Professor Tom, your teaching has helped me so much during my Jiu Jitsu journey. I am now lucky enough to be able to teach at the club I train at as part of my path to brown belt. The way you explain and demonstrate things has been and continues to be a source of inspiration. I hope I get to train with you one day. Thank you.

Now I'm 32 I'm no longer overweight, I've grown in confidence, I'm still 6'6", granted I only leave my house to go to bjj but better than being a recluse who only socialised when playing duos on warzone. 🤙🏾
"Still 6'6" " 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Congrats king. At 6'3" I feel like a giant until I meet someone 6'6"+. Y'all are U N I T S. I can't imagine flying though.... It's miserable for me
I respectfully disagree that you should do Jiu-Jitsu to build confidence. I personally and specifically trained Jiu-Jitsu to build confidence because I followed advice like this because I thought if I just showed up and was consistent I would develop authentic confidence and belief in myself when it comes to being able to defend myself. The main motivation to train was that I didn't have the confidence to stand up for myself and assert myself and got bullied. The reality was that for 2 years I trained as hard as I could and mostly just got my ass kicked and my main strength was getting injured and I got nicknamed Mr. Glass by a couple of the fighters at the gym. I might also end up having to get neck surgery because of herniated discs in my neck from Jiu-Jitsu. I stumbled my way to a blue belt but felt even less confident than when I entered the gym because instead of being humbled by the reality of not being able to defend myself and then overcoming that and being able to defend myself. I just got stuck in the phase of I don't know how to confidently defend myself because of my spine injuries. I learned the lesson that some people like myself are just injury-prone and have bad spine genetics, and if you have bad spine genetics the LAST thing you should do is grappling. The reason is is that although jiu-jitsu is a very effective martial art, it won't be for you because you won't be able to train enough to become effective at it. Moreover, some people are naturally very untalented at grappling and injury-prone and if you put a lot of effort into something and months and years go by and you still suck at it and are getting tapped out by everybody it's going to make you bitter, resentful, and less confident. I don't think you can understand that perspective because when you did jiu-jitsu you saw progress and didn't get injured and ridiculed. The better advice and more honest advice would be "hey try jiu-jitsu and if you see progress and feel more confident then stick with it." "If not you should quit sooner rather than later and find a different martial art that is effective for self-defense and that you see progress in that makes you more confident." If you have the money you should take private one on one lessons with a black belt that way you won't into injury-riddled deathmatches with white belts who have a fragile ego. I personally found boxing to be the most effective and least damaging on my spine compared to the other more effective martial arts like Muay Thai, Wrestling, Judo, and Kickboxing. Just wanted to share that because I don't think a lot of people share that perspective and I want to make others feel less alone if they experienced something similar.
If you made it to blue belt, then your coach sees your progress and you should have the skills to defend yourself. Did you ever do any mobility work outside of class? What does your coach say about these doubts that you are not progressing?
i had to pause mid video to say this. Tom you have become more than just a bjj coach like you are seriously making an impact and changing ppls lives w your videos and your words..like Tom has become a literal sort of mentor or life coach in a sense xD hey man much love from TEXAS baby! u know we got your back down here!

Just had my first training and at first i was a bit sceptical and even a bit scared im a big dude but still, and i can gladly tell it was amazing and litterly evryone was kind.
I’m thinking about trying it again, I can honestly say I don’t think I’m humble enough for BJJ. I trained boxing for a while before the gym shut down and I was fairly natural at it and pretty good from the start so I enjoyed it. I have zero natural grappling ability whatsoever and don’t like doing things I’m bad at. I hate getting beat up and I’m a slow learner. I would leave there angry and feeling like shit about myself. But I was also 190 pounds when I first tried it and I’m down to 163 so maybe I’ll enjoy it more if I’m in better shape.
I just went to my first BJJ class this past week. I'm skinny, wear glasses, not at all athletic, but I want to become stronger inside and out. I'm scared and excited to change my life with jiu jitsu. Life's pretty busy, with nursing school and work, but I hope I can stick with it, because I'm ready to grow. Hit me up in a year and see how I'm doing!
Yeap and also jiu-jitsu techniques can be very useful in real life. There's a progression to Jiu-Jitsu parenting. With wife we were struggle to have kids for several years. To distract myself I trained jiu-jitsu like insane. Luckily, we found Biotexcom reproductive medicine center, so now we are happy parents of two amazing kid. So, when I was a white belt, I used hip control and pressure to change diapers. Then I realized I could get the same level of poop control without using my hands if I had shoulder control. So I'd wrap his onesie around his shoulders and staple them to the floor with my feet. But then I got another stripe, and I learned the value of spinal control. The body can't go anywhere without the head! Now I just nestle his head between my feet, and he can't get his head to the side to up out of his diaper change. Invisible poop-jitsu! Now also I use an arm-in body triangle to go for brushing hair. And elbow control works great for keeping kids from hitting you during a tantrum!
I am not sure my coach will be staying or leaving. We were supposed to train for MMA but when i was introduced to the mat the first, I loved it and even offered nyself for dummy. I was looking for a way to train and educate myself - BJJ.
You know what sir... you sold me on this... I'm going to the gym on Thursday to try muay thai and jiu jitsu but I think based on my research.... I will end up choosing bjj. I was sexually taken advantage of at 11 years old, and after that life just been spiraling down hilll... I've been depressed, angry, settled for mediocre or less, and just don't care about anything... not my health... future... anything. I gained weight too. I feel like I've been destroyed. But I'm 17 years old this year... I need to get my life together because I'm going to be an adult in a year and be out of high school..... I don't want my emotional trauma to dominate me anymore... and I don't want to do nothing with my life and end up on drugs later on. I want to become a better version of myself... and the benefits you said jiu jitsu give are just what I need.
Good on you Maggie. Thanks for sharing. You are strong and making a great decision. Power to you. Don’t let the wake drive the boat. You are in control. Kick some ass! Proud of you Maggie. 🥋🙏Tom Davey
I'm a 54 year old man looking for advice. I first started training BJJ in 1994 with John and Jean Jaques and did so on and off until 2002. I just started back (I no longer live in LA) a few weeks ago after 20 years. I'm not in good shape and even though I'm only training techniques right now to try and avoid injury I still got injured. I'm not entirely sure how much slower I can go, but I want to train for as long as I can. I'm not concerned about the color of my belt as much as I am about longevity. But if I'm pulling muscles and have very sore ribs just from doing techniques then I won't have any longevity. What can I do to prevent this from happening? Any sound advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

I just wanted to say I'm really enjoying your content. I also have a youtube channel. I talk about how BJJ has and continues to my mental health. Amongst other things I like to interview other BJJ practitioners to ask them about why they train? How it helps their life? Why they think people should train etc? I'm guessing you're in Australia and was wondering if you ever might be prepared to do a zoom recording where you talk about your BJJ? Let me know what you think and thanks for the great content. I'm 21 years old and was struggling horribly with addiction of various substances, Jiu-jitsu taught me that I'm actually WORTH something for once. I've now been clean for about 5-ish months.
This man is a God Damn Saint. Protect him at all costs. Beautiful and accurate video
Great summary of BBJ benefits to the mind and spirit as well as to the body - both inspiring and encouraging!
I’m 30 and I was in a very dark place, Bjj pulled me out of it after just a few sessions my entire perspective changed. You learn a lot about yourself. Also your ego will receive a massive check. When you can’t get a one year white belt that weighs 50lbs less than you off of you no matter how hard you try you’ll be humbled lol
I recently went to a judo class. I totally agree with this guy. It's a great reality check.
Coach Tom seems like a really nice dude!!
Haha, I try to be nice! Might as well since I spend my days choking people. HAHA Happy rolling (-: Coach Tom Davey
Agreed. Love his videos. This video is inspiring.
Starting at 10th Planet in Denver specifically for these reasons. Thank you for confirming this. Looking forward to learning!
Never ever have I felt more free than the very moment I start rolling. As if nothing exists and there is only me, my thought and my body, incredible feeling
I’m starting jiu jitsu soon. I’ve done other martial arts before, I’ve done karate, boxing, and kickboxing. Now on to jiu jitsu
Nice! I work out at a gym that does boxing and BJJ. Ive been sparring and training in boxing but i wanna do the BJJ too.
Very touching. What a great human being, thank you coach Tom
Coach Tom, you are awesome. What a blessing for those guys that get to train with you.
Going to my first class on Tuesday after the weekend is over. Hoping it goes well. I've been wanting to get in there and try it. Nervous but I'm forcing myself to overcome my nerves to learn and hopefully make a big change in my life with it.
awesome Zach. cONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR COURAGE. yOU WILL HAVE FUN! (-: Coach Tom Davey
Hell, yes. My first is Tuesday as well - tomorrow.
Thoughts? :)
Great video coach Tom . You / SCBJJ has changed my life and I'll always be forever grateful
Thanks for the kind words Peter. You, too, have helped so many at South Coast BJJ through your help and example. Forever grateful. (-: Coach Tom Davey
Great video and very motivating. I'm going to book my first class 👍
May the force be with you Brother! OSS!
Just got done with my first month was 400lbs. Now under 370. Do BJJ for the love of god. Just joined another gym for weightlifting. BJJ improves you as a person 100%
Thank you.
Amazing video
I started bjj in 2019 an overweight, unconfident, 6"6', 30 year old reclusive after the loss of two of friends one though drug use one though suicide, I was super depressed.
It's miserable for me
Thanks Tom
Just wanted to share that because I don't think a lot of people share that perspective and I want to make others feel less alone if they experienced something similar.
idk how i read all this... but interesting!
Thanks 🙏 very kind of you. Man I miss Texas!
Thanks, this is probably the most awesome bjj video I have ever watched (personally). Great philosophy, shows your heart linking with your mind, good stuff, thanks again.
So glad you enjoyed the video Mario. Have fun and take care on those mats (-: Coach Tom Davey
Dude this guy talking about BJJ changing your life gave me Severus Snape vibes during his “I can teach you to bewitch the mind and ensnare the senses” speech 😂 super excited to learn BJJ thanks man
been following the sport for ages and tried it out for my first time lastnight. unfortnatly i dislocated my shouder just doing simple grappling as i had a shoulder surgery last year in august and i thought i could bounce back :( never been so bloody devastated but i highly recommend the sport to anyone ! great video
I just started the other day I’m excited asf!
Very profound. Thank you.
Know the vid is a few years old but just came in my feed..... definitely inspired, have seen so many bids of what jiu jitsu can do for you and I still haven't gone to a class and to be honest probably won't after watching this....and I've come to realise the reasons why I won't go is exactly why I need jiu jitsu
such a good video, thank you Coach Tom
Well said. There are so many benefits, it is almost impossible to put them into words.
Love this! soo true
It’s a life style
Thank you for your channel! I started my BJJ journey a week ago, and love it! Your videos motivated me to make the change and become a better version of myself!
Just had my first training and at first i was a bit sceptical and even a bit scared im a big dude but still, and i can gladly tell it was amazing and litterly evryone was kind.
Thank you! Signing Up This Week 💪🏽
Thank you. Very well said. You have a gift of communicating jiu jitsu.
Awesome video coach I use north south Chile's techniques all the times thanks bruddah!!!
you just convinced me to try it out
I’m thinking about trying it again, I can honestly say I don’t think I’m humble enough for BJJ.
You're doing a great job, man! Keep it up!
Thanks Aurelio! I will! Happy training (-: Coach Tom Davey
Great message brother, keep up the awesome work and good luck to you and your students in the future!!! Oss
Well its only been 5 months, but how's it going?
Great video!
Great video! Also accurate af
Preach Brother!! Love it.
This was a superb video thank you James
Haha hilarious David. (-: Coach Tom Davey
I am not sure my coach will be staying or leaving. We were supposed to train for MMA but when i was introduced to the mat the first, I loved it and even offered nyself for dummy. I was looking for a way to train and educate myself - BJJ.
Been doing BJJ lately and it is life changing
Your videos are great. Thank you.
My pleasure! Happy training (-: Coach Tom Davey
Thanks from Australia
🥋🙏Tom Davey
This video is beautiful and so true
For me, Coach Tom and big Chewy from Chewjitsu encapsulate BJJ.
The world would be a better place if more people trained Jiu-Jitsu 🤙🏼
Awesome. Chewy's a cool guy. We should do another video interview and chat together...and this time upload it. (-: Tom Davey
Are there a support group for athletes in recovery or facing addiction?
Asking desperately for myself thanks
Quick google can hopefully find you the support you need!
There’s always going to be an adjustment period just keeping going slow, warm up thoroughly and keep training to twice a week,
@@TheGrapplingAcademy thank you!
Been to four classes in two weeks, was raised playing sport union ironworker now, have a good job and great wife but smoke and drink like a fien looking to make a change with Bjj
Amazing. Thank you Bro. Osss.
Good talk, Tom. You are a wise man. I couldn't agree more and I'm very thankful for having BJJ in my life. It's helped me deal with some things in a positive way that I would not have otherwise to say the least. If only I had seen the light earlier on in my life!
I agree 100% with you Jesse. Thanks for the kind words! (-: Coach Tom Davey
You really made my day.Wonderful wisdom man thank u.I want to become a mma fighter and teacher
Oss - James
FACTS…gotta stick with it though
