My birth town, although my parents left when I was only 3yrs old. Have yearning for those Blue Ridge Mountains. Getting off this Florida Peninsula SOON!

These aren’t the blue ridge up here, they’re foothills of the appalachians. It’s pretty up here, but don’t expect a good income right now lol

Thank you so much for driving through Wheeling Island. I lived there in the 70's. It is so beautiful in WV.

Hi I have been thinking about moving to wheeling wv from California and was hoping you could help me out with some questions? Do you have any suggestions or tips about moving there? Why did you move away? Are the people there friendly?

As recently as the early and middle 1970s, the steel mills were still going and Wheeling and the surrounding area were prosperous. After the mills and their companion industries closed this portion of the Ohio Valley went into a decline from which it never recovered. The population declined and generally the population which remained was poorer and in some situations more in need of social services.

Wheeling is a nice little city. a lot of stuff to do in the area if you are get and go do stuff sort of person. Pittsburgh is only an hour away so if you like the big city but wouldn't want to live there this is good. There are a lot of nice parks, bike trails, jogging trails, decent music and cultural scene. It isn't the big city that's for sure but every thing is close. Down town is dead most nights.

@@monmixer I was looking in to possibly moving here and opening a bakery but it seems alot of people in the comments dont have very good things to say about this town. It looks so beautiful and the building are so cool. I just lost my home and farm to the fires in California and I just want a nice green friendly town to move to. Do you live there? Are the people friendly?

@@moonpie4107 I don't live in Wheeling, I live just across the river in Ohio about 10 minutes away from downtown Wheeling. I have worked in Wheeling my entire life. There certainly are areas of Wheeling where another bakery would do great. Especially if you want to get into different things. There is no Wal Mart in the actual city but their are is a big Kroger store. Wheeling does not have a personal income tax but it does have a service fee tax of 2 dollars per week if you work in the city limits. That isn't so bad. and it was recently started to buy a new municipal building. It could go away in the future. It does however have a B & O tax. which is 1% of your gross income or less depending on the type of business. The down town area currently is pretty dead. You would want to be in the Elm Grove area, Woodsdale area . the city does have a program where they buy up properties that are not being taken care of and give potential business owners properties far cheaper than dealing with a real estate agent or private party if you have a plan to develop it. Those properties are mostly in the down town area because they are trying to grow that area as a nice go anywhere on foot neighborhood. There is a beautiful park called Oglebay with a great golf course and another park called Wheeling park. In the summer when it's non covid there are constant free events in town. The police are pretty decent to deal with. There is another city right down the river called Moundsville that is similar that also has a nice park called Grandview park. Most cities in WV do have a B & O tax. The people are pretty friendly. There is a lot of fracking going on in this area right now so a lot of out of town workers are around. Right now a lot are laid off due to covid. Wheeling has a nice theatre and an arena. that is where I used to work and will return when we can re open. The entertainment scene is currently dead of course. So sorry to hear about the fires and your loss. I couldn't imagine. It's pretty safe here. Stay out of the flood plain. It's very had for tornadoes to kick up here because of the terrain. Rain and flash flooding unfortunately in the Elm Grove area are the biggest problem. It really is beautiful country around here. I'm 62 and have lived here my entire life. I don't want to go anywhere else. Here is a link for the B & O tax. www.wheelingwv.gov/departments/Finance/taxes-fees If I can help you with anything that you can't find out via internet. feel free to reach out. tractorhead@comcast.net

@@monmixer Thank you so much for such a detailed reply!! I really appreciate you taking time to give me so much information on wheeling! I have been looking at house to buy and storefronts to rent out. I was so shocked to see the prices there compared to California!!! The cost of living is absolutely amazing out there. I think I will try to take a trip out there when I can to check out the town for myself. The pictures make me so excited for a new adventure. It's just so green compared to where I live. It can be green here but California is definitely very dry and I would live to have lush green with a body of water close by plus there is a big town an hour away that. It just seems so perfect for me thank you again for your comment!

@@moonpie4107 Pittsburgh is 60 minutes away if you get the big city feeling. Columbus Ohio is 2 hours away. you can be in the woods in 15 minutes. You should look into the properties in wheeling that the city is willing to let you have cheap if you have a good plan. you are quite welcome.
