Ashden Awards: Ujamaa Community Resource Team, nurturing land rights in Tanzania

Meet Ujamaa Community Resource Team (UCRT) - winner of the 2024 Ashden Award for Natural Climate Solutions.
UCRT has helped more than 120 Indigenous communities in rural Tanzania secure the rights to their land, manage it, and create a sustainable living from it.
This land is home for hundreds of thousands of people - and its biodiversity protects us all from climate change. But the spread of towns and cities, destructive industries, and growing extreme weather linked to climate change all put that land at risk.
UCRT creates solutions hand-in-hand with local people. It helps them win and certify collective land rights, resolve conflict between communities, and learn land management skills. UCRT also helps people plan land use together, defend nature, and launch new sustainable businesses and money making activities. And it supports women to take on leadership roles.
