"Jerking off the universe is perhaps what all philosophy, all abstract thought is about: an intense, and not very sociable pleasure, which has to be repeated again and again." What a fantastic quote. I think I'll use this in daily life. Anyways, good review. You nailed it, once again.
Love Sontag. Her book Regarding the Pain of Others was my introduction to her. IF you haven't read that one, I recommend it. I look forward to checking this one out.
Consider an apocalyptic statement: nothing is true, everything is permitted. Hasaan I Sabah, the old man of the mountain. Not to be interpreted as an invitation to all manner of unrestrained and destructive behaviour, that would be a minor episode which would run its course. Everything is permitted /because/ nothing is true. It is all make-believe; illusion, dream, art. When art leaves the frame and the written word leaves the page, not merely the physical frame and page, but the frames and pages of assigned categories. A basic disruption of reality occurs. The literal realisation of art. Success will write "apocalypse" across the sky. The artist aims for a miracle. The painter wills his pictures to move off the canvas with a separate life. Movement outside of the picture and one rip in the fabric is all it takes for pandemonium to break through.
1. Now want to read her as soon as possible 2. Loved the impersonation 3. About Bruno Dumont, whose work I adore, have you seen Camille Claudel 1915 ? Jeez, it is SO good. And Juliette Binoche is a breathtaking Camille Claudel in her asylum days. Thanks for your videos, as always.
Yes, it's another one, that one zooms in on the days she spent in the asylum where she was sent to (www.imdb.com/title/tt2018086/). But of course, I agree on Isabelle Adjani being amazing :)
One thing that I think would be actually really great would be, as the episodes get longer (and I don't mean to shove words down your thought, but I think that you might like to speak longer about some of the works) is to make a Better than Food: Book Reviews podcast.
Hello everyone, firstly I would like to say how much I enjoyed and took this video. I am about to undertake an essay for my final year of an Egnlish Literature degree entitled ,‘In place of a hermeneutics we need an erotics of art’ (Susan Sontag, ‘Against Interpretation’). What is the critical value of Sontag’s statement? It would be immeasurably helpful for any ideas you could extend and give me, thank you
Better Than Food: Book Reviews Probably 4chan trolls or something, don't sweat it man, your videos are excellent are you're such a cool dude. I'm 19 and you kind of make me think of the kind of person I'll be in my 20s hahaha
+Better Than Food: Book Reviews Perhaps they disliked your video, not because of the reviews quality, but because they believed the book to anti-religious.
[disclaimer: old ass vid] Wow absolutely nothing of substance was said here; just a lot of gushing about the "style" and how it influenced you "real nicely". Not a word about the arguments, or why you agree with them, just "ooooooh the style" lmao its an essay bro, its making an argument, could you maybe engage with that a little? Also this is hilariously funny, because you ARE actually living up to her view, and interpreting her work the way she thinks art should be interpreted - as an immediate experience, eg. how does it make you feeeel maaan - and that's so funny because she wrote essays, which are explicitly these argumentative works of writing that do all the things she says art shouldn't do, and then people like you come along and interpret her statements as if they're collections of freeform interpretive slam poetry. So many levels of irony (its only two but it feels like a lot)
thank you for explaining sontag's essay, on style. it's one of the essays, along with against interpretation, that i found very challenging to understand on the first read.
So many books to buy and this seems to be a book that leads one down a rabbit hole of other works. If only I could get some of that damn paper people value so much. If only I could finish a damn story. Or get back into the machine earning a paycheck the dull way.
i greatly enjoy your reviews, kudos. you need a paintingbehind you at that blank square space above your bed. I'm an artist, painter, so can offer you one at a fair price. But I digress, one of my fave books is Basho Matsuo's book of haiku "On Love & Barley" .. transcendental infinity. the best parts of your reviews is when you suddenly go off an a tangent, love it! Ciao.
I know she used to love to hang out socially with William Burroughs during the 70s I can certainly understand why: Burroughs was one of those most rare writers where every word / thought was all his own.
I'm sure at the moment you want to focus on this channel and develop it further, but have you thought about starting another channel where you review movies/music? Or food. Better Than Books: Food Reviews.
I agree deltrig2113. You should expand into other forms of narratives, reviewing TV shows and movies. I think it would be a good idea, you have a talent for seeing things from another angle.
I can't stand people like Sontag. The school of thought from which she emerged is no longer relevant in any way in 2020, if it ever was relevant and not mere intellectual masturbatory texts. Reminds me of a guy I used to know in Montréal who wrote papers no one read analyzing different degrees of the soprano voice of Orpheus...
@@AminTheMystic You comment can be summed as "You're dumb", to which I would respond : you are just fan of Sontag and your worldview as far as her work is concerned is, at best, clouded by your bias. Santé !
Thomas Franche Nope. My comment is summed up as 'You are a Liar'. You've never read Sontag, you haven't the foggiest. Your type just pretend. But you are a rather dumb liar, certainly not smart . Sánte Bánte!
@@AminTheMystic lol, so basically your point is that since I don't like her world view and think she's over rated, that means that I have never read her, because if I HAD read her, I would worship her like you seem to do ?
🇲🇱📚you never read Sontag .... you’re just on the band wagon...you’re not saying anything that provides insight into the ideas that she try to explain or .....stop fronting bro... have the guts to do the research and provide us more information.....try to at least read the blurb.......📚🇲🇱

But...It has to wait for now.
I agree. I'm glad you don't do a list. Thank you for another video! Almost finished with the first volume of My Struggle.
Love your Matthew Mcconaughey impression.
Great review :)
+mementomori He called me once out of the blue - no joke - I should tell that story one day.

I was waiting for you to review some Susan Sontag. I always felt I want to pick her up and never did, but after this video I certainly will!
+BetweenLinesAndLife She's just...so damn good.
Speaking of literary critics/commentators, have you read Roland Barthes?
+EinSophistry Absolutely - Great mind. Will make an appearance.
If you you ever get the time, Feast of the Goat, The Man Who Loved Children, and Symphony for the City of the Dead would be some good reviews.
Cliff don't ever do list videos, tag videos, book haul videos or wrap up videos. Those are offenses on a par with someone not having books.
+Andy McKinney No worries Mr. Mckinney! Never!!
+Better Than Food: Book Reviews Good man. We say no to conformity and mediocrity on this channel. 😉
Did a list kick your dog?
Sarah Kane - Anna Kavan, if you have the wish, review them...it should be a nice challenge.
thank you for explaining sontag's essay, on style. it's one of the essays, along with against interpretation, that i found very challenging to understand on the first read.
+James Edwards Yes! Not a bad thing, but she's very sharp. Worth a lot of rereads.
+Better Than Food: Book Reviews have you read under the sign of saturn? that's my favourite of her essay collections!
Oh, I definitely want to read this one!
+FromTheDustyBookshelf You must!
a sontag was also a type of knitted chest wrap type of shawl worn by women during the 1800's :)
"Penultimate" means "second to last"
Thank you
isnt it Always a nice day in L.A?i live in U.K.great video.

thanks Cliff.keep the vids coming :-)

Sontag looked exactly like Joe Perry, in the 90s. Prove me wrong.
You should read Keeping An Eye Open by Julian Barnes
I know she used to love to hang out socially with William Burroughs during the 70s

+deltrig2113 All will expand in time, I swear to you. Yes, a ways away but down the road...Possibly music.

Most of the excerpts you read out went in one ear and out the other. Words are hard.
+severalgecko Watch again!
P.S. the ladies should now be happy that you reviewed a female author now. 😉
it's "zontag " not "sontag" and it means Sunday in German
