It amazes me that the community forgets that they voted for stuff to be in a game, and then complain later, saying why is this in a game? lol short term memory I guess
Really? I’ve heard that we autistics tend to not taste very good by any metric. All the chicken nuggets we ate as children make us taste all tough and gamey, apparently.
As a Shakespeare nerd, I love Portia's story and voicelines. Killing Tariq and feeding his flesh to Madok is exactly what happened in Titus Andronicus, which is probably a precursor to revenge horror (it has EVERYTHING Pixel mentioned, the good, bad, and ugly lol). And there's quite a few voicelines that mostly ("Thy stupidity isn't an accident, but a trade") or fully ("Out of my sight, thou dost infect my eyes") quote Shakespeare. She ain't taking the easy way out to insult survivors like Chucky, she's throwing the book at em.
Oh, Revenge Horror has been a THING in popular media for as long as people have been telling stories around the campfire. In Shakespeare's era, they were called Jacobian Revenge Tragedies (which Titus Andronicus very much is). And Portia is a GLORIOUS example of it.
Imagine she throws at someone an insult from Shakespeare books and the survivor goes like: 'Is that Shakespeare?!' And Portia goes: 'Finaly! A man of culture!' And they just chat over Shakespeare
As someone who has wanted a hound master type killer for LITERALLY YEARS I am overjoyed with how this killer looks. The lore, design, and gameplay are everything I could have wanted. Just as a funny detail as well, a family friend of mine owns a Cane Corso and good god. He’s the biggest dog I’ve ever seen in my life and makes me think that Snug could have easily been a killer of his own. 💀
Big agree on this one. Despite all the clunk in both the writing of her story (like the actual wording, not the plot itself) and her power, I've really come to appreciate her. Her power is fun and has a high skill floor, and there's some cool tech to be done with it as well. Add on to that that she's actually fun to play against as well, she's got great cisuals, great sound design, and really solid music, and she's easily one of the best releases we've had in a long time.
I know it's unlikely that this was intentional, but Portia reminds me a lot of Furiosa in the Furiosa prequel, with how every action she takes is with the intent to 1) get home and/or 2) get revenge. It's a funny but apt comparison between two badass, morally ambiguous women.
She's such a breath of fresh air after getting over a year of nothing but crossovers, and the fact that she's the first female killer since SKULL MERCHANT is still insane to me
What I like bout both The houndmaster's and Taurie's lore is that the person they were gonna kill were both taken from the entity as they were about to do it. Maybe it is a tease to Molak and Haddie's brother being a later chapter?
would be great to have Molak in to fill the more traditional, or thought of, role of a "pirate" for those who were disappointed by houndmasters design and thought shes not really fit for a pirate, win win for everyone.
Dunno if I am forgetting something from past stories, but this one shows that The Entity is not only interested in humans but animals too, the bond between Portia and Snug is a perfect serving for The Entity to feed upon. And I think it is really cool, it shows that even tho she is a "Houndmaster", her Snug is not a tool, but a close friend, and she is for him, The Entity values all emotions, not only the human ones.
I love the idea that the entity preyed on her love of her best friend and took snugs look for it’s own as a way to manipulate her into the fog, and I cannot wait to see if BHVR will release a German Shepherd skin for the dog please please BHVR
@@FinestFantasyVI BHVR seems to be really confused on their stance for that, like for example deathslingers gun. it seems they also dont care when it comes to the houndmaster, her dog is confirmed to have a poodle skin already.
I love how Pixel Bush gushes over Houndmaster. When I saw her design and read her lore, the first thing I thought of was "Pixel Bush is going to absolutely love her"
Honestly, despite it not being a likely thing to happen, I would love for Molak to be a second Pirate killer in a later chapter because he was also taken in Portia's story. The idea of the Entity turning both pirates into killers, and having them constantly hunting for each other in the trials, leaving small traces of the other to feed their mutual hatred is a cool concept in my opinion. ...And it would give a good excuse to add a tricorne bearing, cutlass wielding pirate into the game LOL. Though I will say Portia's design is great and very pirate-y in my book, because if you just substitute the hair for a tricorne, nobody would say she's anything but a pirate. She's got the coat, boots, and -most importantly- the speech of a stereotypical pirate anyway.
I wonder if Molak will be a survivor in a future Chapter, I can't help but think the fear and despair he felt in that moment convinced the entity to put him in the trials.
The question of whether Snug _(and Victor)_ are just Entity constructs is an interesting one. IMO Pixel's point about Snug fighting and killing alongside Portia in the Dragon's Tooth isn't conclusive, it's an Overlap with a link to the Entity's Realm, so I don't think it's any different than Snug fighting and killing in the Trials. It's probably going to be like White Eyes theory though, never explicitly confirmed/denied but with enough evidence to debate it either way. Also, I'm hoping in Tome lore someday we will see the orange eyes thing explored, because it's clear that the Houndmaster power ability of being able to see through Snug's POV for a moment and command him is actually a diagetic ability Portia has gained. I have always wanted the goings on in the Fog to be elaborated on more, it'd be cool if we knew the circumstances in which Portia/Snug changed like this.
I love the parallels with Taurie and Houndmaster, and I wouldn't be surprised if you bring that up yourself. Both of which spent a lot of time in the entity's realm before being taken by the fog, but also this theme of their final goal in life being taken from them right before they can finish it. Portia vied for vengeance against Molak, and just before she could take it, the entity took it from her. Taurie wanted to be a devote disciple of the entity, serving the entity in her realm, and before Taurie could prove herself to her cult for the last and most important time, she gets taken.
Houdmaster is the most I've liked a killers lore and playstyle since the knight, and at the time he stopped my burnout and got me more into the game. She's a great addition.
This is a great video, and I'm glad you like the Houndmaster. Although, I wonder if you'll ever make a video about the Realms of Dead by Daylight someday, or maybe do an updated version of a video where you told your thoughts on all Killers (I forgot which one.)
It's honestly a little surprising it took this long to get a pet killer. In terms of archetypes, pet users are very common in pop culture. A killer like The Twins or Artist do not fulfil this archetype. A pet user, at least in games, is defined by being able to act in tandem with another entity you have some control over. Artist halfway gets there, but the Crows essentially only have one command you can give them. Although not a requirement, people who want to play a pet character want the ability to give a variety of commands.
I've been begging for a pirate killer hopefully I can play her good maybe she'll be my second behind my main man deathslinger. Her lore already got my interest peak now it comes all down to gameplay
Honestly, it could still be a win win if licenses are more focused on, hear me out. On one side, the licensed fans are hyping up all their favorite collabs and does benefit the game's growth. Meanwhile the original chapters get to spend more time in the oven and come out really good for the original chapter fans, especially since those fans and the devs both want to avoid another Skull Merchant incident. So while yes, there are so many licenses coming out, the more time that's being spent on the original chapters, the better they will be, and the original chapter fans deserve good releases. I think that's one of the reasons The Unknown did so unbelievably well, and that's why I think The Houndmaster has also did so well. Because their original chapters got to spend a lot more time in the oven before being released to the public. At least for licensed chapters, they already have source material to work with, but to make something original, you can't rush perfection. I hope I made sense with what I'm saying here and didn't upset anyone.
Nah, I get where you're coming from. Skully and Knight needed a bit more time in the oven to get their powers to work. Though I'd add the caveat that they use the licensed material to its FULLEST capacity to make the killer stand out. I don't have a problem with licensed killers, in fact, Vecna is probably one of my favorite killers! But I do have a problem with lazy implementation under the veil of fanservice. There is no way what they did with Xeno and Dracula is the best they could've done with the source material; I can barely distinguish them from the other midrange zoners. If you're gonna keep implementing the midrange zoning formula, at least give the projectile SUBSTANTIALLY different properties like they did with Portia.
Honestly, I love this killer. She’s a pretty high B-tier killer as of now imo, and Snug is pretty fun to do stuff with (except when he runs into obstacles and stops moving). Plus, I think her lore is awesome and the fact that her cosmetics can change the dogs is exciting. Overall, I really think she’ll be a great addition to the game and, assuming she gets a couple little buffs (namely to search), she’ll be fun. I’m def gonna play her a good bit
This is off of the subject of DBD but Portia’s story reminds me so much of Clairen’s story from Rival of Aether. Though Clairen is a sympathetic protagonist written with the core theme of bloody revenge at all costs. It’s kinda interesting how the stories are nearly exactly the same yet Portia is written as a villain obsessed with revenge. I wonder why that’s the case if both characters are written near identical to each other? I’m thinking perhaps Molluk is just doing what his duty is at the time of killing Portia’s family. But Loxodont, the villain of Clairen’s story, in Rivals of Aether is already written as a cruel and evil man who seized power at the first given opportunity. I think those two things paint stories of revenge in different lights. I’m not too sure but still, Portia and Clairen are near identical to each other but their perception to players are completely opposite. Really interesting.
@PixelBush Slight plothole this video reminded me of, specifically to do with Nea's lore. It's stated that she lives in Sweden, but was taken from the remains of Crotus Prenn after she was dared to graffitti tag it. But.. As far as I can tell Crotus Prenn is in the US. I would like to add promising young woman to the "revenge" movies worth watching. A lot more pastel and pretty about it, but the horror iis more in the implication, I think. I'm pretty sure the director went on to make saltburn, so make of that what you will, I've not watched it, but PSW was genuinely great imo
I would also add that her whole "serving of his son roasted" puts me in mind of Procne and Philomela, but that might just be because it's another "cook the child and feed them to the parent" story, though it is also very markedly about the revenge of an exploited woman. Also Jason and Medea. Damn a lot of people feed children to their parents in folklore
Its sad to think, Knowing from the lore, That Like Victor, Snug is a Figment of The entity Brought to help Portia, because Snug Most likely died outside of the fog
The lore is absolutely ludicrous. She's apparently capable of killing hoards of people singlehandedly like some sort of Carribbean Rambo. Bhvr writers are absurd. She's not shown to be a competent leader, considering her crew mutiny Snug is presumably the only reason she survives as a castaway, as a means of the entity grooming her to become a killer (it can be safely assumed that snug was a construct of the entity following the shipwreck due to the survival of a puppy in a shipwreck and then a dangerous island being very unlikely). What's more, her plan to get revenge isn't shown to be smart as it hinges on Molak being dumb. She attacks the island whilst it's undefended and then the Molak stupidly lets this stranger attack him. It's not as if she's actually attempting any real ruse because she just hopes he doesn't recognise her and (presumably) hopes he'll meet with him (presumably undefended). Also, 8:38 why the fuck she so big?
Hard disagree, shes practically got nearly all the elements of a typical pirate, and I don't really want a cookie cutter stereotype killer without and behavior twists

houndmaster? i hardly know 'er!
I wonder if Jason Voorhees, the legend of the slashers, will ever come as a Licensed Killer to Dead by Daylight.
Oprah been acting differently since she got a dog.
we had 7 licensed chapters because skull merchant and knight were dogshit
They really made a Pit Mommy killer and dinner was an infant ago so your ass is grass 🤣
Meh...
We need a Mafia killer, that would've been better!
666th like 💀⚒️
Garbage Killer.
I do like houndmaster but i don't like her design, she iether needed to be more stereotypical pirate or don't make her one thats all i have to say
SHE ISNT A PIRATE THOUGH?
Hard disagree, shes practically got nearly all the elements of a typical pirate, and I don't really want a cookie cutter stereotype killer without and behavior twists
I’d love to know what time period she was from…
