I hope that you remember 1980’s of your time in Canterbury.
I shot this 8mm Film at 10AM to 1PM on Sunday 8th of June 1986.
(At 2:52 the clock tells AM10:20.) [Super 8mm Camera was Chinon Pacific 200/8 XL.]

There was “SAFWAY”, but now (2019) “Waitrose”.
I was shooting this film by hand during walking, so this video may make you dizzy. If that case, please play slowly by UA-cam video setting.

Start form Suffolk Road, Sussex Avenue, Spring Ln, St.Augustines Road, New Dover Rd, NISSAN, SAFEWAY, ABC Cinema (ODEON), McDonalds, WHSMITH, High ST, Mercery Ln, Canterbury Cathedral, The King’s School Shop, Palace ST, Pizza Hat, WIMPY, Royal Museum and Free Library, Post Office, Guildhall, Great Stour, Greyfriars Gardens, Toddler's Cove Playground, Rheims Way, Starion Rd E, Canterbury East Station, City Wall, Pin Hill, Rhodaus Town, Dover St, CROSS KEYS, Old Dover Rd, Abbots Barton Walk, Ebury Hotel, The Canterbury Hotel, Stafford House.
From 1982 to 1987, every Saturday, my mother would drive to Canterbury for shopping, we lived near Dover and, in the 80s, Canterbury was the place to go. Parking was difficult back then but we would usually find a place behind the cinema or Orange Street. Forget Ashford or Ramsgate. Amazing what the town centre has become. Debenhams gone? Wow. After lunch at McDonald's we would go to the cinema, every now and then. No cinema in Dover and only a small theatre in Deal. "Indiana Jones & The Temple of Doom", "Ghostbusters", "Police Academy 2", "Back to the Future", "The Goonies", "Rocky 4", " Crocodile Dundee 1 & 2", "Good Morning Vietnam" many classics seen there. In Mercery Lane, Albion Bookshop for school textbooks. Anyone remember an old man with his dog repairing glasses corner of Lloyds Bank? Quite sure there was an Our Price Records store when the Marlowe Arcade opened in 1985. I purchased a Go West vinyl there. And a BHS store with a cafeteria upstairs. Many memories....
I remembered the BHS which is now Primark. It has a cafe on the top floor where staff wore PVC aprons with the shop's logo on it during the 1980s and 1990s.

Thank you for posting this! Although I was only 9, I remember this summer very well. It's great to see the businesses that have come and gone and I remember when the cinema was ABC (before Cannon).

Thanks for posting this. I remember the old McDonald's at the top of the high street and what was about to become C & A. That also before that road was partially cobbled then bricked(it's tarmac in this film). Yeah, remember the old Cannon cinema(then ABC - and now Odeon).

I have been in Canterbury many times, in the "80/90 when I was a child to visit my nanny and grandad ; I live in Italy but my mother is english and I love Canterbury so much!!

Love this great memories what a shame it's changed so much ! I recall it from early 70s maybe earlier still know it today..st.augustine's road now too many cars and awful sleeping policemen like a chicane!.....thanx for showing this it's brought back great memories. X gosh it even goes passed where I was living off old dover road..Randolph close how bizarre....
In some ways it's the same city the buildings are much the same but the companies have changed but the people are not the same. This was a kinder more considerate time when people cared and a more innocent society. What a big shame those days cannot come back.

@@nakane3 It was a department store on Rose Lane at the corner with St Georges Street. Today it is a Metro Bank. As a kid I loved their toy department. They used to have a huge model railway in the window.

Ah yes, I remember those days when England still had it's own identity and tourists used to like coming here.
Very interesting video, but what is the point of showing it at such a stupidly sped-up rate? It would have been so much more enjoyable in real time. Anybody interested enough to watch this would have appreciated it so much more at the proper speed.

The Pub The butcher shop before the rail overpass the roundabout & underpass the M O K off to the right and late Nights SPIDERS BURGER COACH, The Old Norman Castle up the road still on the left the Tiny Convenient Shop just up the road at the intersection “ The 3 TON’S” I believe going up the road the Canterbury Information Center, The OLD PILGRIMS, going towards the HIGH Street the little narrow Street parallel to the CATHEDRAL walking down further left on Sun to Palace Road The Old 🔔 👑 the Governor Charlie Passy, The Wall of KINGS School opposite the Tilted House quick right Then Left the CHIPPY SHOP (if you carried on further a bit to the Right the ( “JOLLY SAILOR” ) but I would make my move going left on a NARROW Lane Saint Radigunds I believe going into CHURCH Street but on the right!! The most INFAMOUS BEST PUB OF MY YOUNG DAYS!! Filled with FUN, LAUGHTER, GOOD CONVERSATION, GOOD STAFF, SEXY BEAUTIFUL WOMEN AND PINTS 🍻 AND PINTS 🍻!! The place of My first SNAKE BITE and I drank 7 of them from 1500 - 2345!!
