I use Uber no issues so far. I avoid taxis based on recommendations from others. Third day here in Istanbul. Lost my phone in Sultanahmed. Went to the tourism office in the area. Asked them if anyone turned in a phone. Area is full of tourists. They checked and said no we don’t have your phone. 60 seconds later a guy whom I recognized from the police station followed me from the office, and got my attention. He pulled out a phone and it was mine. I was so so happy. It could have a been a disaster. He acted like he was an Arab. I was using google translate to speak with him. He acted like he didn’t understand Turkish. He said buy baklava in broken English. I said how much, he showed me a ridiculous price. He was going to take me to a shop he knows and that shop owner would have told me that price and I think he would have given them back in cash or something. No way 2000 lira of baklava is what he wanted. Anyway I gave him some 30’sh dollars I had in my pocket, told him thank you & walked away. Guy was not wearing police uniform.

Yes, it’s true, Uber works, Inforgot to mention that. But I was used to the way taxis worked in Antalya where there was no need for hassle and negotiations and bad energy. I thought it would be the same in Istanbul. Big mistake. Wow, how lucky that you found your phone. Something like this happened to me in Malaysia in the Perhentian Islands. I took my laundry to some laundry place on the beach, it was literally a stall. The next day I couldn’t find my go pro and I needed it for scuba diving. I went mad with worries searching everywhere. Couldn’t find it, in the end I went to all the places I went the previous day and to the laundry place. He had it there for me. He was such a lovely man, honest and gave it to me immediately. I was very, very touched.
