Great Stuff Wendell. Lovely demo of the basics of these great reels. Our elders referred to these types of reels as "The Ball Race Reels." Before the advent of the Keith Palmers (KP's), were the legendary PD (Peter Davidson) Reels. Our elders (my late beloved Dad - Gaff included) and all the old, original, legendary "West fishermen" used these PD's that were "The Reels of the time." Many of your subscribers will relate to this. Apologies and with respect to all but our elders i.e. all the old legendary "Ball Race Fishermen" always stated that "Once the Coffee Grinders were introduced, that was the greatest cause / demise of the great fishing of the past (...and a few additional unsavoury words with that as well) as just anyone could now fish." P.S. I still have the legendary PD Ball Race Reels that were handed down to me by my late dad. Those Reels are in a league of their own. Great stuff Wendell. Keep the clips coming.
As much as I'm from the newer generation I can agree with you due to my experience with these reels. I used coffee grinder for many years (fished once in a while). Until I started going to west in 2011 to 2014, I fished with a kp reel and side cast. I tell you, I never looked back. I actually enjoyed fishing more with these than the coffee grinder. I could actually feel the way I'm playing the fish, toe them if I needed to, it was just too enjoyable. My father passed on in November 2021. Before then he had given me a fishing bag with quite a bit of 5oz sinkers and a 7inch kp reel with a maxima line on the slightly heavier side. I love it so much I can't wait to start using it this season on the surf. I loved reading your comment, it made me imagine how good the fishing was back then. InshaAllah I'm going to look around to see where I can get a good surf rod hopefully I can still find those old school rods
I always fish with kp as it can handle salt. Personally, can't cast far else I get bush. You get big fish on that... burn your fingers. 😂😂😂 some guys can throw it further then any other real. That's inspiring.
Thank you, I'm really enjoying your channel. Been using the old KP for close to 60yrs and have taken from Karenteen to big Sharks on it. It's ability to cast almost weighless rigs makes the smaller KP the finest Mullet reels out there.
My dear friend mentor on snake Park pier Kenny....would throw his 5inch and a quarter with sealice for edibles....as a kid really impressed on me....Generous ballie would always offer me some of his sealice👍❤️
Hi Jan, that depends on the angler. With my 10ft and 5 inch, I usely scratch nearby within the range of 60m. If you want to throw further then maybe a 13ft rod with a 6 and a half inch Kp would be better suited. Alot of people think that a KP can't throw far. I have seen guys casting great distances with it. But it takes skill. What I showed in this video is the basics...
Hi Wendell, just to add to your demonstration with the KP, the length of the drop from the rod tip is also something to consider but varies with the type of action the rod has. On a slow action road, I find the best length for the overhead cast is about 2/3 down the length of the rod. On faster action rods about half way down from the rod tip. Also, line type is important to eliminate overwinds. A stiffer line like Maxima dark green is preferable to softer limp lines but each to his own. Another factor is eye (line guide) positioning on the rod. The eye closest to the reel should ideally be located between halfway and 2/3 the rod length for less line resistance for further casting distances. The rod actually does all the work while you are just guiding it through the follow through. No sudden jerk snap action is required as this will lead to an overwind. The cast is smooth and controlled.
@@hiltonhoward7057 this is excellent info. I will cover more aspects of this going further. This first video was only an introduction. Maybe a part 2 and 3 can add to the depth....
ua-cam.com/video/CdYwPgl8TyI/v-deo.html 120m on this cast. I did pretty well on a 14' and 6" KP 40yrs ago. You can have the 6" KP customized at the factory to a 5.5" light. This is excellent for spinning due to the reduced weight.

You make it look so easy! Looking forward to further KP casting videos.

Wow, that's great. You feel more in touch with the fish using a KP.
Excellent demo Wendell, tks
awesome bro...this Kp reel reminds me of my night hawk reel that I used for fresh water fishing.
Hi Kishendren. I have looked up the night hawk reel and see what you mean. I am sure you have some good memories with it...
@@wendelmoodley for sure bru...that reel is so loud wen the on the run with a fish...u dnt even need a nite light for your rod lol

One thing to note all KP reels rod butts should be short.
Wendell. With a 10 ft rod 5 " kp what is the average distance a person can cast.

@@TheJuryIsOut that's great. Yes, I have seen that video before. Quite a good cast...
Tried plenty time's failed eventually gave both of them to my brother in-law who is a master in KP reels. Be safe and God bless 🙏
Thanks Clent. Sorry that your experience was such. This reel can really humble the best of fishermen. It took me a while to get back to using it...
