on a regular cartoon, a crossover special would be really cool. here it's just a normal episode. that would be because this said cartoon would stay within universe except for that occasion. what im trying to say here luigi fan is that a portal didn't need to show up for characters from another franchise to hop into the story because characters from other franchises are crossing over all the time on your channel. mario and friends could have just been walking down the street and suddenly show up. It's just my stupid opinion. stay fresh dude :)
