed report on their restored cameras for sale? Thanks, David
Kamerastore is well known yes. I personally don’t have any experience with them. I admit that I don’t have a lot of experience with camera dealers because there are three nice stores right here in Cologne in Germany that offer vintage cameras. They don’t do the level of documentation and are not as big as Kamerastore but then they still are reputable dealers. These three are cameradealer.de , foto-leistenschneider.de and foto-lambertin.de … not sure where you are located btw. Maybe there’s a good vintage camera dealer more locally as well?
@@tomscameras have now gone ahead with Kamerastore. Excellent service. Excellent condition Rolleiflex standard 4 with Zeiss Tessar. Works well and hardly used at all. Very exciting to switch back to analogue. Big step. No need to go for the overpriced later models with half a stop more 2.8 lens and a built in meter which may or may not work with a hard to replace battery.
My alrernative was a Rolleicord Vb. But then this one came up.
Will the smaller negative kit fit in a model V.
I'm sorry but I don't know if it fits the V - in the original manual to the V, it is not mentioned, but it's listed in the Va and Vb manuals.
I do know there's a different 16-frame / 4x4 superslide kit for the Va and for the Vb; the difference is in the mask for the viewfinder because the Vb has the interchangeable viewfinder like some concurrent Rolleiflex models.
But I can't tell you if the kit for the Va also fits the V. I fear that it won't, because it wasn't listed in the manual back then and also the V and Va have different focus mechanisms (the focus wheel moved from right to left ...).
I think you’re right, the Va and Vb have the focus and winding knobs on different sides, the kit that allows for the 16-24 frames has new frame counters that have to be swapped out. I doubt they would fit the V also. I was hoping they would for better film economy. Someone had a NIB kit on eBay for $65, smart buy if it would fit.

The interlocked dials were a bad idea from today's point of view, yes!
A word about the screen. That's the reason why so many folks want the Rolleicord Vb instead - but then you won't get that nice push-up-push-down viewfinder hood! The screens are easily exchangeable also on the old Rolleicords ... just four screws and you've got the whole assembly (hood + screens) in your hands.
I think there are some expensive and also some cheaper third-party replacement screens out there, but I didn't bother yet to check in detail.
But there's nothing wrong with the Yashicamat, especially the older models! Great camera!
@@tomscameras my Yashica Mat is very early. 1957 with the 75mm Lumaxar f3.5 lens. Perfect condition after all these years.

I cringe all the time, seeing you handling the camera without straps or anything else for safety … I would be scared! Especially with a camera in this nice condition. And the straps are useful to steady the camera (if short enough).
Actually I do use cases and straps but during filming I tend to take those off, so that all the details of the camera are easier to see. I also always bring a camera bag with all the assorted stuff that we need during filming, but we keep it „off stage“ so you don’t see it in the video. So don’t worry, cameras are handled well and with care; I know they are precious and in many videos they are my own cameras anyway!

Prices on anything Rollei have gone through the roof.
The problem is that ALL the analog cameras get more and more expensive. Here in Germany, and maybe also some other European countries (where these also sold well back in the day), you occasionally can still find Rolleiflex and Rolleicord bargains ... but it takes some time ...!
