    Thank you. This is exactly what I needed to hear. Apparently a lot of people are having this exact issue. I just got my first ripe tomato two days ago. Thankfully I've been having cherry tomatoes for a couple of weeks already, but the bigger ones of all varieties haven't been ripening, which is understandable because I've kept them under 40% shade cloth due to the extreme heat. I'm taking a chance on the heat now because the shade cloth came off today. 😅

    I planted a hundred plants (Roma variety) here in Southeast Missouri I planted them on April 1st the tomatoes got huge and look really healthy and it was an optimum growing year not too hot not too cold Goldilocks but the strangest thing I've ever seen in my garden those tomatoes stayed green all the way up until Frost (about 6 months) still looking healthy but still a bright shade of green I lost half of them to frost before I decided to bring them in and put them in paper bags and when I done that within a week they got bright red and tasted awesome I thought I was going to have to take those green and make fried green tomatoes out of them which is pretty good with fried okra ...but I had already eat all my okra

    how did you read my mind? yeah I was having same questions for my pepper plants! as you told- its just the end of July.... I am going to have some more patience. Thank you

    Rock Springs, Wyoming here. One of the local industries here is mining sodium bicarbonate. Yes, the native soil is quite alkaline. I will probably need to work very hard to get the ph down.

    Just rewatched. So informative. Now that a cold snap hit zone 7 interrupting my vine ripening how about a video on growing tomatoes inside maybe hydroponicly.

    YES!!! I have a bell pepper plant that is supposed to be a Red Bell Pepper Plant. It's producing peppers just fine. Two of them are huge, and I'm playing a waiting game hoping they'll turn red. I don't want pests to get them. The smaller ones that I've picked green are good, although thin-walled. Went through a heat wave two weeks ago. In another heat wave now. Should I keep waiting, or cut my bell peppers green? Thank you Ashley!

      Yea so you can wait or cut it. But I encourage you to leave it so you can get that bright colour.

    Hi Ashley. I love your videos because they are so informative and helps understand how the plants work. I have a dilemma. I have two tomato plants (one for yellow slicing tomatoes the other for red slicing tomatoes). Since a few weeks I'm fighting blight. I cut off the leaves that were infected, sprayed a mixture of water, baking soda and soap on them but we had so much rain, humidity and lately, cooler nights (around 12-13 celsius) that it started to show on the main stem. I have many green tomatoes on them that are not ripening. I was thinking of cutting the head of the tomato plants, and removing the "suckers" to force the green tomatoes to ripen before the blight gets to the tomatoes (I lost all my tomatoes last year because of it... I didn't catch it early enough). May I ask for your thoughts on that or do you have another solution? I also started other kinds of tomatoes in an adjacent raised bed that I started late due to family matters I had to take care of and decided to try anyway to get "some" cherry, bumble bee and yellow pear shaped tomatoes as well as semi-determinant tomatoes for sauce, etc. The later ones started to produce little tomatoes but looks like the blight is starting to work it's way on them too (a little). I removed what I found and sprayed them yesterday evening and I always spray my gardening cisors with rubbing alcool between working on each plant not to spread it. Thanks for any advice you can give me to save some of my tomatoes.🙏

    Thanks, I have been feeling pretty and yet handsome these days!
    I have some 500 gram tomatoes on a couple of plants in my patch. I think the plants I picked up this Spring were mislabeled...I have never had a Manitoba Bush variety grow over 1.5 metres before.

    Wood Ash might help since it is good to use to boost the flowering and fruit a stage ..Maybe I am wrong but it does help the mature growth anyways..

      Make ketchup fertilizer tea with added red food coloring ..Who knows ,maybe it could work ...HAHA ,try anything once,,, what the hec ...A small amount will not kill it I assume. ..I just thought of that as a joke really but I am gonna try it on one of mine and they are 9 weeks old now with slow ripening.also....Yea I have organic ketchup also......../****

    I didn’t ask but must have been reading my mind. Tomatoes are dripping with fruit but taking their time to ripen. I noticed a Roma starting to turn pink today so perhaps they are on their way. Current heat wave supposed to break tonight so hopefully nice red tomatoes will follow (and maybe some female spaghetti squash will join them). Do you think deeper and more watering might help?

      Gardening In Canada - I’ll give that a try. On top of the constant high temperatures we’ve also been in near drought conditions so some extra water certainly won’t hurt. Still no sign of female spaghetti squash flowers despite 12’ of vine and constant male flowers.

    Ok! So since we r both in Zone 3 Sask I’m going to rely on you to say “it’s time to top those tomatoes”! I have a small bunch of slicers almost fully ripened😋😋. Since we are in for a heat wave this week- should I go pick em now?

    Any advice on watering? I know it is difficult to provide any guidance given the variables. Just curious what you do. The tomatoes I have harvested so far are all terrible - watery and not sweet at all. I am pretty sure I am over watering. A few weeks back we had a pretty good 'heat wave' (30C+ for many days in a row here in Southern Ontario) and around that time I noticed plants had fruit with BER. I assumed it was because I was not watering consistently, especially with the high temps. So, I increased my watering to try to combat the BER. BER is gone, but who knows why for sure. So now, I basically water on a routine. If the daily highs are 30C+, I water all my 20 gallon fabric pots daily and my beds every other day. If the highs are

    Even my tomato plant that was dwindled down to basically a "stem" a couple months ago, is now my largest tomato plant! It's absolutely unbelievable. However, (and I'm guessing it's because of the heat), I have a lot of tomatoes on several plants, but they are all green. Not sure if it's time to take them indoors, or if we should just leave them be. I have NEVER had tomato plants grow this tall and be this plentiful so hopefully, we don't lose them. Also, I have a question, is it possible to over water your plants when they are planted in the ground, or is that just specific to containers?

      It’s so hard to over water and outside plant in high summer. The exception is in heavy clay

      @@GardeningInCanada thank you ashley. I will take note of any areas that are more clay-like. Different areas of our yard seem to have different soil consistencies. We have just over half an acre of land - a good chunk of it, unused.

    This leads up to another possible experiment but what I was actually wondering was if I write been agreeing to meet on the counter is anything being lost any mention flavor little bit but is that a fact? And if you can ripened tomatoes off the vine why not just take them off as soon as they are the full size and then your plant can use it’s energy for other new growth..?

      You most definitely could. I’m not sure about the flavour though I would have to look at some research papers. It maybe less because there is no photosynthesis to increase the sugar content.
