I have not ever really worked on automatic transmissions, but along with Agent 7678, we decided to give it a go, and just open it up and see what's happening! Got my Start in life at Cassia's Automatic Transmission shop back when dinosaurs still ran around White Plains New York. I would steam the transmissions off, take them apart and pile the pieces in three piles. Broken / Maybe / Good. Then Roland would do his magic and Wahoo... a rebuilt Merc-o-matic, Jetaway, Dynaflow, or Powerflite. I was 12 when I rebuilt my first transmission. It was a Powerglide from a 1953 Chevy with a torque-tube. The hardest part of the job was getting it out...Three times... before I got it right. Roland wouldn't help me with it... just "read the Motor's Manual" and "There's the tools." Gawd I miss those days. Last time I was in a garage, my 14-year-old grandson had to stay in the car, because no one under 21 was allowed in the shop... "Insurance rules" I was told. I wonder what Roland would think of this world. Thanks for the great (as usual) video.
@@jamesanderton344 Roland didn't like them. They had sticky throttle valves and a deep RPM drop between 1st and 2nd. He once opined that the slim jim was further evidence that GM was going to hell. By the time the slim jims were coming in for repairs (around 67 I believe) I had left Cassia's for college in the North County.
Idaho 2nd. Gens, YOU could get electronic ignition as a option back in "69" . So if he put one in he is still original. MUCH better than single points . 6 pack 440 mopars had DUEL points . That 400 motor SUCKED big time. That's when they started to put all the smog CRAP on the engines and lowered compression ratios.
@@libertyman3729 l take out electronic ign. to put in points. I've been stranded with electronics more than once. With points i can always limp home. My old flatheads run great w/ points.
@ If I could have my two-door '74 LTD back I'd probably do it. Bought it for $400.00 just before I graduated High School, and drove it for almost three years. I keep waiting for it to turn up in Dean's collection.
Something my father tought me when I was about 7 years old " you can't break what's already broken, and don't be afraid to take it apart. It was built by people" He was dissembling a Chrysler 904 at the time. It was one of the best lessons I ever learned.
Right! You learn a lot when there is "nothing to lose"! I have not had any experience with these autos because they are so reliable that I've never had a failure! Cheers from here...
I totally agree with this, but there is one exception. Have you ever tried to open up a 1985 Skoda 120 GLS "Signal light switch?, & Low Beam switch plus pushing it in was the horn". I did. The tiniest screws, springs, balls the size of Sesame seeds, all jumped simultaneously out of a switch no bigger than a pack of rothmans. They have never been found, lost forever in the carpet.

Love the Newport, reminds me of those 70's cop shows. The graat car chase scenes with those old boats rolling around corners with all the tyres screeching. Brilliant. Talking of which, gotta love old cop cars. You know, cop dirt, cop dents, cop rust. way better than any old civilian crap!
My grandpa was drafted in ww2.when he came home my grandma got him a carton of cigarettes for Christmas.she said open it.he told her he knew what cigarettes looked like.when she finally got him to open the carton she had saved all of his navy paychecks(that went to the wives).had never cashed any of them.worked all they would allow (Rosie the riveter) sold sandwiches to renters in their large house.etc..had enough to pay cash for 2 duplexes.hard working woman...

Growing up, the Newport always struck me as being very wide. I hope 7678 puts some food out there for the cat and lets him/her stay in the garage. I love the notion of the whole smoking segment. Being a collector, I will keep my eyes open for old wacky smoking items. My house is loaded with retro/vintage ash trays and match books. People always ask if I smoke when they know I don't. Dean needs to locate a Bill Blass Lincoln Mark V.
Hi Scott. I had the exact same problem with my first '57 Dodge in 1984. It would shift into first no problem but I had to rev it up to get it to engage reverse. Shops told me I would have to get a full rebuild but fortunately a mechanic friend of the family took a look and found that, like yours, it was a bad piston seal for the low/reverse band. He said that the broken seal allowed enough fluid to flow around the piston and not engage. When I revved the motor it would pump enough fluid to overwhelm the leak and move the piston, but it would also jolt the car into reverse. He scrounged around the shop and found a Ford seal that was close enough and put it back together. It drove perfectly the rest of the time I had it. So glad you saved yourself a needless rebuild. Thanks for a great episode and bringing back happy memories.

Based on the styling of 1960 Plymouth Fury and 1972 Chrysler Newport, in 12 short years the designers went from not seeing a curve they didn’t like in 1960 to just putting in the most subtle bends they could draw in 1972. Yet both cars are outstanding in their own way. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to enjoy them.
00:18 notice how Francine knows to make the return trip in the snow via the same footprints she made as she went out... And 43:38 "What if it doesn't start...?" We all know that the Chrysler cars of this Era ALWAYS started, and that this extended cranking isn't normal for these old daily drivers unless out of gas, vapor-locked, Distributor Rotor not in place after Tune-up, or the Ballast Resistor was shot. Ha! New name for these Segments "...These Old Cars...",where you teach the youngsters of "Today" about the difference of these old relics from the Modern Marvels... 43:52 The "side benefit" to the extended cranking sound here is that we Oldsters get to hear that nostalgic Chrysler starter sound again after too many years. But we also know that, unlike the computerized cars of Today, the non-computerized cars of Yesteryear usually fire up before the first engine revolution because there is no Big Brother computer checking first for "all Systems Go" before granting fire. So even though like me, you probably don't like to monkey with something that ain't really broken, *for the sake of the Starter* (you Jonathan W. viewers know what I am talking about ;-), I would first check to see if the gas (or do you call it Petrol, eh?) after shutdown is leaking from the carburetor into the intake from a perished gasket, or perhaps the gasoline is percolating out of the carb after the shutdown heat-soaking due to the low boiling point of today's gasoline. If you don't wanna lean over a hot engine and peer down the carb immediately after shutdown, before cold starting, spray some E-Z Start down the carb, and if it fires right away, then you know the extended cranking is a fuel problem.... Probably not a vacuum problem because it idles pretty good, so the only reason remaining I can think of if it isn't fuel-related, might be the ballast resistor isn't giving full 12 volts to the coil and skipping right to 5 volts at first start, causing weak starting spark. Good luck. P.S. I had mixed feelings about how quickly you fixed the Transmission. Good for you it was something "simple" but I was half-hoping to see a "disassemble" to see a good ol'-fashioned renew...Makes me wonder what is the actual percent of an Accumulator being the cause of "No-Reverse" on these things back in the good old days, vs the Band. Edit: AACK just saw someone else's comment. Are you sure that the choke is working? I don't see the dust disturbed around the wingnut on the air cleaner as a sign of checking to see if the choke plate is closing.
You lucked out, most no reverse problems on a TorqueFlite is a broken band. That requires transmission removal and disassembly. It also would have been easier if you got the valve body out of the way. If I remember right, you can move the drive shaft until the parking pawl falls into place and the rod will pull all the way out. You just have to do the opposite to put it back in place. Vaseline makes the seals slide in better and does not affect trans operation. The band breaks because no one ever adjusts the band. It gets more and more play until it finally breaks. It's the rear band that breaks because reverse pressure is over 150 psi. Normal pressure on a 727 is about 55 to 90 psi in all other ranges depending on the throttle linkage position. Make sure the throttle linkage is connected. A disconnected throttle linkage means really low shift points (mph) and low operating pressure regardless of load.
Spot on, Joe. Just turn the driveshaft a bit and the rod pops out attached to the valve body.. Ahhh, the memories (nightmares) come flooding back... lol
Beautiful old Chrysler Newport! Glad to see her back on the road and moving in all directions like she's supposed to especially with such a comparatively simple repair. How many us wish some of the auto box troubles we've experienced were so simple to fix? Of course, detail her and fix her rusty rocker and enjoy her. Nice job well done!
I had a wonderful grandma like many. Mine taught all of her grandchildren to play poker. She gave all the grandsons a carton of Winstons for their 16th birthday. Loved grandma what gem.

Very impressive. If that Newport was taken to a garage here in the States I would have been told, need a new transmission. I doubt they would have even bothered checking the problem. Great to learn something!

As I watched this, I was remembering when I was a kid back in the 70s. My dad had a mid 60s Chrysler with no reverse. Mom would park out where we didn't need to back up, but dad would pull in a normal spot. When we would leave, he would hpller "reverse crew!" and we would push that big old Chrysler out of its spot. Years later, he said he did it because he thought we liked it! Anyway, I wonder if all he needed was a danged old seal replaced!
Hey Scott two things I learned about chrysler carbs and even fords, is that they will sit and belch out black smoke and then spit and sput from fouled out plugs, if the choke vacuum pulloff is not working or not properly adjusted, I had this on my parents 75 torino station wagon and my friends moms Volare, auto chokes did not open fast enough without aid at first, a simple linkage adjustment was all it took and these two cars had been to mechanics who never figured it out. The second problem specific to 70s to 80s chrysler v8s was a dead or oil fouling cylinder usually by the firewall, probably from a choke problem over time, at that time you could get a hot plug or plug heater device, which would enable the car to run properly faster, by burning the oil deposits quicker, Also 18436572 which was firing order to chrysler v8s, but in general most v8s firing order is the same, it only differs by how you number the cylinders, and 4cyl firing is easy 1432 or 1234, in both cases it is the same but just the perspective you use
Good Stuff Scott... Deans greasy flips made me laugh because years ago I worked at a Civil Engineering Company with a Polish guy from Pittsburgh, I quickly got the cognomen Denski. It became Charlie & Denski ; funny stuff. "Nice flipski, Deanski". I have personally never been inside an automatic beyond the filter, so this was an adventure. I've seen others dive into the recesses of the automatic, but not me. Dan and his brother are talented guys. Old cop cars have great drivetrains. Yall (southern expression) make my Saturday's. Great old car. One of my first cars. Had the 383. Column shift. Was a bullet. And loved gasoline. Three things a man just doesn't understand. Women, automatic transmissions and women.
I LOVE this car, it reminds me of my grandfathers '72 New Yorker 4-dr HT he had when I was a kid. It was loaded with every option including the tnt 440 and was gold paint/gold vinyl roof and gold interior. I sure wish he had saved it for me when I was old enough to drive, it was an awesome car!
I had a 1989 Caprice once too it was a old cop car it had a 350 in it with a 400 turbo trans it was a fun car I even had to live in it a couple days and that sucked because those damn seats don't lean back at all LOL!!

my first mopar was 72 new port, cheapest one in finland. 4000e 400, 727 . no interior, k-memeber was split in two and paint was done over a grinder job. but it was fun to drink beer in.
1972 was a great year for road yachts. I had two of them, a Chrysler New Yorker 2 door ,white and saddle iterior; and a Delta 88 Royale convertible red, white interior & white top..

All these big cars brings back memories of 1988 cruising Whitehorse in my '78 Grand Marquis. "Ride Engineered" right above the glove box. You'd never spill your drink. Yukon potholes? What potholes? And with velour 5 way split bench seats it was better than driving your couch down the road.
Those lod Caprices moo like crazy when you floor them with that quadrajet 4 barrel on it. I had the same car. I found a roachclip with a evidence tag on it in the trunk! Lol!

Everyone knows someone who had a Newport, of course back then hydro poles went by like picket fences if you had a big Dodge thing. My cousin Heather who is five foot nothing had a '71, she spent more time running it in the fields than on the road. Car's gone now of course. Love Franker's reaction when you're washing the car and hey, you shaved! Almost seemed like a bad '70s edit, shaved, not shaved, shaved...

Am I the only one who spotted Pokey on the dashboard by the windshield? Pays to have friends with Chrysler knowledge. I have a '99 if he's interested in looking at it underneath. I remember one of these Newport's that my buddies dad had back in 1971 , it was a 69 or 70 2 dr had buckets seats and a 440 magnum 4 barrel all factory stock car ordered with the scat pack options ...........big car but man could that car burn rubber.........Lols
I had a 89 Caprice Classic Brougham. Just the 5 litre engine though. I liked it, but definitely not the best vehicle on winter roads. My buddy bought a new Caprice in 76. That was before GM downsized them. That was a beautiful car to ride in.
Another missed opportunity for a Blues Brothers quote for Dan's old car - 'It's got a cop motor, cop tyres, cop suspension,.... etc'. Great video and congrats on the Newport.

I really enjoyed this episode. I had a '72 Newport that I used to pull a car trailer w/ my '70 Duster drag car. It ran like Sh**. until I swapped the intake & carb from a 383 Road Runner. It then ran awesome. Tough cars and a solid "winter beater" for sure.
When mags AND whitewalls go together well. Man that looks good! If they were blackwalls, ho-hum, imho. Also, gotta love those unexpected simple fixes, so rewarding. Great video and great job you guys!
Cool old car. Flashbacks of my 73 Newport I had back in the day. Same color and top as yours. 400ci and a single glass pack. Was a great car. Only problem I ever had with it was the rear U-joint letting go at about 110 MPH. That was exciting!. Banged up the floor in the back seat but put a new one in and drove it for a few more years. Thanks for sharing.
Of course beer is out. That high fructose corn syrup with bubbles is responsible for the epidemic of diabetes and unhealthy overweight sickness of the North American population!! Soda pop is poison!

Ahh dude that Newport is sweet ! They are all but a memory in this part of Upstate New York rotted away by are constant use of rock salt !!!! I had as a first car a 1971 Chevy Impala custom 350ci love that ride but i was forever patching this or filling that going to swap meets looking for body parts not rotted away finally had to scrap her couldn't do anymore for her 😔
Love the videos always looking forward to a new one every week. This transmission video is awesome to me because everyone is always afraid of auto trans but a lot can be found by just dropping the pan and valve body don’t give up on a transmission till you do a full inspection keep up the good work

Jewish Man always though the GM Turboglide was a cool design. As I recall there was a version of the Jetaway called a “Slim Jim”..

I totally agree with this, but there is one exception. Have you ever tried to open up a 1985 Skoda 120 GLS "Signal light switch?, & Low Beam switch plus pushing it in was the horn". I did. The tiniest screws, springs, balls the size of Sesame seeds, all jumped simultaneously out of a switch no bigger than a pack of rothmans. They have never been found, lost forever in the carpet.

Love the Newport, reminds me of those 70's cop shows. The graat car chase scenes with those old boats rolling around corners with all the tyres screeching. Brilliant. Talking of which, gotta love old cop cars. You know, cop dirt, cop dents, cop rust. way better than any old civilian crap!
My grandpa was drafted in ww2.when he came home my grandma got him a carton of cigarettes for Christmas.she said open it.he told her he knew what cigarettes looked like.when she finally got him to open the carton she had saved all of his navy paychecks(that went to the wives).had never cashed any of them.worked all they would allow (Rosie the riveter) sold sandwiches to renters in their large house.etc..had enough to pay cash for 2 duplexes.hard working woman...

Growing up, the Newport always struck me as being very wide. I hope 7678 puts some food out there for the cat and lets him/her stay in the garage. I love the notion of the whole smoking segment. Being a collector, I will keep my eyes open for old wacky smoking items. My house is loaded with retro/vintage ash trays and match books. People always ask if I smoke when they know I don't. Dean needs to locate a Bill Blass Lincoln Mark V.
Hi Scott. I had the exact same problem with my first '57 Dodge in 1984. It would shift into first no problem but I had to rev it up to get it to engage reverse. Shops told me I would have to get a full rebuild but fortunately a mechanic friend of the family took a look and found that, like yours, it was a bad piston seal for the low/reverse band. He said that the broken seal allowed enough fluid to flow around the piston and not engage. When I revved the motor it would pump enough fluid to overwhelm the leak and move the piston, but it would also jolt the car into reverse. He scrounged around the shop and found a Ford seal that was close enough and put it back together. It drove perfectly the rest of the time I had it. So glad you saved yourself a needless rebuild. Thanks for a great episode and bringing back happy memories.

Based on the styling of 1960 Plymouth Fury and 1972 Chrysler Newport, in 12 short years the designers went from not seeing a curve they didn’t like in 1960 to just putting in the most subtle bends they could draw in 1972. Yet both cars are outstanding in their own way. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to enjoy them.

We all know that the Chrysler cars of this Era ALWAYS started, and that this extended cranking isn't normal for these old daily drivers unless out of gas, vapor-locked, Distributor Rotor not in place after Tune-up, or the Ballast Resistor was shot. Ha! New name for these Segments "...These Old Cars...",where you teach the youngsters of "Today" about the difference of these old relics from the Modern Marvels...
43:52 The "side benefit" to the extended cranking sound here is that we Oldsters get to hear that nostalgic Chrysler starter sound again after too many years. But we also know that, unlike the computerized cars of Today, the non-computerized cars of Yesteryear usually fire up before the first engine revolution because there is no Big Brother computer checking first for "all Systems Go" before granting fire. So even though like me, you probably don't like to monkey with something that ain't really broken, *for the sake of the Starter* (you Jonathan W. viewers know what I am talking about ;-), I would first check to see if the gas (or do you call it Petrol, eh?) after shutdown is leaking from the carburetor into the intake from a perished gasket, or perhaps the gasoline is percolating out of the carb after the shutdown heat-soaking due to the low boiling point of today's gasoline. If you don't wanna lean over a hot engine and peer down the carb immediately after shutdown, before cold starting, spray some E-Z Start down the carb, and if it fires right away, then you know the extended cranking is a fuel problem.... Probably not a vacuum problem because it idles pretty good, so the only reason remaining I can think of if it isn't fuel-related, might be the ballast resistor isn't giving full 12 volts to the coil and skipping right to 5 volts at first start, causing weak starting spark. Good luck.
P.S. I had mixed feelings about how quickly you fixed the Transmission. Good for you it was something "simple" but I was half-hoping to see a "disassemble" to see a good ol'-fashioned renew...Makes me wonder what is the actual percent of an Accumulator being the cause of "No-Reverse" on these things back in the good old days, vs the Band.
Edit: AACK just saw someone else's comment. Are you sure that the choke is working? I don't see the dust disturbed around the wingnut on the air cleaner as a sign of checking to see if the choke plate is closing.

You lucked out, most no reverse problems on a TorqueFlite is a broken band. That requires transmission removal and disassembly. It also would have been easier if you got the valve body out of the way. If I remember right, you can move the drive shaft until the parking pawl falls into place and the rod will pull all the way out. You just have to do the opposite to put it back in place. Vaseline makes the seals slide in better and does not affect trans operation.
The band breaks because no one ever adjusts the band. It gets more and more play until it finally breaks. It's the rear band that breaks because reverse pressure is over 150 psi. Normal pressure on a 727 is about 55 to 90 psi in all other ranges depending on the throttle linkage position. Make sure the throttle linkage is connected. A disconnected throttle linkage means really low shift points (mph) and low operating pressure regardless of load.
Spot on, Joe. Just turn the driveshaft a bit and the rod pops out attached to the valve body.. Ahhh, the memories (nightmares) come flooding back... lol
Beautiful old Chrysler Newport! Glad to see her back on the road and moving in all directions like she's supposed to especially with such a comparatively simple repair. How many us wish some of the auto box troubles we've experienced were so simple to fix? Of course, detail her and fix her rusty rocker and enjoy her. Nice job well done!

Very impressive. If that Newport was taken to a garage here in the States I would have been told, need a new transmission. I doubt they would have even bothered checking the problem.

As I watched this, I was remembering when I was a kid back in the 70s. My dad had a mid 60s Chrysler with no reverse. Mom would park out where we didn't need to back up, but dad would pull in a normal spot. When we would leave, he would hpller "reverse crew!" and we would push that big old Chrysler out of its spot.
Years later, he said he did it because he thought we liked it! Anyway, I wonder if all he needed was a danged old seal replaced!
Hey Scott two things I learned about chrysler carbs and even fords, is that they will sit and belch out black smoke and then spit and sput from fouled out plugs, if the choke vacuum pulloff is not working or not properly adjusted, I had this on my parents 75 torino station wagon and my friends moms Volare, auto chokes did not open fast enough without aid at first, a simple linkage adjustment was all it took and these two cars had been to mechanics who never figured it out. The second problem specific to 70s to 80s chrysler v8s was a dead or oil fouling cylinder usually by the firewall, probably from a choke problem over time, at that time you could get a hot plug or plug heater device, which would enable the car to run properly faster, by burning the oil deposits quicker,
Also 18436572 which was firing order to chrysler v8s, but in general most v8s firing order is the same, it only differs by how you number the cylinders, and 4cyl firing is easy 1432 or 1234, in both cases it is the same but just the perspective you use

Good Stuff Scott... Deans greasy flips made me laugh because years ago I worked at a Civil Engineering Company with a Polish guy from Pittsburgh, I quickly got the cognomen Denski. It became Charlie & Denski ; funny stuff. "Nice flipski, Deanski". I have personally never been inside an automatic beyond the filter, so this was an adventure. I've seen others dive into the recesses of the automatic, but not me. Dan and his brother are talented guys. Old cop cars have great drivetrains. Yall (southern expression) make my Saturday's. Great old car. One of my first cars. Had the 383. Column shift. Was a bullet. And loved gasoline. Three things a man just doesn't understand. Women, automatic transmissions and women.
I LOVE this car, it reminds me of my grandfathers '72 New Yorker 4-dr HT he had when I was a kid. It was loaded with every option including the tnt 440 and was gold paint/gold vinyl roof and gold interior. I sure wish he had saved it for me when I was old enough to drive, it was an awesome car!

I had a 1989 Caprice once too it was a old cop car it had a 350 in it with a 400 turbo trans it was a fun car I even had to live in it a couple days and that sucked because those damn seats don't lean back at all LOL!!

my first mopar was 72 new port, cheapest one in finland. 4000e 400, 727 . no interior, k-memeber was split in two and paint was done over a grinder job. but it was fun to drink beer in.

All these big cars brings back memories of 1988 cruising Whitehorse in my '78 Grand Marquis. "Ride Engineered" right above the glove box. You'd never spill your drink. Yukon potholes? What potholes? And with velour 5 way split bench seats it was better than driving your couch down the road.
Those lod Caprices moo like crazy when you floor them with that quadrajet 4 barrel on it. I had the same car. I found a roachclip with a evidence tag on it in the trunk! Lol!

Radio deletes are fascinating to me. The most recent one I've seen (not counting fleet vehicles or trucks) was a 1987 Nissan Sentra.
I have a 1995 Plymouth Aspen with an awesome radio delete panel. It has a picture of a radio on it!

My cousin Heather who is five foot nothing had a '71, she spent more time running it in the fields than on the road. Car's gone now of course. I had a 89 Caprice Classic Brougham. Just the 5 litre engine though. I liked it, but definitely not the best vehicle on winter roads. My buddy bought a new Caprice in 76. That was before GM downsized them. That was a beautiful car to ride in.

I really enjoyed this episode. I had a '72 Newport that I used to pull a car trailer w/ my '70 Duster drag car. It ran like Sh**. until I swapped the intake & carb from a 383 Road Runner. It then ran awesome. Tough cars and a solid "winter beater" for sure.
When mags AND whitewalls go together well. Man that looks good! If they were blackwalls, ho-hum, imho. Also, gotta love those unexpected simple fixes, so rewarding. Great video and great job you guys!

Cool old car. Flashbacks of my 73 Newport I had back in the day. Same color and top as yours. 400ci and a single glass pack. Was a great car. Only problem I ever had with it was the rear U-joint letting go at about 110 MPH. That was exciting!. Banged up the floor in the back seat but put a new one in and drove it for a few more years. Thanks for sharing.

Ahh dude that Newport is sweet ! They are all but a memory in this part of Upstate New York rotted away by are constant use of rock salt !!!! I had as a first car a 1971 Chevy Impala custom 350ci love that ride but i was forever patching this or filling that going to swap meets looking for body parts not rotted away finally had to scrap her couldn't do anymore for her 😔

Love the videos always looking forward to a new one every week. This transmission video is awesome to me because everyone is always afraid of auto trans but a lot can be found by just dropping the pan and valve body don’t give up on a transmission till you do a full inspection keep up the good work
