Does the maverick 88 operate the same as the mossberg 500
The bolt is simplified a bit, after taking mine apart half a dozen times I finally figured out the bolt workings. The bolt itself doesn’t pivot, a piece inside does. This animation has helped tremendously to figure out how the shotgun functions and what may cause certain malfunctions. Thank you!
After learning to disassemble, clean, and reassemble my shotgun, I wanted to know what the different pieces actually do, especially the shell stop arms, which can be a bit tricky to put back into place. This video made it perfectly clear, and I now have a much better idea how the whole mechanism actually works.
Thanks a bunch for the info! I was having trouble with the locking bar not unlocking after pulling the trigger, forcing me to hit the button to unlock it after every shot. After watching the video, I disassembled and inspected the gun and found that the pin that goes thru the sear and activates the spring when the sear moves, had worked out of the bore. So, after moving the tip of the spring out of the way and reseating the roll-pin everything works as it should. A simple enough fix, but one I never would have figured out without the video. Thanks again!
I had a similar problem to yours, but what I found was the problem is with the hammer. The lower roll pin in the hammer that applies pressure to the action locking bar spring after you pull the trigger had fallen out at some point. The missing pin released the spring pressure on the assembly causing the action lock lever to stay in the locked position after pulling down on the trigger.

Mossberg sent me a set of replacement shell stoppers once before but the problem did not go away completely; got slightly better but did not go away... gonna try something I learned from your video! Good video. Having owned a 500A since 1985, who knew such a simple design is as complex as it is. I have even more respect for this venerable design.

This is great. I am having issues with the shells not coming out of the magazine tube on occassion, and I was having a difficult time figuring out what actuates the responsible part, and this 3d simulation made it crystal clear! Thanks for this fantastic work.

I did indeed enjoy this most informative video. I have a 500A made in May of 1970. It has some differences, most notably the single action bar only. It has been neglected in a closet for some time and I recently took it out to recondition it and put it back into service. I'm no mechanical engineer, but I do admire the parsimony of the design and its elegance. I do hope the single bar system is strong enough for my use because the receiver and bolt slide are not cut for a second bar. There are also other minor differences.
What happened to the modern engineering? This system is more than 100 y. o. Yet, it still works awesome. Props to John Moses Browning. God bless his soul.

Dude...ive been trying to get my return spring reinstalled thinking i put it back in wrong, because FOR SOME REASON im the only person with a maverick 88 that has a COMPLETLY differently designed return spring lol but this vid helped a lot, gonna try again right now haha

With your 500 do you ever have problems with the edge of the shell not going into the chamber like getting caught up how can I fix this

The pivoting shell stop on the older models acts on the shell lifter making contact on a lip rather than the back edge of the slide pivoting the assembly. The parts are interchangeable if the old style wears out and I suspect this design change is because Mossberg avoiding infringement of patent similarities to the Hi Standard manufactured a few years before it. Much hunch is the old design was a work around to avoid patent infringement much like waiting for the Remington patent to expire before using dual action bars.

Help needed. I have an old Mossberg 500 AT. I cannot find any info on the weapon. I would like to know how old it is and another problem I have is on the mag tube. There are two brass soldered rings on the mag tube. Can they be ground off as it creates a problem for the forend removal.

In this video, (10:35) you have the trigger and behind it is a spring. Right behind the spring, you have a thin small tube that sits flush, what is that called and what is it for?
I was putting a black hawks knoxx breachersgrip on my shotgun and noticed that this little pin wasn’t 100% inside. Meaning, the right side of it wasn’t in the hole. It had fallen out so I grabbed a small screw driver and lifted it to like it up with the hole and with another screwdriver I pushed the other side in (it was hanging far to the left) and now it was flush with no over hang and in both holes.
I last shot my shotgun about 5 months ago, no problem. Any ideas?

Drop a mossberg 500 series and the part you DON'T mention, the Elevator, one of those two long parts that poke out the side of the reciever. When the weapon is dropped, SOMETIMES, those pins can pop out of place. IF that happens in a home defense situation.........

I have a 500 that I just got used and there seems to be something loose/sliding around. It sounds like a piece of gravel or a BB somewhere near the pump action and barrel. It makes the noise when I tilt the gun up and down. I was just wondering what it is and if it's safe to shoot. Thank you
The noise your hearing is probably the plug in the magazine tube, a short piece of dowel rod or similar size shape material that limits your mag capacity. If the mag tube is loaded and the noise stops then there’s your answer. If this is the case, yes the firearm is fine and that’s normal. Hope this helps

how come the shell doesn't fall out the lifter? only the front is supported from the bottom

I pulled out my 500e 410 from a decade+ of not being used. When loading/ejecting shells, the shells just seems to fall out the bottom of the gun before being loaded, or get jammed ..somehow. I found that if you only load 1 shell at a time, it is less likely to jam, but still tends to want to fall out if you aren't both fast with the action movement, and tilting the gun slightly to have the shell favor falling against the side, instead of out the bottom. At first, I thought that the gun was missing the loading ramp like on the 870 Remm, but then after looking at this video, I see that it handles shell loading completely differently than the 870. I am stumpped as to why shells seem to fall out while pumping the action. My only guess is that since the shell lifter engages so late in the action (like the last half inch), that the shell stops are clearing long before the shell lifter has a change to get under them. But why?? Any ideas?
It sounds like the left stop is not grabbing enough of the edge of the shell and it is clearing the edge too early. I would take it out, put it in a vice and give it the slightest of bends in towards the curve. Then it will clear the shell later and the lifter will have time to drop down and catch the next shell. Worst case here is that if you mess it up or it doesn't work, just order a new stop from Mossberg.
If the right stop were bad then the shell that would drop would be the NEXT shell not the one currently being loaded.

So hypothetically if you ground down the top of the locking lug and replaced the handguard with some springs attached where the handguard was it would be semi automatic?
I would question whether sg shell pressure would have the energy to drive all that mass in relation to the spring weight you would need to drive it back to battery. You would eliminate the locking block since the spring is what would actually hold it. I guess if the forend wasn’t as big it may function.
The original single action bar was made from milled steel not alloy...much stronger and smoother...

The action lock is confusing me and maybe I need to have a shotgun in my hands to see this. I see many videos of people racking the slide back and forth with not obstructions. Are they holding the action lock down while they continuously rack back and forth or am I missing something?

The Remington 870 only had one. Mossberg had two, then Remington later added two....
i dont thinks so, the first gun i ever got was a mossberg 500 20ga for my 9th or 10th birthday so it must have been around 1980 or 81 it only had 1 action bar.
Nice video with an x ray view of WHAT should be happening. I have a Mossberg 500 FLEX and the shotgun will not feed shells. The two tabs on the shell stop and interrupter will not allow the shells to feed onto the lifter. Have tried different makes of shells and it will not feed. Contacted Mossberg and they want the serial number the receipt and a video of the problem. True BS to me.

You're confusing strength with ductility, the fact that aluminium is softer doesn't say anything about it's strength.
