As an artist it's so nice hearing your critique - really it's inspired me to push my own work. You offered so many other aspects to consider. Oftentimes I rush the process instead of spending more time on the preliminary and reference gathering. So thank you!
I have major depression and this current depressive episode of mine is by far the worse, but your art inspires and pushes me to get up and paint. This means so much to me because I feel the best when I do art.
hey we dont know one another, but you will make it through it. just always look for a light at the end of the tunnel, no matter how dim it gets, its there. hope you feel better m8
i know you said figurative aspects aren’t your most preferred area to place your efforts, but i think you will really benefit from pushing yourself towards an understanding of what common shapes the muscles create. you don’t have to overwork yourself and do boring, borderline medical student skeletal/musculature studies over and over, because i don’t think that’s what your artwork wants.. like you said in the video, half the battle of portraiture is the shape and shadow. it’s the same with the figure, and the figure is very daunting considering how many moveable parts are within, but when i look at the back anatomy of the figure on the far right of your 1-100 piece, with their arm sticking out, the musculature is there, but if you allowed yourself more of an understanding to what those muscles are connecting to, why they move, where they curve and bulge and cast shadows/reflect light, your art will thrive. at risk of sounding like a complainer which i swear IM NOT I JUST LOVE YOUR STUFF 😔😭, i can view your work and tell from an outsiders pov that you love portraiture and color and composition, but maybe the figure is left behind. NOT TOTALLY left behind, but just further back in the pack. i say this because i see it in my own artwork. i love figure, but things like architecture and spacial awareness get left behind, and in context of what i create, it can drag the composition down with it. but i’m really sad to hear that the feedback on your most recent piece was filled with vitriol and opinions stated as facts. it’s easy to critique a stranger’s work from behind a screen without taking into account all that lead up, as you said, like the reference taking, compositing, gathering the material, the bravery to even place the brush down on the canvas and start AT ALL! your progress from the beginning of high school to the end is immense. my art didn’t start satisfying me until i was 19, and i’m 21 now, and have been drawing my entire life, and it’s because i was greatly inspired by the art around me but i wasn’t allowing myself to fully understand why the artists i loved were making the choices they were, but it’s obvious to me that you were capable of that understanding from such a young age. your love of painting is admirable, and i personally just would love to see you not push yourself per-say, but allow yourself even more.
Your critiques are very insightful! I think the only ranking that I really disagree with is Geraldine. I think it is definitely A tier quality in terms of inspiration, message, and execution. Personally, I think the atmosphere and brush strokes around her don't need to be as impressive as her face. Like you said about Sargents paintings, he chose to include detail where it mattered, which in turn, enhanced the detail. Also, too much layers on the pages in the background might make them incomprehensible... But to me, there is something that just sings about her portrait. Perhaps the composition which i think is very balanced and pleasing to the eye but also her expression and detail of her hands and face that pop through the atmosphere and colors. If feels so incredibly intentional and strong. Knowing the inspiration behind it makes it even more so. It just has a certain look to it that makes it hard for me not to look at. If it was in a room with other paintings, it would be the one i see in the corner of my eye that im just waiting to get to to see it entirely like it's enticing me. Something about it just makes it A tier for me.
Thank you! Studying art like this can sometimes can sometimes make you loose sight of the power in emotion. Some of my favorite paintings are very quiet and pensive, and they have a merit just as accomplished as more complex paintings. there is a "human-ness" to art that is far more allusive than studying a composition, color theory or anatomy that I wish I would have touched on more in this video.
Extremely strong growth! I hope I can follow your career as an artist for many years. It was very interesting to hear this summary of your art, much more than a simple tier list. I love the warmth that many your paintings have, I feel it would always be a joy to look at them in a home or gallery.

1-100 is my favourite. It's what led me to your channel via the shorts. Don't listen too much to the hate. Our brains put hate before love, cause it naturally means danger. So there's maybe also that there was more love than hate but you naturally listen more for the hate. Please don't fall for this trap. I want you to create more art and share it with the internet.
I dont understand how people could hate on 1-100... just jealous people who cant comprehend your skill at such a young age. For sure there are aspects you could improve on it, but it is still stunning.
I think it mostly has to do with my inspirations. The type of art that I was trying to make has been "mastered". Me stepping up to the plate, putting my voice into this landscape of art (where historically, voices like mine are not welcome) there are thousands of people who have studied these exact paintings and have an understanding far more complex than me. Vienna succession academics are very precious over that art, so who is this kid saying they can do it in their bedroom? When I made this painting, critics could look back at what history has taught them to point out the flaws in my imitation. When I set aside my ego, I do agree with most of the critiques, and then I'm just sat before my 10 foot painting like "well shit, all of this is wrong". I think that if my inspirations were not so historical or highly regarded, then critics couldn't approach my work under the lense of comparison. and when you compare me to Klimt, I don't stand a chance, and I don't think I ever will.
@@tailsjekel_artI don't know if my opinion really holds any weight as someone uneducated with art but here's my two cents as someone who just stumbled onto your amazing work. To me your art stands out the most because of your understanding of how to blend the relationship with the atmosphere of the background with your subject. There's something aweing about being able to see a singular subject interact with so much of the canvas. Your eyes are drawn to one subject and from there wonder/wander at the rest of the paint free to admire the rest of the painting because you know there's always the anchor of the subject. I think in 1-100 because there are so many subjects that don't seem to be really connected my eyes dont really feel like they can wander, more like theyre forced to look at the different subjects and therefore that sense of wonder is lost. I think for myself i like when your art blends the relationship with the subject and atmosphere so maybe if you would like to try something like blending the relationships between the subjects as well to flow back into the atmosphere to allow the viewer to wonder at your art. Again this is a completely uneducated perspective, I'm shit at art but I just thought your art was really damn cool to see. Keep up the good work man.
@@tailsjekel_art I'm a scuplture/ceramacist and I just want to add something ive learnt from years of making. You shouldnt't listen to critique unless its from someone whos voice you value and then only through a filter of how it applies to what your idea, discard all other else and only take a fascet of what theyre saying. often times critique is worthless, as people dont truely understand what is trying to be communicated as art extists outside of words. If you listen to people you end up making products not art, one of the best things I did at university years ago is to ignore my tutors and its carried on past that. Its must more couragous and important to do exactly your perspective is and take aspects of critique that you think applies or rework their critique to what makes sense in relation to your work. I have a mild distain for contemporary academics due to the strangehold they have on universities and how artist and academic has become a singular job within those institutions, ending with artist academics validating good and bad in competition etc.
@@tailsjekel_art Ages ago (50 years) when I could go to University and pay a minimal amount I got a studio art degree. Now it costs tens of thousands of dollars per year ! Your work is incredible. At 70 years old I am now just beginning to do art (life happens). I am fascinated with looking at your videos. I love them all. I still remember much from the art history classes I took. My favorite period is about 1870~ 1940 as there are many different artists within that time frame whose work I love, and I can see your work as a continuation of many... specifically, John Singer Sargent, Van Gogh, Klimpt. They seem to be your jumping point. I am fascinated with how up close your work looks abstract, but then you step back and it comes together with inner illumination. Thank you for staying with it... I think you were right to leave school ! I LOVE your work.
not to be dramatic or anything, but you are genuinely one of my favorite artists. your paintings are so BEAUTIFUL and you are a huge inspiration as a queer teenager looking to pursue art. i cannot wait to see where you go in the future and i really wish you all the best. i hope that one day i can see one of your paintings in person because GOD IM IN LOVE WITH THEM?????? and to know that you're so close in age to me makes me feel so inspired, like that could be me one day. i mean, i can't paint for shit, but i'm applying to colleges right now and hoping to take lots of art classes.
I think that ur unsolicited opinions on realism would provide new insights for learning, i hope to request more tips from u as well such as ur recommendation for john singer, please do more!
yeeeeeees i want to see that video of all your unsolicited opinions about the state of realism GURL!!! eta: honestly i just want to hear you talk about anything art related. the way you structure your words are enchanting. You make me so excited to see what you will do in the future!
the Geraldine painting is so relatable and really gives off a bittersweet effect for me, I think its such a common thing when someone you care about and have a deep connection with in your life has such contradicting and opposing views to you. This is the first video of yours that I've watched and I absolutely adore your work ❤❤❤ you just earned a new subscriber!
I’m fifteen minutes in and I’m almost tearing up. I feel so inspired and understood. I’ve been in an art block for SO long and I’ve been thinking about waiting a few more months to practice some skills and save money, then going to college for arts instead of the major I’ve planned on for years. I know art is what I’ve always wanted to do. I just feel scared of failure.
diva this is a tier list video suck it up. only joking. Also I'm an art school dropout and I am not the BIGGEST champion of the system. Art school is not required to be successful, and it is expensive AS SHIT. no gallery or competition i have ever applied to has ever required a degree from me.
love love love love love your content. it completely reignited my love for painting. im still somewhat of a beginner only having painted for 3 years, most of it being completely unserious, and I have struggled so much with the balance between academic studies and making the art I want to be making. it demotivated me to the point where ive nearly stopped painting entirely and chose to focus on other mediums for a while. what you said about learning as you paint what you want to paint when discussing the figure in "sinking" resonated with me so much. thank you for posting and I cant wait for future content
I come across a swamp of art online that's certainly pretty and technically impressive but your art definitely stands out. I think you achieve what you set out to and it's really evocative. You are a great artist :)
Unrelated to the video but I wanted to say that I'm so happy I found your channel. In a period where I was as far from art as possible, your art really opened a new door for me. I've been painting for what seems to be my whole life but it feels like I started art all over again and I'm just so excited and inspired to paint! It feels like art became more than something I can just do, it feels like my passion again. Thank you for sharing your art. You are one of if not the best painter I've seen.
i do agree that they are hard on themself, but i think that is why they are able to make so many amazing paintings! they are willing to be harsh and clear about the ways their work could be better! self appreciation and self criticism can exist simultaneously
I took art in high school, but I didn't end up going to art school (due to the family's expectations and I also wasn't sure if I wanted to pursue art as a career). So hearing about different techniques in your videos has been really cool and interesting! I was also surprised to hear that you got so much hate on 1-100. I watched the 40min video and thought it was brilliant. And whatever other people say... at the end of the day, you can't please everyone. And as long as you had a blast painting it, and feel good about what you've done looking back, I think that's the most important part. Thanks for the inspiration!
This is just so much inspiration for me! Love it. Most of the paintings are awesome and I liked listening to your critic Keep painting, it makes the world a more beautiful place ❤
@@tailsjekel_art Alright be careful girl😮💨, anyways besides your fabulous art your sense of humor is really entertaining to watch lol keep it up😎 ( and thanks for your music recommended in the last video tho )
A safe b-tier??? I agree with most of what you said but this one is kinda criminal. Also, i think Geraldine deserves S-tier. It deeply resonated with me, who was raised in a Christian household and only this year decided to stop being one. It reminded me of my mum, my aunts and other good Christian women in my life.
I love this! Thank you for your self-criticism. The portrait with 13 was so good already!! Now, the way I worded it may sound weird, but it helps a lot for me to watch other people improve and comment on what wasn't working out at the time. I think that your work was already great at 13. At that age, I was drawing pretty casually since i went through something and my art course in school ruined the fun. I only picked it up seriously with 18 again (now I'm 19 and I improved a lot)
Im a big solo Christian, and sinking, and under a God, both remind me of God a ton, they are amazing, and make me feel that you a representing the Power/Spirit of God in your paintings more then ive ever seen done. I want more! Its beautiful! Great job man.
Yes PLEASE make a video with your opinions on realism. I’ve been struggling with how I feel about creating realism so much, because it’s what I’m currently the best at, but it’s boring and it doesn’t tell a very noticeable story without a written description. Honestly I don’t even like realism, but I would love to learn more about integrating it with other styles and different techniques to make it interesting and powerful :)
i came here from ig and im glad i did. this was a wonderful video and insight into self-critique, reflection, and how to improve. as someone who’s really struggled for years with art-any kind-in school and outside, wanting to embrace the learning process while simultaneously trying to be perfect i can feel myself being spurred to action seeing your journey. also, please do make a video about your “unsolicited takes”. i can empathise with realism being impressive and gorgeous but boring, especially without that “artist’s voice”. i’d love to hear you talk about that :) have a great day!
I discovered you when I saw Sinking and it's really a piece of art that resonated with me. The lightning, posture and color are so powerful. It makes me think about our perception of reality that is bound to our senses and emotions. It feels like a blurry, unsurpassable trap but is the very condition to our existence. It's not a critique, just what I felt when I saw the painting.
there is something you do not want to do,so monopolise it, by doing this boring study by getting lots of jobs painting people in a clasical style to improve as you know you will; so put your work up for sale but SELL IT FIRST BEFORE YOU DO IT, & ALL YOU GOT TO DO IS ORGANISE IT AND DO IT HOW YOU WANT IT TO HAPPEN. if you know what i mean ... BTW YOU SAID YOU KNOW THAT YOU SHOULD.
I still think you're madly talented. I get the healthy arrogance bc I'm kinda the same. I really respect you, I think as soon as you figure out anatomy perfectly you're beyond good af. I believe in you ❤ I repeat, you're damn talented!! ^^
id be really interested in hearing your thoughts on realism! ive spent the past year or so doing realism studies and though its really helped with my technique, i kind of struggle more now with the creative aspect of drawing. right now, im in the process of merging the two i guess (?) and finding my middle ground between realistic and artistic. i really enjoy how realism looks, and doing studies has helped a lot with my art as a whole, but making art that has no true outlet just isnt scratching my “itch” that every artist has. edit: “i dont know why yet.” is such a strong sentiment. theres always room to grow.
I have to finish watching but the painting of the actor u put in C level is such a good read. I always see non creatives rate by it "looks like a photo" and that's not enough if u doing realism for sake of realism it has to outdo a photo and that can feel unrealistic at times or a recipe for heart ache. The process so technical is it really art that's fun so I personally don't ever get excited to do realism just to impress either. Seeing someone who have such nice doddles call that their trash then goes on to break out a grid a stern face photo and colors a grandpa would wear hurts so much to then have a result that people would assume is done by anyone with skill is such a big L to me.
Just wondering how much you would charge for a painting in the size of "in my own world again" and in the same style of it, or the other A tiers, if I'd describe an idea to you? I don't really have money to spend right now, but just getting an idea of how much it would be, for a potential request in the future
I learned so much during the reflection/writeup process for this video! ( I wrote up 13 single-spaced pages lol). I took a little bit of a break from my current painting to work on this video, and when I returned I reworked some of the compositional elements because studying my old work helped me to improve this one.
Can't wait to see how great of an artists you're going to be in like 30 years. You're already so skilled and with such a deep understanding of many of the fundamental structures of art, I am really excited to see how you develop as you gain more experience.

Ages ago (50 years) when I could go to University and pay a minimal amount I got a studio art degree.
You make me so excited to see what you will do in the future!
gahhhhh i think i should do it too lemme get my words together
YEEEEEEEEEESSSSSS!!!!
the Geraldine painting is so relatable and really gives off a bittersweet effect for me, I think its such a common thing when someone you care about and have a deep connection with in your life has such contradicting and opposing views to you. This is the first video of yours that I've watched and I absolutely adore your work ❤❤❤ you just earned a new subscriber!
You are so well informed. You could be a teacher. I am so impressed with you young man
I’m fifteen minutes in and I’m almost tearing up.
Learned so much from your critique. Love your brush work. Dabs of glowing light and fascinating shadows -beautiful.
Your art is so beautiful keep posting! :D
Thank youuuuu!!!
is that morgan freeman portrait inspired by the robin sealark video?
Yes exactly
this is actually the most genius video idea ever
thats what I'm sayin!
Bravo! You are an incredible painter. I'd love you to criticuque my paintings LOL. you're so insightful, seriously.
You are one of if not the best painter I've seen.
oh my god this is so awesome to hear!
i think you are too hard on yourself. i think all of those look cool. my only advice is be sillier, but i might be biased as a goofy girl myself.
i do agree that they are hard on themself, but i think that is why they are able to make so many amazing paintings! they are willing to be harsh and clear about the ways their work could be better! self appreciation and self criticism can exist simultaneously
Love it. Most of the paintings are awesome and I liked listening to your critic
Keep painting, it makes the world a more beautiful place ❤
Your left eye looking strange and red, you ok😭?
I had eye surgery! I had a lazy eye for a minute and they had to pull it back into place lol. they are mostly healed now.
It reminded me of my mum, my aunts and other good Christian women in my life.
hearing you speak about your art process is so magical
about to spend another half hour not doing the dishes 😋😋
i support this
Please talk abt your qualms with realism! (I have a lot myself)
Just keep on painting you can keep working on. Time painting paints.
Ive just been doing some writing to gather my thoughts. Once I'm prepared, I think I will get a video together.
Glancing between your art and my wip drawing just makes me feel...
nice art, hope I can learn from your use of color
i came here from ig and im glad i did. this was a wonderful video and insight into self-critique, reflection, and how to improve. as someone who’s really struggled for years with art-any kind-in school and outside, wanting to embrace the learning process while simultaneously trying to be perfect i can feel myself being spurred to action seeing your journey.
also, please do make a video about your “unsolicited takes”. i can empathise with realism being impressive and gorgeous but boring, especially without that “artist’s voice”. i’d love to hear you talk about that :) have a great day!
What a beautiful interpretation.
This video helped me alot with tips to improve my art!! Please make another analysis video!
6:40 I would be interested:))
there is something you do not want to do,so monopolise it, by doing this boring study by getting lots of jobs painting people in a clasical style to improve as you know you will; so put your work up for sale but SELL IT FIRST BEFORE YOU DO IT, & ALL YOU GOT TO DO IS ORGANISE IT AND DO IT HOW YOU WANT IT TO HAPPEN. if you know what i mean ... BTW YOU SAID YOU KNOW THAT YOU SHOULD.
You should make a video about materials, brushcleaning etc!!
Geraldine looks like Paramahansa yogananda and I love that I get both Geraldine and ( in my mind) a piece of a pretty major spiritual figure.
It looks like you were taught from Leonardo da Vinci
Love your art! Thank you for inspiration and thank you for good tips. 👏😍
Love looking back at your pieces. I remember each of these when you made them. Love your work and love being in the back ground and love you 🫶
addie was an O fuckin G
Take a look to Zdzisław Beksinski art. And I think everyone should see his paintings live to see all those details he did there.
when will you have live stream of a painting you will take your time creating. id watch episodes if i have to
You're an amazing artist!
very good thank you
21:18 saving for reference
m m m fine art yumm
Morgan Freeman is 10x more problematic than the other youtubers 😂
well shit
I live for ur yt videos ! so inspiring, absolutely love ur content
thank you!!
Just wondering how much you would charge for a painting in the size of "in my own world again" and in the same style of it, or the other A tiers, if I'd describe an idea to you?
I don't really have money to spend right now, but just getting an idea of how much it would be, for a potential request in the future
It depends on how complex the concept is, but it would probably hover around $10,000
@@tailsjekel_art That's good to know, thank you for answering!
I SHOULD DO THIS- Im obviously nowhere near as good as you, but i think that this is such a good idea, for me to improve aswell.
I learned so much during the reflection/writeup process for this video! ( I wrote up 13 single-spaced pages lol). I took a little bit of a break from my current painting to work on this video, and when I returned I reworked some of the compositional elements because studying my old work helped me to improve this one.
@@tailsjekel_art Cool! (That's a lotta pages lol) now I just gotta find a bunch of art of mine to put on a tier list lol
The picture of Geraldine is incredible like I’m deadass blown away😭Not only did it show your growth as an artist, but as a person.
I love sinking, is it available for sale?
Sinking has sold, however I have prints available in my bio!
Love this!! Thank you for sharing
And thank you for watching!
Can't wait to see how great of an artists you're going to be in like 30 years. You're already so skilled and with such a deep understanding of many of the fundamental structures of art, I am really excited to see how you develop as you gain more experience.
your insight is so good and it really helps me think about my own art please make more critiques and just talking about your process
One minute 30 seconds in; I’m hooked. You brought a whole other level of poof- I’m enthralled. Thank you, young sir. 😊
omg I love you😭😭
The A tier paintings are just 'wow'. I am blown away by how beautiful they all are. Keep up the good work ❤😊
I just saw your earlier short about dropping out of college to pursue your art, and I really think you made the right choice.
Cool art!
Loved this!!! So educational
