i prefer builds like this, considering the number of teeth not the number of gears. as a 11 and 12 speed user, i encounter alot of problems including faster wearing of parts than 8 speed.
I plan to build my race mtb the same way too, just a simple 1x8 drivetrain for durability and so it can still fit the larger chains for the 7 and 8 speed bikes
I think tuning this setup is pretty difficult. My RD is capable to handle UpTo 50T. I alway end up having shifting issue in the middle but when i twist the barrel adjuster the chain wont go to smallest and largest gear
Trek Marlin 4 has the Rear hub Formula DC31, it will be good if there is a 8 speed 11-42T freewheel available for 1X8 conversion, I cannot find any 8 speed 11-42T freewheel to suit the Rear hub Formula DC31

@@johnjoestar5111 it depends on you cage size. SS Short cage Claris can only take up to 34 teeth cassette. Dont know if goatlink can be used on road RDs.
I plan to buy it....But I don't if I will need to replace the chain.........Current setup is 3x8.....Cassette is Shimano 32 teeth I think........And SRAM X4 I think is medium cage......

What grip shifters are you using with that XT derailleur? That's awesome you were able to get that XT to work; per the specs, that 46 cog is way out of its range. Nice going!

I have a question... I have an 8 speed 11-40t cassette and a shimano altus m310 RD with extension. I can reach the largest cog no problem. However, the shifting is not smooth and is a bit clunky. When i do the indexing, it either shifts well at the large cogs and badly at the smaller cogs or vise versa. I can't get it to shift well for every cog. Its really frustrating. Do you think that if i change the RD it will fix this problem!? Thank you in advance sir.

Hi, the cassette is great and the shifting is acceptable, I haven’t had any problem with it, just make sure to get a nice long cage derailleur with it.

@@DanyoSports yes I made sure it was as tight as possible. I had another look before and noticed the actual 'cassette' (the piece on the spindle that the cogs slide on to) was moving. Is there a way to tighten that? Or will that affect the spindle e.g. stiffen up? I think my chinese set is maybe 0.5mm bigger than the old Shimano set I took off, so that must account for some of the movement.

Should this be corrected, and if so how do I tighten it? Do I need to strip down the spindle... or replace it. The slight difference in the chinese 'cassette' of about 0.5mm (im guessing) I was just going to neatly wrap some black electrical tape around the hub, being mindful of the guides/grooves, to get a better snug fit. Ok, to replace the freehub body, you’ll need to remove the locknuts from each side of the wheel, take out the bearings and axle and then use a 10-12mm hex wrench to unscrew the freehub body. I hope this helps.

Just to update on my situation, shifting is fine now and the chain stays on the 46t cog. I used a brand new chain and didn't shorten it (chain is still at 116 links). I'm running a compact crankset up front

I would change it if the chain is worn out, don’t let it ruin your new cassette. By the way, you might have to extend your chain, so you might as well get a new one.
Yes, it depends on your setup and you‘ll probably need to extend it. I haven’t reused the old chain, I replaced it with a new one. It’s better to change the chain when you put in a new cassette and crankset.
Very poor quality and not hardened steel like Shimano. Save your money and don't buy this crab. I have used this cassette in combination with my Bafang BBSHD middle drive motor and in no time the teeth were gone plus one wrong shift and the gear just was bending 30 degrees. My advice DON'T BUY THIS CRAB!!!.Don't buy anything from Ztto because it's all crab!!.Sunrace,and Sunshine the same.

My lbs couldn't get my 8 speed 11 x 40 to fit onto a 8 speed free hub body . So I had to go with 11 x 32

I’m using the SRAM MRX Comp grip sfifters designed for Shimano derailleurs.

Yes, check your derailleur actuation ratio, it might not match with your shifter.

Hi, the width should be identical to the 10 speed so you don’t need spacers for that.

Shimano Acera won’t fit, many people are having issues with it, you need to get another derailleur like Shimano Deore XT.

Hi, I’m using Shimano Deore XT and it works perfectly, I’m not sure about Microshift but I think it would fit as long as it is a long cage derailleur.

How long is your chain? I have a similar setup (long cage rd + extender) but my chain won't stay on the 46t cog when I'm going uphill
The chain has 108 links so the length is 136cm.

If it’s hitting the largest cog, adjust it with the B-Tension screw.

Yes, it depends on your setup and you‘ll probably need to extend it.
I haven’t reused the old chain, I replaced it with a new one. It’s better to change the chain when you put in a new cassette and crankset.

Yes, the hub would work and you need a long cage derailleur. Fine tuning is also necessary.

Very poor quality and not hardened steel like Shimano. Save your money and don't buy this crab. I have used this cassette in combination with my Bafang BBSHD middle drive motor and in no time the teeth were gone plus one wrong shift and the gear just was bending 30 degrees. My advice DON'T BUY THIS CRAB!!!.Don't buy anything from Ztto because it's all crab!!.Sunrace,and Sunshine the same.
