As crackers burst through Chennai City on Diwali, I embarked on a new journey to Tirunelveli, the town of Nellaiappar & Halwa, except it was on one of the unique trains of Southern Railways. The Tambaram - Sengottai Triweekly is among the few trains to take the unelectrified route via Thiruvarur - Karaikkudi. While I have travelled in this route during its MG hay days, this was going to be my first journey post Gauge Conversion. It is also the only unelectrified section left in Tamil Nadu, along with the spur from Tiruturaipoondi to Vedaranyam. While Madurai - Bodi and Sengottai - Kollam are still having diesel trains, electrification is happening at a rapid pace and it won't be long before electrics invade.
The journey began with some drama, as the RPM WAP7 scheduled to haul our train from Tambaram to Thiruvarur was deemed "failed" before the scheduled departure time. A back up WAP1, which had been lying at Tambaram for as long as most chennai Railfans could remember, was brought up to life (Read Thor saying "I am still worthy") and tasked with hauling the train.
Precious minutes lost, this meant we trail the Karaikkal bound Kamban Express, which has halts at every palmyra tree, while our train is mostly nonstop along the Delta Mainline.

Fabulous Run. But sad fact is no longer these alcos are on mainline duty after mar 24 and no daily train either day or night in Tvr Karaikudi route till date. SR has fear of antagonizing the revenue of monopoly trains i.e. Cholan in day and RMM in night as well as Pallavan and Sethu in chord at Karaikudi. Even they have till date no proposal for daily run of exp to chennai or any other place between Tvr TPD Pkt Karaikudi route. Thanks

Is the train stopped at manamadurai junction for technical halt
I'm not sure why it stops. It's not mentioned as a technical halt, but the train stops there almost on every run. Probably has something to do with the interlocking.

Why technical halt? There's no crew change, this train has no food loading, what other reason can there be for a technical halt?

Madurai-Manamadurai-Virudhunagar Section Comes Under DEN/Central Engineering Division of Madurai Division.
Under Indian Railways Norms the DEN Division Interchange Point Junction Railway Station's Station Master must Provide Caution Order to LP/ALP for Section Details of Other DEN Division
In Past Days, MAS-MDU Duronto Express also Skipped Karur but its Stopped for Caution Order because Karur Jn is DEN Divisions Interchangeable area in Salem Division. After Conversion of Duronto Express to Normal AC Express, Karur Jn got Commercial Stoppage
I can guarantee that Duronto didn't always stop. You can see in my video on board Duronto when it skipped Karur Jn 🙂
However, I can understand that they do need to give the caution orders for MNM VPT section
