  • In the Old Testament, the color blue is cited in the book of Numbers and brings to mind obedience to the commandments of God, as opposed to a person’s will. “the Levites shall spread upon [the Ark of the Covenant] a cloth of blue” Num.4: 6. “And on the table of the bread of the Presence they must spread a cloth of blue color” Num.4: 7. In CHRISTIAN ART of the last thousand years, the color blue has always been associated with the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is the natural color of the sky, midnight blue and, therefore a celestial color representing transcendence, mystery and the divine. If not blue, bloody red, Christ’s own lifeblood, giving birth as queen to the children of God. Mary is the new Ark of the Covenant, because she kept within herself the Divine Presence of God. Blue reveals attributes of the Blessed Virgin Mary, her faithfulness and unique singularly, privileged human role, in the history of the salvation of the world. “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; according to his word.” Luke 1:38. (AD 431) Council of Ephesus Mary is the mother of the second person of the Blessed Trinity because neither the Father nor the Holy Spirit were incarnate. Therefore “If anyone does not confess that God is truly Emmanuel, and that on this account the Holy Virgin is the Mother of God (for according to the flesh she gave birth to the Word of God become flesh by birth), let him be anathema.”
