If a number of people move from Octopus to Eon then I expect Octopus will review their rates accordingly. Thanks for being a pioneer.

I've been watching some comments on line of people moving from Octopus and thinking just that. Octopus are a company that won't want to be left behind and I'd expect some interesting tariff tweaking in the next couple of months.
Till then I better have another go at the spreadsheet although on IOG I think the benefits will be somewhat less for us.

Hi - Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment on this video.
Definitely agreed, and part of the reason I switched was their limited reduction in the off peak for Go in April. Plus, keeping one eye on Octobers prices a 12 month fix for both import and export is very welcome right now 👍🏽

I think loyalty is important. Octopus continue to offer the highest number of tariffs. I’m on agile with fixed agile for export. Made £30 this week on a modest set up. I don’t see anything in your video that would make me move to Eon. Tonight I’m discharging at 15p. I will then film the battery at below 0p.

Hi - Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment on this video.
Useful to know. I was in the same position and stayed with Octopus for 5 years. The savings won't be there for everyone or enough to make people switch and that was never the intention. Rather, it was to demonstrate that there are other options out there which is good and will hopefully mean prices stay competitive.

I’m so glad you did this whole process, you’ve cemented my thoughts that the small saving from switching might not be worth the massive hassle and loss of the excellent customer service I get from Octopus! Best of luck though and I look forward to seeing your next update on the actual cash savings you get. That switch process would have stressed me out loads though!

Hi - thanks for the comment. I'm not sure the savings is that small, especially if I chose to stay with E.On for some time and now that we've bought our first EV. I think October will be an interesting time to see what happens to the octopus rates. I'm safe in the knowledge knowing my rates are fixed for 12 months.
The process wasn't actually that bad and the main thing was that my import was backdated. And export was paid by octopus up to the point I switched over export so I lost nothing. I don't disagree that octopus are a great company. However, the savings were too great to ignore. I certainly look forward to posting an update in a few months or so.
Thanks again for stopping by 😊

I made the move from Octopus to EON recently. It took just 6 days to get switched onto the Drive V3 tarriff. I too have solar and batteries and have a 4 bed house so I stated the house was a 1/2 bed as I knew my bills would be low and therefore avoided the trap you fell into on overpaying in the early months. My DD is just £49 and I do not anticipate this increasing if consuming overnight charging for two EV's and battery top up on the off peak rate and then pushing SEG during the days.

Hi Nathan - Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment on this video.
6 days sounds ideal. That's a good tip when signing up to underestimate the usage. I put 4000 kWh in but there is no way to indicate those are largely all off peak. All is not lost, I am slowly reducing it down 😅

HI Shan, I used to be with EON before I got my battery. When I asked for an Economy 7 quote, I was told that my SMETS 2 meter was not up to the job and that I would need to have an Economy 7 meter installed at £138. In fact, I was told that they couldn't even quote me without the meter swap! Therefore I switched to Octopus who can communicate with a SMETS 2 meter for import and export. When my fixed tariff year is up, though I may have another look at EON. Good video!

I too am a long standing Octopus customer having been on nearly all of their tariffs, also from the Toon and I've had Evs since 2013.
I've been on that FB E.On group since it started as I've just had my solar and batteries installed a few weeks ago. 16x Aiko 455w in two 8 DC arrays with the relatively new Sigenergy 6kW Inverter and 5+8kWh batteries.
I also can't get the IOG tariff have no compatible car or home charge unit.
I'm on Agile import and Outgoing fixed at 15p just accepted just 3 days ago on the 9th.
Everything you mentioned about E.on was my concern also and decided that for now I like Octopus for its admin, app and monthly export account payments. I'm still going to keep looking at that ND tariff as it will definitely be better over the winter months at 6.9p import to charge the batteries and car. Liked and subscribed 👍🏻.

Thanks for the video. Those rates look good, even against the Intelligent octopus go that I am on with 15p export. like you, I had not even looked at the competition because I have been very happy with the customer service and the tariffs. On top of this I am really impressed with their changing things up all the time, ie last week they started to run free electric sessions, and in fact there is another one tomorrow between 1-2pm. Any use of electric will be free (above what you would normally use during that time). they did the same on Friday. we managed to get one EV on our zappi at 7KW for the hour, and our second EV on the granny charger at 2KW. We set our house battery charging at 5KW, and then cooking, dishwasher and washing machine all running. We will find out in 7 days how we did and be credited into our account for the free energy. Last winter, they were doing saver sessions where you would get paid for the energy you did not use, or if you exported during the period. I am looking forward to doing those this year as the rates were crazy, something like £2 per KW saved or exported, as well as your normal export rate.
I am curious, does eon do these sort of things as these will add up over a year and they help to truly engage the customers in energy arbitrage in helping balance the grid. cheers for the video. John

      @everythinghome  Місяць тому

I disagree - spending up to £1000 to have a specific charger installed just so I can access a tariff which could change its rates or T&Cs at any time doesn't make sense to me as I can achieve what I need to with a granny charger or our existing dumb fast charger. Of course, if you need a charger then as you say it makes sense to chose one that fits the bill

    • @alexwebber2612
      @alexwebber2612 Місяць тому

@@everythinghome Zappi 2 are approx £650 vs £350 for generic dumb chargers. Fitting I suspect is very similar cost for both. So £300 difference which opens up a lot more choices of intelligent tariffs and allows worry free car selection later on (with smart charger your cars don’t need to be supplier compatible)
If you have dumb charger then you’re right it works, but locks you out of that 7p tariff for 6 hours.
I feel that octopus have done far more to further lower bills than the legacy suppliers and they are just as capable of altering T&Cs. Jumping ship now for pence seems a little disingenuous. Plus the customer service is far superior to the legacy suppliers I’ve used before.

Yes, they said it was in thier T&Cs... but it seems totally unreasonable. The meter has worked for about two years and so it was reasonable to expect that it would continue working. We are all being encouraged to move to EVs, solar, batteries ASHP etc, these are significant financial commitments and it relies on the energy providers sticking to the deal agreed. @@everythinghome Hi I've given a like 🙂.
I have had a few quotes for solar and one was from Contact Solar an EDF partner and I was told that EDF are planning to bring in a solar plan with zero standing charge.
The fact that we are all tied to the grid and the national grid is national it really should be the same standing charge in all areas, after all we all pay income tax at the same basic rate and I would say electricity is a necessity.
The fact that different energy providers have different standing charges tells me it's not for grid up keep but just easy money 💰.
I have narrowed down my preferred manufacturer to be sunsynk or fox. Fox has lower start up voltage and higher voltage batteries. Sunsynk has slightly cheaper quotes.

While not really relevant to the main topic of video you might want to keep your thoughts open about gas tracker.
The value of it has gone down and the July 2024 tariff is very close to standard rate. While it should stay cheaper than the cap over winter as expectation is priced in, any unexpected spike in gas prices could easily ruin your whole years savings. The risk vs reward just isn't there now with the equation getting worse with each update. So for now I have gone back to SVR for gas while I keep an eye out for deals or look for a new long term plan.

Thanks - always sensible to keep an eye on it. I've noticed it ticking up of late but not sat down and crunched the numbers yet. Although, from a glance and over the years I've been on it it's always worked out cheaper. Worth having a look again sometime soon, thanks for the comment 👍

@@everythinghome Yes in the past it has saved me lots of money too. They didn't change the formula for quite a while but now seems to be changing it to be much more profitable for them and worse value for customers. Like today the rate in my region is 5.05p (July 2024 tariff) so only a tiny bit less than SVR (5.34p). If there was an unexpected spike in say Jan when you would be likely using much more gas all those tiny savings could be gone within a month's bill.
One advantage tracker still has is locking the daily standing charge for 12 months.
I guess as they say all good things come to an end. 😟

Interesting video. I moved from Octopus GO to Intelligent Octopus Go some time ago . I assume you cant do this as your car or charger aren't compatible. My tariff is 22.78p for peak and 7p for off peak (6 hour period) with an export figure of 15p. That means I can charge my battery at 7p per kwh and export it at 15p. The standing charge is 53.94p. @@everythinghome Hi. I have run the numbers on my data for past year (1st Aug 23 to 31st July 24) using the EON tariff (and including the additional 1 hr off peak period ie 7 hours not 6) compared to my current tariff. I get an annual total cost of electricity of -£131.65 on IOG compared to -£148.59 on the EON tariff (nb costs are both negative ie savings). For simplicity I have applied the current tariff to the whole year as I dont know the tariff changes for EON over past 12 months! So this tells me if I was on EON I would have saved an additional £17 over the year. HOWEVER these are just energy costs. If I then additionally incorporate Standing Charge as well then my TOTAL annual cost was £65.23 on IOG compared to £111.29 on the EON tariff ie £46 more cost if I was on EON. Obviously I cant take into account what will happen in October particularly as the IOG tariff will inevitably increase whereas EON tariff is fixed

I'm currently (no pun intended) running at 99% off peak (car and house) and I see that continuing for most of the year. So the only variables for someone like me (battery EV solar) are off peak rate and standing charge (since not much diff between 15p and 16.5p export rates) since an extra few hours at night make no difference. I think I'm more of a usual example than you having a very slow charger and the length of the off peak being important. I can add 150 miles in 6 hours so almost never need more than that (in fact I can say never in 4 years) and you can use devices like washing machines in parallel with an ev charge.
I know EV Nick has explained how to game intelligent octopus to get more than the 6 hours and I've occasionally got that but there's a limit to what you can do for more than 6 hours of cheap electric anyway most batteries will be full in 4 hours or so
Would you have a different answer if you had a faster charger? I would find that a serious inconvenience as I'd be plugging in most nights

Whereas Octopus don't currently recognise my Givenergy charge point with a Polestar 4 car which is already on order.... that means I can only have Octopus Go at 5 hours instead of EONS 7 hours when I get the car. Also my export go's down to 8p with Octopush I believe whereas Eon is at 16.5p?! I have a 20kwh battery system (big electric users) and the car to come so the 7 hours and keeping a decent export rate for summer as we have 19 panels too which do circa 900-1100kwh's a month would be good. I must admit my experience of EON customer service is extremely mixed and mostly negative tbh; you really have to persevere to find someone there that is willing and able to do the simpliest of things. Also their insistence on fixed DD payments at ridiculously high levels is crazy even with evidence of actual usage from regular meter readings; hopefully that will eventually change in time following the installation of a Smart Meter in May.

Thanks for sharing John - my experience has been largely positive so far thankfully. I'm sure there are some Octopus customers who have had poor experiences. The savings were worth taking the risk. I'm sure if it al hits the fan I'll let you all know 😅

While quite interested, please just cut to the chase, got a few minutes in, and lost the will to live. I'm sure it's fascinating but why not do a 1 minute summary ?

do all these export tarrifs require MSC certs?

I can't recall for Octopus as I signed up a while ago but for E.on it's MCS or FlexiOrb as mentioned in the video

Why are you ignoring intelligent GO? at 7p per pkh for 6 hours off peak? By far the best rate. Add that to 15p Outgoing rate they pay you and its a no brainer.

I find it discriminatory that Octopus only offer Intelligent Octopus to EV drivers - I can’t drive so I can’t get the rates they can to power their house - total discrimination

I suppose that's the advantage of E.On's next drive tariff in that you can either have an EV or solar and battery storage

@@everythinghome agree at least they let folks with batteries use the tariff which will be reason enough now for me to leave Octopus

Can I have your email address that is associated with Eon please? They aren't able to pay the referral to you or me as the email address here isn't the one they hold and the referral link aren't enough, apparently.
