Hell yes, more Oranssi Pazuzu on the channel! Gotta love it. Updates to follow once I've watched the thing :) E: I think you hit the nail on the head with your description of the ever evolving hedge maze. This band is masterful at creating creepy atmosphere with their soundscape. Also pleasantly surprised you took the time to analyze the lyrics even if they're in Finnish. Here's my attempt on a translation: The flies flicker from the darkness As acid colors into the void I see ghosts in the stream With jellyfish on their faces Facing the bottom I make out an escape hatch In the catharsis of timerain Mind ruptures into saturation Part of me can't keep up Figures materializes from the mist They gesture to step through the gate The time ripples The time radiates I cannot move
After the last Oranssi Pazuzu track I downloaded their discography though I haven't gotten around to it yet; this will inspire me to get to them quicker. Just love their combination of psychedelia and black metal. It just sounds so weird and unique. On this track I especially appreciate how the track kept subtly morphing with minor changes over other more static elements. Feels like watching the musical equivalent of natural evolution! Also dig how the production has that psychedelia fuzz to it without being the white noise wall-of-sound that BM often ends up as.
The timing the drummer gives to every track is mind blowing. If you ever get to see them live, it almost looks like the drummers is playing a different song in his head. Can even watch him singing along with a song that definitely isn't the one the rest of the band is playing.
Oranssi Pazuzu remind me of “blackened post-metal” in the sense that they use repetition and layering to create more complex sound without much movement. They really capture the psychedelic aspect with their tone, irregular rhythms, and vocals imo.
Speaking of the hedge maze and the overall idea of things looping and constantly evolving, you should definitely react to "Vasemman käden hierarkia" by Oranssi Pazuzu!
This album had to grow on me the first time I heard it after really liking their previous albums and pre-ordering this one, but over time it has probably become my favourite album by them. I have generally seen them mentioned as Psychedelic Black Metal, but their last 2 albums (this one is their second to last) have become way more Psychedelic than the previous ones. These last 2 sound very much like a nightmare to me, but in a good way, I'm not even sure why they work as well for me as they do. Their last album has dropped the Black Metal influence even more and hasn't 100% grown on me yet, but I probably haven't listened to it enough and I certainly like what I have heard of it. I have been diving into completely different music the last couple of years after being somewhat stuck listening to the same bands for a while, but just like Codexnecro mentioned, I am probably going this one an other spin very soon. I do always enjoy coming back to their albums, they are pretty unique and always an interesting listen. Oranssi Pazuzu also have a spin-off band/project called "Waste Of Space Orchestra" together with Finish Psychedelic Drone Doom Metal band "Dark Buddha Rising" which is also great. It actually has all 10 members of both bands, so some instruments are doubled up, they have 2 drummers and 2 bassists for example.
I've always thought Oranssi Pazuzu would make a good soundtrack for a 60's-70's style horror film. Their music reminds me of a heavier, more metal version of what Goblin did with Suspiria.
It's been soooo long but I gotta watch it again now. I might skip Cube Zero though -- I don't remember that one being any better than a SyFy original film.
I heard the trance genre described as small, imperceptible changes lead to you being in a completely different place when the song ends than when it began despite never really noticing the individual changes. This song is sort of the polar opposite of that; everything changes, but nothing changes.
Oranssi Pazuzu is so masterful at creating moods and just sticking with them. Some might think it's boring because of the repetition and minor changes but for me personally they're completely captivating and hypnotizing. Love all their work but especially the two most recent albums. Thanks for the reaction!
2016 was a very good year in metal, lots of great releases and this is absolutely one of them, its drony and repetitive but not in a grating way and i remember having to do some menial repetitive tasks and putting this album on repeat made me enter a kind of state where i didn't mind it at all, i could still do the thing but at the same time kinda get lost in the flow of the music
I've always found myself more attracted to albums as opposed to songs, ESPECIALLY in black metal and other extreme metal music types, but this song in particular has been a huge favourite of mine for a number of years. Me n the homies went out mushroom picking on my mate's property one time, and as we were eating them and coming up I slipped on my headphones and completely lost myself in the trance-like rhythms and riffs. My friends were... not so keen :~) Anyway, sick to see you reacting to a cool band, and super refreshing to watch someone react to something without feeling like they have to say "I loved this song so much!!!" Hope you have a good one!
Love to see Oranssi Pazuzu on your channel again!

LOST IN A HEDGE MAZE! I absolutely love this album. It’s an incredible combo of genres.
Powerful review!

That's what I like to call: the King Crimson pattern hahahaha.

Yes! Especially its live versions are dynamite!

Man, Cube is such a throwback, haven't watched that in ages!

That last drum beat is like a sigh, after the 5 minutes of 5 and the hedgemaze part
