H/H match update and preview of the week ahead: ... This is week 171 of our favorite classic game show (291 will be the final week). These episodes were taped on October 31, 1976, and they originally aired in early December of 1976. *This week every panelist has scored at least one H/H match!* So we have our three stalwart regulars all in their places with bright, shiny faces, and they are joined by: ~~~Semi-regular Betty White, who returns after three weeks off. This is her 43rd week (of 75). She's earned a 50% accuracy score matching on the head-to-head questions so far. ~~~Loretta Switt, who was a frequent panelist in the early days of the program, is back for the first time since episodes 236-240! This is now her ninth visit (she'll appear a total of 11 weeks). Loretta has matched 1 out of 2 attempts at the head-to-head. ~~~And finally, George Kennedy is back! This is his third week (of 5). George was selected for the H/H twice in his debut week and matched both times. Last week King Richard reigned supreme in the H/H Match Segment for the fourth consecutive week, to the exclusion of every other panelist. Reviewing the past 26 weeks, Richard has played 105 times. Everyone else combined played 23 times. (Brett had 8 opportunities, Charles 7, Fannie 6, Betty 1, and Lynn Deerfield 1.) Percentage-wise, Richard played an amazing 82.0% of the time over those past 26 weeks, despite underperforming when it comes to actually matching the contestants. I sound like a broken record (a 1976 expression), but I'd love to see a little variety in the head-to-head segment this week. (Richard has played every single question since episode 822, except the one that Charles played and matched in 830.) And why wouldn't a smart contestant choose someone else? George has matched 100% of his (two) questions, Charles 51.7%, Betty 50%, Loretta 50% (of two), Richard 40.9177%, and Brett 40.9090%. One explanation is simply the myth that Richard is "the best" at the head-to-head. I can understand that, given that the contestants would have no way of keeping track of the panelists' actual performance, short of watching every single episode since the start of the series and tracking the outcome of every single H/H question. (Something I can do thanks to the Internet and UA-cam and MatchGameProductions, but that was obviously impossible back then.) Anyway, at the top of my wish list this week is for George to score his third match and "graduate" to the big leader board. No one has cracked that threshold for ages now. (Joyce most recently did it back before episode 500, but I unfortunately didn't make a note of the date.) I'd like to see Loretta play again, and of course Betty. I'd also like to see Brett play again - win or lose, she'd put some distance between her score and Richard's - the two have been too close for far too long, flipping back and forth over and over with Richard's wins and losses recently. Whatever happens, we can count on Match Game providing a healthy dose of ___________ this week! ~~~Today's action: We ended the last program on a sort of cliffhanger. A brand-new champion had just won $100 on the audience match with Fannie's suggestion, but time ran out before the head-to-head. So now, we get to see who she'll choose for a shot at $1,000. With the weekly change in panelists, Fannie isn't an option. I imagine she'll default to Richard, even though he's missed his last four attempts... Wait, what? I'm shocked! (In a good way.) It's Betty! This will be her 37th attempt overall and her first time since 733 (no match). Before that, she played in 718 (match) and 643 and 644 (both matches). Whatever the outcome today, it will once again break the long-standing off-an-on tie between her and Fannie... Today's (first) H/H question: "Organ _______ " (My first thought is organ grinder. Second thought is organ donor, but I can't recall how familiar that expression was back then.) Betty decides fairly quickly, but she seems lukewarm on her response. The contestant's mind went the same direction as mine did. "Grinder," she says. Betty's eyes widened, but her expression seems to indicate she didn't match... In fact, Betty wrote "Music." No match this time. ~~~ And we manage to complete another game. Our champion was defeated after only one win, and goes home with $200. Our new champion (in her matching "Match Game" colors) prepares to face the Super-Match. Today's audience match question: "________ Young" (My thoughts: Robert, Forever, Brigham) The celebs: Richard (Robert), Betty (Too), Charles (Forever and Loretta -- he sneaks two suggestions in) The choice: Robert The answers: Neil, Loretta, Robert Now we get to see who our new champion picks! It's back to Richard. He has missed his last four questions, so he's on a bit of an unlucky streak. Looking back a bit further, Richard has matched 16 of his 46 most recent attempts (34.8%). Today's (second) H/H question: "Record _______ " (Easy. Record player. That sounds like the most common thing to say in 1976. We should get a match this time!) Maybe it's harder than I thought. Instead of writing, Richard is looking to Betty for inspiration. Once again, the contestant's mind went the same direction as mine did. "Player," she says, receiving a boisterous round of applause. But as we saw earlier today, matching me is no guarantee of matching the star. Richard looks like he didn't match. Oh, no, he wrote "Album." -- That's not awful, but the contestant had the better answer. No match today. And for the umpteenth time, Richard falls back below Brett in overall accuracy. I am not sure you could really say he was official DJ, Rayburn and Finch were a comedy radio team who took a piece of music and played so many times that he became a hit. Granted I need to go back and reread TMGR again. Not to mention I don't think he was into Rock and Roll music .
Captains and Commanders are a dime a dozen in that area. Hell, John Poindexter was my neighbor in the 70s in a very modest neighborhood closer to the Rockville city limits.
I did not expect that women were scarce in that part of the country, and that they came up with animals. I thought the answer was going to be sister or cousin.
