Just to add to how unpredictable the playoffs are, the Mavs almost won when they were down 31 at one point… crazy
Congrats Luka 🤣
They even got the lead at one point halfway through the fourth quarter 😮!
All of their games were Clippers vs refs
"Almost won" so it was a fake comeback and they still ended up losing? Congrats to the Mavs 🥳 🥳
and yet, they lost, so not really that unpredictable

Game designer here. Great vid but what is happening to NBA can't be called rubberbanding. The 3-pts swings can happen equally for both teams, they do not favor the losing team. There is no rule connection between being the losing team and going on a hot streak. If it were rubberbanding we would actually see much more close games. What we actually see is bigger discrepancies caused by teams relying more on a strategy that is higher in risk to reward ratio.
It is true. but honestly does not need a game designer to understand that difference 😄

Just gotta remember 1 thing regarding the playoffs in any sport, “That’s why they play the games”. You work with stellar teams with a VERY small number of games compared to the regular season and all it takes is 1 bad run of loses and bam the predicted playoff picture gets lit on fire.
The unpredictability hides a more important theme - the global NBA pool is so large and talented that any G - leaguer can turn into Steph or Kyrie on a good night. You can't predict what happens if you load each scenario with excessive talent. When I was a kid in the '50's you always knew the Celtics would win because the other teams had less talent and no system. There weren't any Serbians, Slovenians, Greeks and Lithuanians to gum up the laws of chance in my day.

The fact that we love Jimmy goes to show that a good essay is all about presentation. He develops a clear thesis, presents arguments, and provides evidence for each, before pulling it all together with a conclusion. Brilliant.
You mean my English teacher wasn't lying to me in high school?
I've always been curious in this 3-point-shooting NBA if there is an additional advantage to shooting threes: the offensive rebounds. Given that the floor is more spaced and the bounce off the missed shot goes farther/higher, I've wondered if just looking at 3pt% doesn't convey the whole advantage if the offense gains an advantage on offensive rebounds, too.
Thanks for the great video.

Jxmy I've been a subscriber for a minute and this post was by far one of your most interesting and well done. You had me at the graph and classical music interlude. My jaw dropped at the breakdown with the three graphs showing the impact of the 3 pointer on game outcome over the years. Masterful.
Ain’t no way bro related Mario Kart to the NBA 💀
Yeah that was a bit of a stretch
I mean it's something
@@PreacherJenkinsI mean it’s simply teaching a concept in a funny way. Comparing 3P variance and the wild swings in games to Mario Kart. I highly doubt 95% of people watching this knew what the rubber band effect meant before this. Obviously there’s no built in one in the NBA, (in before conspiracy theorists) but the 3 ball can be the great equalizer, no lead is safe, etc.
@@BOnYTB exactly 💯
What's wrong with that, most people have played Mario Kart so he knew people would understand it

That’s hell
🤣🤣 bro you caught me w this one

I think it's a coaching problem. Coaches don't change their game plan depending on their lead, compounding on the volatility. If, for instance, a team makes a lot of 3s early on, building up a 20 point lead, the team keeps chucking 3s. That means the other team only needs your team to miss 6 3s and them to make 6 3s and it's a 2 point game. However, if instead the team that built up a 20 point lead focused on scoring high efficiency 2s after building up the lead, then that would put the pressure on the other team. At that point, the other team needs to make 20 more 3s than you make 2s to catch up, which is very unlikely. Sprinkle in the fact that if you start focusing on 2s, the other team is gonna be less focused on defending 3s against you, making your 3s easier, and the lead becomes a lot more insurmountable. If I was coaching and my team was up 20, I'd bench anyone taking a 3 unless they were wide open and had around 40% 3PT percentage.
Very simple yet awesome observation/analysis!
It really depends. There might be a reason why you're making 3's. Trying for 2's might not be easier depending on the match up.
Sound analysis! Shooting 3s excessively is a risk of its own and becoming over reliant on it after building up a lead ends up like Houston's infamous 27 missed 3 pointers record.
you're talking like an old head. the true field goal percentage of a 3-pointer is way above what you remember it to be
This tracks for the Lakers imo. The Lakers have a Darvin Ham problem before anything else
Entertaining, interesting, but also informative and well put together vid man. I don't follow the NBA much, but when I do, it's with you Jxmy
Great insight as always man. Really helpful
As a guy who plays Mario Kart and knows about it a good amount, never thought I’d hear about Rubberbanding in the NBA. 😂
The NBA doesn’t have rubberbanding… it was an unnecessary comparison, I’m not sure why he said that.
Rubberbanding implies there is some mechanic or rule that helps the team that is behind catch up (better items, faster driving speed).
His video does demonstrate how shooting more 3s causes higher variance in game results and leads to crazy scoring runs, but that doesn’t = rubberbanding.
You’re just as likely to see a crazy blowout due to good 3pt shooting, but he didn’t include any info on that. If you google the NBAs blowout problem, it’s part of the same equation with the rise of 3pt shooting.
In summary: If there’s no objective ADVANTAGE to playing from behind, there’s no rubberbanding.
@@rickyrico900 There is no inherent mechanic to keep games close, but you have to consider this: what does a team down by 20 try to do? Catch up. Teams down will be chucking threes left and right to catch up. In a league almost entirely driven by the three-pointer (and winning games based on threes made), it's entirely plausible to say this is as close to rubberbanding as we'll get in the NBA.
@@dylan9013 i know what point he’s trying to make, that’s still not rubberbanding. The result may seem similar in certain games (crazy comebacks), but it’s due to a choice by teams to opt for high risk high reward playstyle in hopes to catch up. Not by any inherent mechanic designed to help them come back.
It’s like how in boxing you can choose to focus on pure power for a desperation KO in later rounds when you assume you’ll lose on technicals. Might work out, probably won’t, but either way that’s not rubberbanding.
Not trying to be a jerk, just nitpicking. This is a great video otherwise!
@@rickyrico900he made a comparison
@@dylan9013that’s just not true I seen comebacks where they only made like 1 3 but still closed the gap players are just better this is more like that super team argument where every starter is getting to a level where they can score 30+ just look what Derrick white did last night
Bro posted this on the same day that the clippers almost gave up a 31 point lead and he didn’t even know it😂

@rafaellariosa4815 so according to you, every 20pts lead is safe in todays NBA? Dude is right whether you like it or not.
@@rafaellariosa4815instead of just spewing conjecture why don’t you actually engage and talk about the numbers and graphs he uses and argue against them? Just saying they’re random numbers and graphs doesn’t make it true lol.
It is a great point tho @@rafaellariosa4815
@@rafaellariosa4815bro that graph split literally explains the importance of the 3 point shot and destroying leads. Are you sipping on silly juice???
I wonder if coaches should be calling quicker timeouts to curtail these scoring outbursts. I remember that was quite common in the past anytime momentum severely shifted.
A stat regarding called timeouts over the years would be interesting.
Don’t tell Darvin Ham that
They should change the rules and give each team a couple extra timeouts per game to stop those runs and allow for more challenges. But the league is about money, they want to see 150 point games. Adam silver will probably add a 4 point line.
Chris finch did exactly this tonight and it was a crazy close game all night. Ice them before they can run away.
Love the analysis jxmy! Was wondering if perhaps you could aggregate the evolution of 3pt volume over time and compare how it has changed on a quarter by quarter basis

To add on to the unpredictable playoffs this year, the Pacers literally just took a 3-1 series lead vs the Bucks
I mean, when the best 2 players are hurt, the third best player is not in good condition, a starter is playing through injury and 2 of those loses were extremely close.
This I my opinion just looks horrible for the pacers who already had a favorable matchup against the bucks without taking into account the injured players
I mean... Giannis still hasnt played in that series, Dame is injured now, although Khris is playing, he's still not in the best shape of his life. Not that unpredictable for the Pacers eliminate them considering all those factors.
This a bad example. Giannis was set to not play this series and Dame getting injured made the pacers winning less unpredictable
i predicted the pacers would win even if the bucks had dame and giannis, if they still had mike budenholzer or whoever, i would pick the bucks to win, the bucks have sucked with doc
Why would you comment about the NBA if you don’t watch it

You're an artist brother, what an awesome vid
this has been one of my favourite first round matchups in a very long time
I think one of the things that can explain that graph where shooting more threes wasn't a good predictor of wins. It is how the offense is structured. The 'spread' or 'five out' offense moves the defensive rebounders much further from the rim so the famous 'wall' of rebounding the 76ers had with Charles Barkley and Moses Malone playing together, or Mark Eaton and Karl Malone, Dennis Rodman, Lambier, and Hot Rod, etc. they were all closer to the rim so when they boxed out it created a 'pocket' around the rim that almost any miss was theirs for the taking. Now you see players getting as many if not more offensive rebounds as defensive.
