  • Hi everyone! In this video, I take you on a silent walking tour through the town centre of St Helier / Saint Helier, the capital and only town of Jersey.
This was taken on a Sunday morning when many of the shops were shut and a general lack of road and people traffic. When it is so quiet, one can really enjoy the architecture and see things one would not normally see when there are loads of people around. It is also great for the mental health to do such a walk. So, come and enjoy this silent walk with me!
Date of filming: 29 January 2023

Love the tiny lanes. My 2x G grandmother is from st Helier from 1870s. She come to New Zealand in 1890s. I’d love to visit.

you missed the Victory "V" in the paving slabs outside the States Building, in the Royal Square. it was built there by local builders in WWII right under the noses of the Germans who occupied the building.
most tourist stop and read what is on the plinth that the Jersey Crapaud is sat on. seeing as how we locals are know as Crapaud's or Beans (after the local dish, the Jersey Bean Crock).
if you look next to the door at 19:26 you will see a Swastika carved into the front of the house. as a local had painted one there in WWII in tar, as an informant lived in that property. they couldn't remove the tar, so had to chisel it off.

These are some of my favourite kinds of days. Out and about somewhere new, very few people out, no set schedule, just go out and explore. Granted, meeting the locals is always fun too, but scenarios like this are just as important if you want to soak in everything a place has to offer. :)

Absolutely mate! I do like a silent walking tour - as you say, it just gives a totally different experience. I will definitely continue doing them going forward

Willie, I used to drive those same places in my Mini-Van. Thanks for the memories of those summer seasons 1961-62-63. Always will have a nostalgia about Portlet Beach my favorite. What is yours?

Cheers for watching and sharing your memories Ron! I wish I had more time in Jersey but one can always go back, right? I really don't have a standout favourite, but I did really enjoy Gorey and St. Aubin's Bay. The walk to Elizabeth Castle on the beach was special too. I bet Jersey has changed a lot since the 1960s though.

Used to love walking on a Sunday thru Rotorua NZ streets in the center of town. During busy times one misses the beauty . Enjoyed picking up on places I can relate to. Boots the chemist for one. Kiwi from Virginia.

It used to be a great place years ago when there was a tourist industry but they made a balls of it nows its all banking , me and my partner went back a couple of years back to mark 25 yrs since we left and in all honesty there's more life in a tramps vest.

@willieexplore hi willie, your quiet right maybe a bit strong! Don't get me wrong the rest of the island is still beautiful and we did enjoy it . We were there 7 years and had a ball , the point I was making was the contrast in St.helier between then and now , empty pubs no buzz at all once you leave St.helier it's grand.

Is that an anglicised South African accent? St. Helier looks really very bland.
