  • ESPN NBA draft analyst Mike Schmitz analyzes the strengths and weaknesses of former Texas Tech guard Jarrett Culver. Schmitz says Culver shares similar physical attributes with the Nets’ Caris LeVert. Schmitz projects Culver as a high-floor prospect who will develop into a quality NBA starter early in his career thanks to his size, sound defense and triple-threat scoring.

The key for him is his Jump shot. Because he is a good but not great athlete he will run into better athletes on a semi regular basis and struggle to create against them mightily. So he will be really up and down depending on his match up until he gets a jump shot. However once he does get a jump shot he will be very good on a regular basis. Maybe even a Scottie Pippen second fiddle kind of good. But right now he's going to struggle.

Bro, Scottie was second fiddle to MJ but after that, he was the BEST SF of his generation. Pippen was 6'8 with a 7'3 inch wingspan and to show you how freakishly long he was Giannis has also had a 7'3 inch wingspan at 6'11. So Pippen's length was one of te greatest assets anybody has ever had. Pippen also could jump from the free-throw line, he could play both guards and SF and on defense, he was the best ever at his position. To go along with the fact the guy could get you 8 boards and 8 dimes and score 20 points the only comparison in today's game would be Kawhi or Giannis but even then their IQ isn't as high as Scottie's. I think Culver can be really good but I don't see future NBA legend.

4.6 assists per 40 minutes, 6.7 FTAs per 40 minutes, ahead of RJ Barrett. 7th in usage rate. 66th percentile in finishing at the rim while taking over 195 shots at the rim. 50th percentile on pull-ups. 7.8 rebounds per 40 minutes. 34th percentile on catch & shoot (yikes!).
That he is comfortable on the post, facing up on the wing, getting to the rim & hitting pull-up js (though he can be better) and can pass from all areas too... He reminds me of Utah Gordon Hayward or Jimmy Butler or Caris LeVert or Andre Iguodala if his shooting doesn't become consistent. Lots of guys have improved their shot once they've gotten in the NBA. He'll get stronger too w/NBA training. The lack of burst isn't ideal but think he's got enough change of speed in his bag & size & playmaking to compensate for it. The tools he does have are everything the NBA is looking for. He's my number 4 prospect, personally, behind only Zion/Ja/RJ.

Lakers need RELIABLE 3-POINT SHOOTERS. 😂😂😂
You have 10-year NBA veterans that are not RELIABLE at 3-pointers.
Steph Curry, Houston Rockets, & Damian Lillard's use of 3-pointers has changed the NBA forever.
3-point shooting is skill that can elevate a rookie over 10-year NBA veterans. 😂😂😂
Lebron James is not going to let any teammate be the Floor General, but himself = all other Lakers are forced to play OFF-THE-BALL , no matter what your UCLA stats say.
Laker fanbase still trying to judge Lonzo Ball by what he did as an ON-THE-BALL point guard = UNREALISTIC.
If you are OFF-THE-BALL you are a 3-point SHOOTER at the 1-spot.
Lakers are different than their fanbase.

      @cjwrench07 5 років тому +1

DeAndre Page If you had the skills of LeBron James, and especially the mind of LeBron James. You would need people to earn your trust to take over ball handling duties too. But, he’s more than willing to let shot creators do their thing and shine on their own. Kuzma, DWade, Kyrie, and every guy on the national teams, they all had nothing but praise for LeBron’s willingness to just let them dribble and create their own shot, while he took care of the team’s spot up shooters / 3&D guys.
LaLonzo was waaay to prone to just tossing a ball up the court fast instead of actually trying to create a usable play. He lead the league in up passes into bad mismatches 1v2, 2v3, and 1-2v4. Lalonzo needs to go to Phoenix, where they just want to run the ball as fast as possible, because they have no real catch-and-shoot threats from outside, in the half court.
Polinka needs to prove himself this year, and Kobe is really getting involved in the team’s development. Expect a proper supporting cast around LeBron next year. And not all the basket cases that Magic could Sign, like this year (Rondo, Beasley, Lance, McGhee). Or trade away great prospects(Zubac), just to get rid of one of your basket cases(Beasley) who threatened/mimed to shoot the coach in an argument at practice.
The Lakers will likely get AD, in exchange for the 4th pick and some young guys. Setting up LAL with a 25-12 big man, who can shoot the 3, for the next decade, and can be built around once LeBron retires. They will also likely get a shot creator like Jimmy Buckets, and/or Kemba Walker. Fill out the bench with 3&D guys and now your a contender in the western western Conference.
Especially if KD re-signs in GS, and they don’t have any real money to rebuild their bench, like they REALLY need to do. Or, enough to re-sign Draymond next summer, who’s expecting a huge increase, for sacrificing his pay during the past few years, so they could pay clay and KD these past 2 years.

Not freaking looking 3 years into the future.
A 3-point specialist is what Lebron James needs to lead the Lakers to the Western Conference.

He shot 34% career from deep. You rather select a guy who shot well over 5 games, is a guaranteed defensive liability, turnover prone, poor decision maker, poor handler in traffic and so forth.
People are blinded by steph curry. The lakers absolutely do not need another defensive liability to pair with LeBron. Pair long shooters who can defend or at least shooters who have j kidd/josh hart size and defensive utility.
Garland is a comfortable shooter and thats great but lebron aint klay and the lakers need defenders to make up for lebrons no defense playin, complaining ass.
Not saying i wouldnt pick garland but im not seeing workouts to compare. If you look at kyrie, who shot 40% from deep, has far better handles, better finisher, experienced, a title, ect....and he has serious troubles against long defenders to the point where everyone finally knows it.
For all those infatuated with curry, watch his defense, then take away klay. What the lakers need is klay....or to trade lebron.
The best lead guard option the lakers have is BI. He can see over defenses and has the length to give kyrie nightmares and switch anything. You put a liability there and fouls pile up.

@@TheFreshPeddler And the Lakers need a high usg% guy that can't shoot with poor shot selection and only shot worse as the tournament went along? 34% is below average by the way. He has to adjust his game entirely with the Lakers and won't be nearly as effective here. Without shooting, there aren't any slashing lanes for him to thrive. Lakers do not need to trade LeBron either, what the hell are you talking about? Garland is also arguably the best ball handler in this draft class, foh. Garland turnover it over more by 0.3 than Culver did.

    • @TheFreshPeddler
      @TheFreshPeddler 5 років тому +1

@@michaelmason7687 - every pick at #4 is likely going to be high usage players. His "usage" with the ball is far better in traffic btw. If you understood basketball, you would know that poor handles in traffic and poor pg skills such as not probing, picking up dribble, ect will affect "usage".
Garlands usage next to lebron will be? Spot up shooter? You think tall players who can defend cant space the floor? Garland will need to be a high usage guard, thats where his assets are but he has a long ways to go and a lot of minutes required to fuck up and learn. If he survives the pinball machine of screens hes going to face.
Vogel is absolutely against fouling all the time. Put lebron and a defensive liability together and thats what will happen.
Culver can do just about everything. At best he is better and at worst he is better. The best garland can be is a shooter that plays zero defense. I cannot emphasize enough how rough his pg skills are.
Garlands comfort with shooting is tantalizing yes but his faults are huge and if his shot doesnt fall against better, longer defenders at 47%...which it wont, what will his role be.
This kid needs a lot of time. The lakers aren't in that business these days.
Again, not saying i wouldnt pick him after seeing all involved in the gym but i certainly wouldn't be here pretending that he doesnt have more downsides than upsides...as tantalizing as they may be
Seriously, watch kyrie, who is worlds better than garland right now, shortest dribble in the league, a 40% shooter from three for an entire fucking season... and still hasn't figured out how to consistently beat larger defenders when it matters.
Culver could be one of the best two way players in the league one day, but garland will always be a liability and like ive said LeBron aint klay.
If it were just the size and he had the pg skills, maybe. This kid is very rough though. Again, i havent ruled him out but people who act like he is the smart choice tend to make terrible arguments and you are no different.
Won't likely matter. This kid doesnt fit the timeline and the pick will probably be traded anyways.

Lakers fans already witnessed the Kobe Bryant farewell tour. Hopefully they can get this culture overhaul and rebuild underway. Drafting Culver and trading lebron James would expedient the process. Last thing the Lakers need is a lebron James farewell tour and to be in the lottery again. If lebron James truly cared about winning he would of taken less money and could of teamed up with a couple of stars. His contract will be cancer next season.
