  • The explosive Kathak and Tap collaborative production, "India Jazz Suites", between Kathak master Pt. Chitresh Das & Tap star Jason Samuels Smith. Don't call this fusion, but rather two masters staying true to their art forms and finding a common ground to communicate.
Kathak is a classical dance form from North India that is characterized by fast footwork, pirouettes, and expression for storytelling. It also traditionally includes a high level of improvisation or upaj.

I'd love to see a fusion dance between Kathak & flamenco. They have much in common. Would love to see a dance with the lovely hand & arm movements of both.

I love collaborations but I have to say that Kathak dancers are extra skilled because they have to learn music theory as well. You see, in olden times, a Kathak dancer had to come on stage and totally improvise. Not having heard the tune before or not knowing what the drum player was going to play...they had to rely solely on their knowledge of rhythm and its time cycles. I don't know much about tap dance but I'm sure they have to learn similar? Also, in Kathak, arms, stance, the whole body and expressions...everything is part of the dance.

Other than the light jazz in the background is there anything else in this performance that has anything to do with jazz? This old man has certainly forgotten that the jazz is there and is going on with his kathak...there's no connection to the jazz. Fair enough it's only a small element, but why name the piece "India Jazz Suites" and then completely ignore the jazz elements?

Yes, I agree, especially it seems that the classical North Indian music does not, or cannot, "swing," which is not totally necessary for Jazz, but is still quite central.
