Love it, Zuko right about one thing though. The war wouldn't have ended because the elements weren't in balance. Either way, Team Avatar needed a Firebender. Although, I'm sure if Zuko asked Mai to come with him she would've.

I love the bond between Zuko and May, they understand each other lot better than other couples in Avatar. I really hope we see more of them in next comics
He should've taken her with him in my opinion. Abandoning her like that was a jerk move. Them fighting together would've been romantic.
I think the reason why he left her is because he didn't want to drag her into his mess. Leaving the Fire Nation to join the Avatar was an act of high treason, especially for someone as high up as Zuko, the Prince of the Fire Nation, or Mai, the daughter of a nobleman (I forgot exactly what her father's title was, but I know he's at least semi-important). Zuko didn't want to burden Mai with his troubles, which is kinda sweet when you look at it from his perspective.
I do agree that what he did was a jerk move, but I think we should also realize that it was probably one of the more safer routes to go with. If he did tell her in person and asked her to join him, there was a chance that she would rat him out before he got the chance to leave.
Although it's clear to see that that wouldn't happen (especially with the events of The Boiling Rock episodes proving that Mai's love for Zuko was greater than her loyalty to Azula and the Fire Nation), Zuko didn't want to take the risk, which resulted in his poor decision.

And she commits high treason anyway by taking out those guards and starting a fight Azula, the Fire Nation Princess. If not for Ty Lee, she would've been killed.
And in finishing, after Azula was down (The only real threat there) I still and will always believe those two could've beat those weak a$$ guards and escaped.

I entirely agree with your statement. It would have been so cool to see Mai and Zuko fight side by side with the rest of the Gaang. However, Zuko couldn't have ever known how Mai would react to his treason, and he didn't want to burden her with his decision. That's all I'm trying to say, and I hope we can find some sort of middle-ground agreement (which should be easy, since it's not like we are on total opposite sides of an argument).
