But there WERE going to be female mercs, in fact the concept team made female counterparts of the mercs, its a common practice when creating concept art for games. I don't exactly remember why they didn't add a female merc (I've heard that they simply didn't have time making an entire new model for TF2, others I've heard it simply "doesn't fit the tf2 vibe".) I personally am on board for a female merc, especially during the time where women also did bloody combat stuff.
I never heard of plans by valve to add female mercs. But valve would definitely have time to add them especially since the community has already add them fully voiced and all.
