- Let go of your General Prevailing Assumptions and rest in the reality of God’s Kingdom here on earth.
Daily Question for the Comments:
What might be some general prevailing assumptions in our world today?
Here's How:
Read through the Beatitudes and consider how these "Blessed" statements from Jesus fly in the face of our culture's General Prevailing Assumptions.
Now reflect on your own life. In what way are you living under the culture's General Prevailing Assumptions as opposed to the truths of God's Kingdom articulated by Jesus?
Become New is here to help you grow spiritually one day at a time.

What might be some general prevailing assumptions in our world today?
Good stuff!
That our value is based on our achievements, that love is about getting our needs met, that our identity is defined by our feelings
being loved (or lovable) is the ultimate goal -
Having become a Christian as an adult, these teachings are paramount for growth in Christ. I feel truly blessed by this ministry 🙏🏻🩵🕊
“Illustrating what life in the kingdom looks like, to puncture our general prevailing attitudes”.
Great reminder that Jesus teaches to change lives, as opposed to our present day tendency to parrot information or teaching! A rather subtle shift in perspective that really brings more life and freedom to the teachings in this passage🙌🏼
yes! "parrot information" great call out
GPA - I need to manage my day, stick to the plan, follow the course or I’ll lose out, get behind, become overwhelmed. Teaching of Kingdom - release self-management, rest in Him for leading you through the day, and be open to interruptions. God knows the # of hairs on your head, how to turn water into wine, and loves to give and give and give as the prodigal son learned. Release, relax, rest, repeat!
ooooohhh, that's a good one!
The GPA John shared about "scale" is very pervasive, especially in our culture (church and culture in general). It's a struggle to feel "significant" unless I do something"big." But the truth of following Jesus is that he most always is about the one person right in front of me and not the masses. The Kingdom of the Skies is about the 1...that's really all we can connect with at a time. Jesus inverts our ways most every time!
Great message today, John 🎉❤
One prevailing assumption: Busier is better! Somehow being sooooooo busy increases my importance. I feel guilty not being ‘productive’ all the time!
Oof. that's a good one
My GPA would be that good things happen to good people. Then, I ask why my life is full of continuous struggles or attacks. Will they ever end seems to be my question when I give the enemy airtime in my head. I have however learned, from Dallas and John that the way through refining fire is Isahia 41:13. God will reach down and take me by the hand through the fire if I let him. Why the fire comes, I don't know, but all I need to know is that I have one who will always be with me in the fire. I keep my eyes on him, not the circumstances. Thank you, John, for this enlightening lesson.
Society makes us think we need to be seen to be validated. I feel most of how people are being seen is through social media. I would rather be seen in the background helping my neighbors/community.
GPA= General Prevailing Attitude or General Prevailing Assumption. Old public school teachers like me may take a little while to convert those 3 letters into their new meaning.
You never fail to bring something so powerful that my eyes are open to the will of Jesus in my life. THANK YOU !
Brilliant. There's a bit of a glow from you in this one, John. Perhaps from doing the will of the Father earlier? Like a brisk walk in the cold can change our disposition, obeying a prompting has a way of moving us beyond our usual daily concerns. Thanks for "puncturing the general prevailing assumptions."
That if I am different from someone, my daughter or my friend that I am wrong. God knows my heart, therefore I may be right in Gods sight but wrong in an unbeliever’s eyes.
Thank you for sharing every day!!
Ah, that's a good one Debbie. Thanks for sharing
One general prevailing assumption I fall into is thinking I need to know the truth so I must avail myself to different news sources because some of them are biased. I don’t need to. My Heavenly Father knows and He will guide me. And I’m not in charge!
Thank you for reminding me that 'people' are important in my day whoever that might be
Thank you Father God for a daily devotional that speaks life over me and in turn will become a blessing to those around me
The beliefs and expectations I’ve been taught to place on myself tend to bleed over onto others. Distorts my view of God and corrupts the extension of genuine love and grace. I recognized this a couple years ago and have been working on it, but wow, GPA’s tend to become entrenched in us!
I love this message, it encapsulates spiritual growth and freedom
Letting go of my finances - my perceived security - is an ongoing challenge for me. I need to remind myself that the Lord is my provider.
“Statements designed to puncture our prevailing assumptions.” Just leaped out at me. Such panoramic words! Who says “puncture” these days? A word made fresh all over again. Thank you John.
A GPA I struggle with is that if I don't take care of it God won't take care of it. Always working on that one
So helpful
“Puncture the general prevailing attitude”- so good!
I think that the overall teaching, or assumption of the SotM is that Jesus' followers are to stand out in the world, to shine His light (not our own) and to startle people by our radical and generous non worldly behavior.
We can't accomplish any of these teachings on our own without the Helper, the Holy Spirit.
love that. YES
@@BecomeNew thank you!
Great stuff!
Glad you enjoyed it. Bucky
My personal general prevailing assumption is that my day starts with getting through my spiritual routines that I fail to pay attention or give ample attention to the person God sent my way. Often this is towards those who live in my household! Thank you for this teaching. Hit home.
The good news of the law of inversion... I love it. No more engineering formulas for me in the Kingdom. :)
I feel that a prevailing assumption today is that believing in God is not that important. Or better put that saying that I have changed because of my beliefs is not accepted. I’m often accused of being a hypocrite because I no longer care about the same things I did before. My saying that it is because I have changed because of God is not acceptable because God is not that important a Person today.
One general prevailing assumption is that there are no general prevailing assumptions and each of us is free to do what we see best in our own eyes, with no consequences--either now or in the future--because we won't be caught, or if caught, we won't be held accountable--either now or in the future.
Love you posting a question, Tim. Something to ponder as we listen. Love fair amount of humor intertwined.
Always a word that brings insights, power and purpose to our lives! Grateful to hear these teacings! Thanks 🙏
One GPA that comes to mind is that I can control the number of days I will be on this earth . All I have to do is follow all of the health advice on the web. I believe in taking care of myself but not to add years to my life but life to my years.
So important to remember
So appreciate the concepts that John brings forward. Having grown up with a legalistic view of the words of Jesus, it is freeing to move into a GPA attitude and changing my life in the moment.
I love this clarification that Jesus was speaking to puncture prevailing assumptions.
So grateful for John’s teaching. I look forward to it everyday 🙏🏻
I often find the Bible difficult to understand. Thank you for breaking it down to my learning level. For a second, I recalled sitting at New Community on a Wednesday night watching, listening, learning, scribbling in my Bible, and understanding your teachings! I'm so grateful for your gift, John! God bless you and Nancy
!
This is so helpful! This is the Kingdom He offers us now!
I love this teaching on the General prevailing attitude. One of those might be that there’s just not enough so I need to grab and take care of myself and my people. But in the Kingdom we have a generous Father who provides richly. ( resources, time, strength etc).
gosh that's a good one. Scarcity mentality!
Ohhhhh. A golden rule day. Love it!
This unlocked YEARS and YEARS of misunderstanding about the Sermon on the Mount.
I can clearly see how Jesus’ teachings puncture the prevailing and normal human systems we live in. Failing and guilt on these has had me for YEARS in a cycle of despair, hoping Jesus’ sacrifice would make me tolerable to God. At the most, tolerable enough not to be thrown away.
How could this understanding not be true, though? The Lord’s Prayer assumes we have sin, and must own both the sin and expectation of God’s loving mercy.
I’m so thankful to hear this. I want to dwell on the Sermon and think about how it punctures the human systems of this world. Thank you, Lord.
Thank you Ryan for sharing a part of your journey - we appreciate your thoughts and heart to share with the Become New Community Bucky
Making it a Golden Rule Day!❤️🙌❤️
Tim and John guys i celebrate your creativity and clarity in teaching I pray we me to spot the GPA root and allow Jesus through the spirit to show the path in the Kingdom. Wow Im loving this
amen
My prevailing assumption that Jesus puunctured today is that knowledge and the love of Jesus' Gospel is enough and loving others is not as important. What I need to ponder: What good is my love of knowledge of Jesus' gospel if I dont love people as Jesus does; if I love and give knowledge to be loved and NOT to give love, what good is it?
How great to get back into the daily routine with Become New! It was missed greatly.
Good morning John,
thank you so much for this series and message. It resonates very deeply with me and touches me deep inside. It reminds me what means to follow Jesus and encourages me to not give up pursuing this life. -
Funny little story:
Today my daughter asked me, whether I am older than John. - I am 49 ... so be encouraged... 😊
Greetings from South Africa
good morning ☀️ GPA for me I would say it’s my “principles”, my so-called moral compass…thank you for shaking me free…
and let God.💕🍃
Let’s live in God’s Kingdom of the beatitudes today here on Earth.
Living in a state of grace is what it’s all about!
Great help thx
So thanks for bringing clarity to this passage of scripture which can often be confusing
John, thank you for your authentic and clear teaching. My husband and I appreciate this resource so much! Also, it hasn’t been until recently that I have come to understand that the Kingdom of Heaven is a “right now kingdom.” What a joy to do life with God!
Love the term engineer commands. This teaching is great in its clarity of thought and action. Kingdom principles are how are soul should react. Great stuff! I need a heart of action toward others that in turn bless me internally.
"GPA"! Wow! I had two or three of my own come to mind immediately. This structure will serve me for a long time; can't wait to share this with others.
I always get encouraged in my walk with Jesus from listening to Johns teaching. Keep on.
Thanks, John. A great explanation how we can bring "up there" to our lives "down here."
Thank you John, helpful message and a reminder about the Kingdom. I read Dallas Willard’s Divine Conspiracy last year and found it to be very impactful. Read it slowly over multiple months.
I don't think one can read it quickly! LOL thanks for sharing, Brian
I could easily throw out some "assumptions" regarding my own life, there are many but that would not give this lesson justice. I will seek to "puncture" my assumptions today in order to become more aligned with Jesus' statements. Thank you for this lesson!
Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks. I love the abundance of what is in John’s heart about the sermon on the mount. It is so interesting. It is so helpful. Thank you.
yes! Thanks, John
Very powerful and enlightening, thanks as always John. Jesus, as always with his teachings hit us between the ears provocatively to make us think as opposed to hitting us between the eyes to hurt us.
Again just what I needed
awesome to hear. thank you
It took courage for Dr. Willard to teach the "Be Attitudes" as he did. We want to praise those who are poor in spirit, merciful, or poorly treated rather than no matter your condition, you are blessed because the Kingdom of God is now an available option as we apprentice ourselves to Jesus and learn to do what he prescribed. Thank you, John, for filling in the gaps and continuing the do the work began by Dallas and others. I appreciate your courage and teachings. Please be encouraged to continue,
Thank you so much for your kind words and encouragement - we deeply appreciate it and are blessed. Bucky
Thank you for dedicating your life to helping others grow into new and better versions of themselves, me included!
I pray for your protection.
Thanks John for your insight and teaching! You always introduce new thoughts. Ones I need to ponder 😊
Thank you, John I really needed to hear this!
This has really helped me not to approach interpretation of the Bible in a rigid literal manner. One of my GPAs is "it's impossible to really change." Become New is helping me make incremental progress. Thank you.🙏🏻❤️
Thanks, John and others at Become New. You are doing great work!
Most people think that the "GPA - General Prevailing Assumption" about life can be found by watching TV, attending lectures, etc. They are right! However, there are 2 different GPA's, one of the current cultured and one found in God's word in the Bible. Most of us listen only to the first GPA, that of what man says. The only GPA worth thinking about and learning is found only in God's Word in the Bible. And that only happens when you pick up the Bible and do more that just read... you read and think deeply about what is said.
Thank you for sharing!
Thank you, John!
Love th is.
I think the general prevailing assumptions in our world today are the same as in Jesus’ day and perhaps that is part of the reason that Jesus’ words are still as relevant to us as in His day.
Love this! Thanks, John! I’m in (lead) a Bible reading/study group which, using YouVersion reading plans, read and discuss scripture nearly every day - and in this group this exact issue has, today, surfaced - Matthew 10 regarding loving one’s mother and father… This video will absolutely help us all!
❤
Really enjoyed what you had to say. Studying the Sermon in our church life group and it will be very helpful
.
Thanks
Jim
So glad you found it helpful and it will help you in your Church life group - thank you for listening - we are glad you are with us Bucky
Reading Mat.5:11 made me think of a GPA with the cancel
culture of today. But v12 is filled with eternal hope ♡.
Thanks for the excersise.
My GPA is that the way people look says something about them.
That hits. Thanks for sharing
Rabbi Jesus / teaching to change lives / become new / general prevailing assumptions / helpful concepts / discernment / 🍀
love these notes
❤ Thank you
Insightful, funny and very helpful!
One of my GPAs has been that I must do my devotional every morning without fail, allowing no interruptions from anyone. So I used to ignore friends or family who would text or call during this time. However, God opened my eyes to this a couple of years ago -- who was I doing the devotional FOR? Was it to impress God how faithful I was? And isn't it equally important to respond when someone needs me, putting my own desires aside? Thank God, I have changed this habit & no longer get irritated when someone interrupts me 😊
Watching this from the UK I’m always a bit behind as the video lands during the day for me! But I find this teaching SO helpful. I’m going to be on the look out for GPAs today … I think English ones will be much the same as American ones!
Thank you 🙏😊
Thank you!
So good!
I think the rule today is ME centered...All about me, what's in it for me, what does this mean for me? :(
ah, yes, so good. Tough to live out
So helpful!!
Im so grateful that my life is not determined by my Grade Point Average..:)
GPA=Legislating preferred or perceived moral behavior makes America a more God-fearing or blessed country.
GPA: Beauty, wealth, power=virtue or blessing.
oof. good one
Happy birth day symphony
A prevailing assumption would be by turning the other cheek Christians are suppose to be door mats.
❤
