  • Repairing a Sony DV / MiniDV VCR. In the second part I try to repair the Firewire interface, lubricate the mechanism, clean the heads and repair the cooling fan.

Thanks for the video, only things I do different is to use a small makeup brush "yup borrowed from wife's makeup bag" ;) its only 2-3mm wide to put the lithium grease onto the rails, using the Qtip or cotton buds (uk) you will find they leave small hairs if they break up, but If you twist them in your fingers before use to tighen up the fibers helps. Also before oiling the bearing on the fan I would have used another small brush to dust off the fins and shroud area I have a small VAX hoover with variable speed in the right place just to extract the dust while cleaning with the brush.

Great video! What kind of grease did you use for the transport ( min

Good morning! I have this device and I have a strange problem: The audio from pre-recorded cassettes (for example with a video camera) does not play. Even when recording the cassette with the Sony DHR1000, the audio is neither recorded nor played. If you have any suggestions I would appreciate them very much. Thank you!

It looked like, on your video, two of the contacts of the firewire where bridged by a tiny wire. Is that on purpose?

Lovely high quality video. I have no high tension power supply card anymore. It got fried. So please help me to get one!

Good video. The six pin plug on a firewire cable was accidentally plugged into a pc the wrong way around, and ruined the 4 pin connection on my DHR-1000. Do you think that it would be repairable? A JC 13 board costs more than the whole machine.

I was trying to fix a tape loading issue. I removed the mechanism and checked the surface-mount electrolytic capacitors on the CM-49 board. Almost all had excessive ESR, so I replaced them. The tape loading problem was not fixed by this, and then there was a loud bang; the PSU had failed. I had previously replaced the 2.2uF capacitor (C102) along with C202 and C203 (1500uF 10V), but this time Q101 had gone short-circuit which led to blown 0.47 ohm resistors (R110 + R115), 2.2 ohm resistors (R117 + R107), transistors Q102 + Q103 and the opto-isolator (PH101). After fixing the PSU, the loading problem persisted until I watched this video about applying a drop of oil to the pinch-roller lifting shaft. Now it loads and runs perfectly, so thank you very much.

Nice job, very fiddly machine and then the bodged "repairs" 🤮 If you want to make the fan even more silent I think cleaning the dust off the blades etc can help some.

Dear DrCassette, I enjoyed both of your videos very much particularly for the clear way of speaking that makes everything understandable for a non-english speaking viewer.

Is that a short that I can see between pins 2 and 3 on the back of the connector in the early seconds of the video? It probably isn't, may be just a hair linking the two pins. Very sharp video here, with good macro and resolution, I wouldn't have been able to see this clearly with the earlier videos!

JC-13 is the bane of my existence, way too complex indeed. I have two of these decks, both JC-13 controller boards are duds. I've tried checking all the capacitors on the boards, there are many electrolytics and tantalums and all seem to check out. Trimmer pots too. This is the Sony board from hell... until one sees the IO board underneath with a hundred more SMD capacitors on it.

I'm sure back in the day that board with all the IC's would just get replaced if any suspecting issues came up.

Try a bicycle shop to find a tube of lithium grease.

Nice! I saw a DV VCR by another manufacturer (maybe JVC?) a year or so ago but it was 200$ and I was and still am more into analog video so I never even bothered to contact the seller.

Really enjoy the multipart vids because you have time to show more detail.

Would the quality be worse if you transferred tapes using S-video?

Great video and repair! The remote control is amazing! They even thoughtfully included a coily cord for your convenience!

That remote control is nice. The complexity of the mechanism reminds me of the sort of thing that Dual used in their automatic turntables. They masters of fine mechanics. The towergear is quite neat. Somehow I really like mechanical things in motion.

That is a great machine! I hope you can find another one with a working FireWire.
