Corporate videos like this were made by most big companies in those days. They were self-promoting, because that was the idea of them. They were part of a company's marketing strategy and were designed to describe what a company did and what its strategy for growth was. They were sent to people that the company wanted to do business with, including suppliers, customers and investors. That was how it was done before the internet existed. These days, if we want to find out about a company, we can get the same kind of information from the company's website. As well as that, though, we can also use the internet to find out what other people think about the company too...

It was a real company - a big one - with real businesses in it, and that’s what the experts were commenting on. I wouldn’t blame them. Maxwell had been regarded with suspicion in the city some years before this, but the company’s financial performance over the intervening years had earned it a position in mainstream funds’ investment portfolios again. The acquisition of Macmillan was ambitious, but nobody at that time could possibly have imagined that the very public strategy of refinancing the purchase, by selling unwanted businesses, would lead to Maxwell deciding to ‘borrow’ illegally from the company’s pension funds. A lot of very sharp practice takes place unseen inside companies but fortunately it is never normally on that kind of scale.
