I love Barbara's comment about going to the temple in her swimming suit. as a temple worker we welcome all as long as they are worthy no matter what they are wearing. One thing that we all do is change into appropriate clothing inside. it isn't our place to judge.
Dr. Gardner is awesome. I love how she flawlessly ties in the counsel of our modern Prophets, Apostles, and leaders - it just pours out of her. Thank for the the person stories, the scriptural interpretation, and the modern application. Brava!
Thankyou for bringing on Dr. Barbara Morgan Gardiner. I will be listening to parts of this with my children. What a wonderful and knowledgeable teacher she is!! I love the sorces she cites and her beautiful testimony. Please bring her back again!
This was so great! I agree modesty is not about shaming others or yourself, it is about respect for God, for yourself and for others. It is so much less about outward rules and so much more about reflecting an inward attitude of reverance.
I loved Dr. Gardner’s comments about modesty. Having served many years in young women’s, I have lately been discouraged as I see the young women at church wear shorter and shorter clothing. I need to live truth and teach truth and leave it at that. God bless our young people to get the message. Sister Gardner, you are so inspiring!
You put modesty so wonderfully and understandable in every direction. Living the covenant and not judging others…but to love them…and our responsibility is to teach our daughters and families.
I am ever so grateful for all of this, mostly the first part where Dr. Barbara speaks of her father giving her permission to find out for herself. We can teach it and live it, but something wonderful happens when we know it. Those moments we have as our witness that God is watching over us and Angel's are walking beside us! Thank you for your insights, your testimony and your love of our Father in heaven and His Son, Jesus Christ💕🤗
Onesimus means “profitable” or “helpful.” Onesimus represents each of us. Alone we are unprofitable servants but with Christ we become useful valuable profitable. Philemon means “loving” or “affectionate kiss” and represents our Heavenly Father. He loves us and is willing to forgive us and embrace us with His heavenly kiss. Paul of course represents Jesus willing to be our advocate and step in our place to pay the price for us. Willing to pay our debt. Beautiful!!!!
Barb is the best! Her light and goodness shines through as I have witnessed since meeting her and brother years ago. Thanks for the wonderful podcasts and insights into Paul’s writings!
Haha. Sundays ARE a fashion show here and now. I love that Sister G laid it out that we ARE responsible for how we dress when we know we're creating thoughts in others that may be inappropriate. WE are responsible for our thoughts, but we're responsible, too, for our actions and how we affect others.
This was one of the best episodes! I absolutely loved it. I think it is so great as Dr. Gardener pointed out the importance of teaching....not judging but teaching is so important. Thank you for the help to my scripture study. I taught seminary for years but feel like I learn so much as I listen to your podcast!
Listening to the discussion about 2 Tim (the itching ears passage), I was reminded that the German translation of the same scripture is much better than the KJV. The German version (the one we used as missionaries) rendered this: "wonach ihnen die Ohren jucken" - which translates roughly as "that which their ears were itching (to hear)". That's very colorful - how many of us follow the things which our ears (and minds) are itching to hear? The fashions of the day, the wordly music, the glamorous lifestyles and choices, etc. Sadly, as Sis Gardner read from Paul, "I'm the chief of all sinners". German also has a term, "Ohrwurm" (ear worm) which refers to - for example - a tune that you keep hearing in your mind over and over. German music - popular music and otherwise - has several ear worms. We have those in the US, too. Even though I have tried as much as possible to avoid tobacco and alcohol advertisements, I'll bet I could hum a couple of bars of a commercial, and 3/4 of your listeners could name the product and its manufacturer. Ear worms that cause our ears to itch for something. Our ears itch for the praise of the world. They itch for acceptance and respect. They itch for someone to tell us "it does not matter what I do". They itch for us to avoid responsibility, blame, or criticism.
I wanted to request that Hank and John begin each podcast with a hymn. I think it would invite the Spirit 10x. If not, I understand. I will remain faithful to the podcast.
Hello I know that you men are amazing men of God. I am so lost and full of sadness, hopelessness and guilt. Do you believe everyone can be forgiven by God? How can you get there? Does God hear everyone pray and know what is happening at all times?
I want to comment about modesty with regard to the way we dress affecting others thoughts. While it’s true that the way we dress doesn’t make us responsible for other’s thoughts, we wouldn’t want to be responsible for influencing others to have inappropriate or immoral thoughts by how we dress. Hopefully nothing we wear or the way we act or the things we do would cause others to want to think or do the wrong things.
What is the verse or verses of scripture exactly that Dr. Gardner is referring to in "07:45 Dr. Gardner shares a story about building her personal area.?
I totally agree with what Hank said about telling his sons that they are responsible for their own thoughts and not what others are wearing. But.... a few years ago I watched as a male leader in our ward was talking with a woman who was wearing a very, very low and revealing dress. His face was beet red and you could tell he was uncomfortable. My heart just ached for him and I wished I could just grab that woman and tell her she needed to put some clothes on. She still dresses like that and it makes church uncomfortable. So my point is, women need to help out by dressing modestly too.
Off the bat... my thoughts on women in 1 Tim 2... Specific incidentally to the women of the Ephesian early church. Can also be insightful when we remember that symbolically the woman is the church and the husband is Jesus Christ. This metophor can also be transposed onto our parents Adam and Eve (Adam symbolic of The Saviour leaves Heavenly Fathers Presence, Eve fallen tied by covenants with Adam is honoured and returned Home to her Father). We are all of us... male and female Eve.... she is Eve-ry-thing she is us because she is the church. In an age where so many of us are forsaking the essential covenential agreements because and through sofestry of a fallen wo I learn then from chapter 1 Tim 2 ... Be reverential and silent... men and women, we are all Eve...
Not my favorite in terms of gospel study of Paul. It was more about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints today than it was about Paul and his mission and challenges. I disagree with her interpretation of the role of women in the early church, Women traditionally were not admitted into worship in the ancient synagogues, The LDS church itself has gone through major changes with regard to the place women have in and outside of the church for example. And the church has changed in terms of racial integration I appreciate the mission that Dr. Gardner is passionate about, and I have read her book, but for now I want to learn of Paul and the early church and the study and understanding of the gospel of the New Testament
On modesty and gender roles in church she seems to be internally conflicted. On one hand saying we should teach the truth plainly without fear and other hand she is clearly multiplying words to avoid offending modern sensibilities. The explanation of women remaining quiet doesn’t sound very plausible - Paul seems to be clearly talking to general principles in referencing Eve and why would there be just one ward where women should be quiet? There is no mention of patriarchy in the church or gender roles in that era. Similarly on modesty, she is trying to teach the principle very indirectly without explaining what modest dress looks like to avoid offense. We don’t teach other doctrines in such an obscure way. Finally on non-judgmentalism, she doesn’t clearly explain that of course we need to judge just to function as human beings in the world but there is a way to do this lovingly. But the non-judgmentalism of the world just means lack of standards and moral relativity. As gospel teachers let’s elaborate what this looks like rather than just telling people what they want to hear.

We just don't need them, we already have them. I know so many of these special woman and I am one.

By the way Menlo Smith was one of my husband's first contacts with the church!!
Thanks!

Dr. Gardner needs her own podcast
She has one. Studying the general conference talks. I follow her on Instagram.

I wonder if Timothy was dealing w women as we all are chatty and visiting . My thought
